12.05.2022 Check out this Development Policy Centre blog by Evie Sharman and Stephen Howes. It is remarkable that such a niche topic as Pacific labour mobility should have taken centre stage in this year’s election. That it has bodes well for the future of Australia’s relationship with the Pacific. We’re very interested to see where the next government takes labour mobility after completing a major baseline study last year on the Pacific Labour Scheme now part of the Pacific Austr...alia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme. We provided a number of recommendations to help address stakeholder information needs and improve the future sustainability and expansion of the program. https://devpolicy.org/labour-mobility-campaign-wrap-202205/

23.04.2022 We’re digging into our archives and looking back at some of the high-impact projects we’ve completed. Here’s a project from 2017-2018 about community and business perceptions of crime and safety in Papua New Guinea. We worked with local researchers to conduct over 1,690 surveys and 16 focus group discussions. This gave us both quantitative and qualitative results to analyse and create a baseline understanding of justice sector issues. It was a big project, but very fulfilling to provide an evidence base for improving the justice sector in PNG. Read more about the project on our website

16.03.2022 Yesterday, the Sustineo team donned their purple shirts and embraced a warm Canberra Autumn morning to get their hearts pumping and legs moving in support of Femili PNG at the Canberra Times Marathon Festival. The event provided an incredible atmosphere for the runners. Congratulations to Tom and Friend of Sustineo Joe Reinhard on conquering their third half marathons, and to Ellis and Nina for smashing out the 5.4km run! It was an exhilarating day for everyone, and we’re p...roud to support Femili PNG in their mission to end family and sexual violence. Femili PNG has raised over $34,000 in their campaign so far! This incredible sum will make a huge difference, enabling Femili PNG to continue to support the hundreds of people affected by family and sexual violence every year and deliver education programs to even more. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this mammoth fundraiser your generosity is so greatly appreciated by many! It’s not too late to donate! 20.01.2022 You might remember a little while back that Sustineo's CEO, Tom Sloan, was training hard for the 'Run for Femili PNG' as part of the #CanberraTimesMarathonFestival. After some delays due to COVID-19 Tom is running this weekend in the now #virtual event! Yesterday, Tom sat down with Femili PNG to talk about the significance of Femili PNG's work on gender-based violence in PNG, including its relevance to our work at Sustineo, as well as the places and people we work with. He al...so gave an update on how his preparation is going. To get behind Tom and support this important cause, follow the donation link in the post below! #runningforacause #runTomrun

13.01.2022 It has now been just over 12 months since Tom Sloan started in the CEO role at Sustineo and it is safe to say that the last year has brought plenty of challenges and surprises! To mark this milestone, Tom has reflected on his experience in the role and the broader change that has happened over the last 12 months. This forms part one of a two-part series, where Tom reflects on how Sustineo has internally managed two distinctly different periods of our journey; pre and post t...he COVID-19 pandemic. Part one of this blog looks at the transition between CEOs, the continued emphasis on staff engagement and culture, and how we have developed a renewed focus on inclusion, ownership and accountability. While this piece is framed around the growth of the organisation, it also provides a series of lessons that Tom has identified through his personal experience, specifically on the importance of compassion, integrity and transparency for effective leadership. It’s been quite the year, congratulations Tom! #learningorganisation #leadership #reflection

13.01.2022 Recently, Dr Judy Putt from the Department of Pacific Affairs at ANU spoke to ABC’s Pacific Beat program on the issue of domestic violence in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Domestic violence is a systemic issue in #PNG with victims and survivors often facing delays, barriers and low rates of convictions when seeking justice. Dr Putt referred to findings from Sustineo’s 2018 research into PNG Community and Business Perceptions of Crime and Safety regarding the odd correlation of low conviction rates and high domestic violence rates in PNG. For more on current research related to domestic violence and the justice system in PNG visit: http://dpa.bellschool.anu.edu.au//dr-judy-putt-discusses-l

09.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about severe socio-economic and health impacts across the Indo-Pacific. Among these impacts, are the adverse impacts on food security, particularly among smallholder farmers. To examine the effects of COVID-19 on food systems, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research has supported research to assess food and nutrition security over the first six months of the COVID-19 crisis. This assessment covers five geographies Ind...onesia, Papua New Guinea, seven Pacific Island Countries, The Philippines and Timor-Leste and identifies cross-cutting themes of broader relevance to the Indo-Pacific region. Well done to all the authors involved, including long-term friends of Sustineo Steven Crimp, Lisa Robins and Federico Davila. We know a huge amount of work went into this and that this leading research will be important for helping to #buildbackbetter to achieve more effective, resilient and sustainable food systems.

06.01.2022 Tomorrow, the Department of Pacific Affairs will be hosting an online webinar on the use of a telephone hotline services to improve information access and dissemination for last year’s Bougainville independence referendum. The webinar, titled Mobile telephones for public messaging: Did the referendum information hotline make a difference? will be on from 4-5pm AEST on Tuesday 27th of October. The webinar will share research findings by the producers of telephone informatio...n hotline that operated for eight weeks just before polling. This service was a national first in the application of a mobile telephone-based platform to deliver public information en masse. The findings of this research have significant potential to shape future efforts to deliver government information directly to citizens. We will be tuning in and look forward to hearing from Dr Amanda Watson and the other panellists as they discuss these important issues. For more information visit: http://dpa.bellschool.anu.edu.au//webinar-mobile-telephone.

01.01.2022 For Sustineo, the last six months have been challenging, and not surprisingly, have required a lot of change. As an organisation, we have made a purposeful effort to focus on #wellness during this period. This period has provided us with opportunities for meaningful #reflection on how we are responding as an organisation. As part of this, Sustineo’s CEO, Tom Sloan, has compiled an outline of steps we have taken and how staff have been engaged throughout to foster a culture of... wellness in the context of COVID-19. The primary purpose of this piece has been to reflect and discuss these changes as a team, including updating it to include the personal experiences of the team. As a team, we decided that there was value in having these discussions and that it is worth sharing our experience as others too may find value in reading these strategies. While not the original intention behind this post, it is perhaps fitting that we share it during #MentalHealthMonth in Australia. This year’s theme is ‘tune in’ meaning to be aware of what is happening within you, and in the world around you. For Sustineo, this exercise has been a great opportunity to check-in with each other as we continue to adapt to the demands of life in the context of COVID-19.
