Does not mean you need to get on their back before the age of 3 or 4, it just means that you start their education by handling them at a young age to build confidence and trust in humans. Now it’s only our ego that takes a bash if the horses don’t do what we want them to do. if you squeeze too much in the middle it’s a bit like a sausage and both ends go ‘blehhch’. Riders sit in a hole in the middle of the horse, driving down, It is uncomfortable to sit in a hole in the back. We need the under-line of the horse shorter so the over-line gets longer; an arch bridge instead of a hanging bridge. 16.01.2022 Somewhere in the world, the 2028 Olympic champion is a foal out in a field. He’s ewe-necked, sickle-hocked, downhill and shaggy, with a club foot and a chunk of... mane missing, because his buddy chewed it off. Somewhere in the world, there’s a young horse that everyone says is too short to make it big. In three years, he’ll be jumping the standards, but right now he’s fat and short and no one is paying him any mind. Somewhere in the world there’s a 7-year-old who can’t turn right, and a 10-year-old who has not shown the ability to put more than two one-tempis together without losing it, and a 14-year-old who hasn’t yet reached his peak, and all of them will be at the next Olympic Games. Somewhere else in the world, there’s a rider who is thinking of packing it in. Maybe the bills are getting out of control, or she’s killing herself to get enough help in her own riding development because she’s having to spend all her time riding and teaching to make ends meet and change needs to happen, and she’s wondering if it’s worth it. She’s thinking it’s time to just give up and be a local trainer, to shelve her dreams of international competition. And then she’s going to shake off the doubt, double down, and make a team in the next 15 years. Somewhere in the world, one of the next great team riders is 9 years old and couldn’t tell if she was on the right posting diagonal if her life depended on it. Somewhere in the world there’s a future team rider who just got told that she’ll never make it because she’s too chubby, because she’s too short, because she’s too late. There are horses who will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars that will never amount to anything, and there are horses who will be touted as the Next Big Thing only to be never seen or heard from again, and there are horses who will fly under the radar until suddenly they’re setting the world on fire. There are riders who will win Junior and Young Rider competitions only to quit riding completely, riders who will be touted as the Next Big Thing only to get stuck in their comfort zones and never come to fruition, and there are riders who will make their first Olympic team at 50, at 55, at even older than that. And yes, there are the horses that will be brilliant from day one, and there are the riders for whom success both comes early and stays late. But more often than not, history has shown that the unlikely story, the horse who was passed over in favor of his more expensive stablemate, the rider who no one saw coming, is the more likely path to greatness. 13.01.2022 How much weight can a horse carry? In my experience, a horse can carry an infinite amount. They can carry the weight of broken hearts, broken homes, and broken... bodies. Countless tears sometimes comb their tangled manes. Moments when parents and friends cannot be there to help and hold a person, horses embrace and empower. They carry physical, mental, and emotional handicaps. They carry hopes and dreams; and they will carry the stress from your day when you cant carry it anymore. They carry graduations, they carry new careers, they carry moves away from everything familiar, they carry marriages, they carry divorces, they carry funerals, they carry babys before they are born, and sometimes they carry the mothers who cannot carry their own baby. The highly trained school horse must, as soon as the rider gives him the impulse, again return to its natural attitude, and not be constantly shortened. Just as it may not always be bent, but must always be quite straight. Even the highest dressage level, as well as the first, must never result in a permanent shortening of the horse in the forehand, especially in the neck. It’s a connecting, a re-cycling, of energy, which is... carried on into the new forward movement. It is a constant re-cycling of energy. So how do I do it? Sending energy forward, catching it again. It is hard to explain, you have to feel it. When you are teaching you have to try and take riders to where they feel that moment. For example, when the horse is in trot, almost take it to walk and then trot it on again, without changing the neck, and making the back end do it. It’s going whoa in front, and go behind, at the same time. 03.01.2022 Connection and communication. You can connect but struggle to communicate and vice versa. The most important part about owning horses is listening. Humans are too busy with their daily lives we forget to stop and listen to our horses. We are so busy on our mission our goals we overlook the small details the horse tries to tell us that could effect our journey with them.
