25.01.2022 Post No.2 from our great day today. Two of our members were presented with State Long Service Medals. Captain Ben received his medal for 12 years service and Lesley (presented separately at Sutherland Hospital) was honoured with the medal, first and second clasp for an incredible 36 years service. Additionally many members of the brigade were presented with the Premiers Citation for their service during the 2019/2020 fire season.

24.01.2022 With steady winds from the north, smoke from a hazard reduction burn being conducted on North Head (Manly) is being blown over the shire. This smoke may persist... for some time under this weather pattern. A small fire started earlier today in the vicinity of the clay target club off Heathcote Road, but was quickly brought under control by the NSW RFS brigades that attended. The Kangaroo Ridge fire at Sutherland remains under control. For live updates, we encourage community members to download the 'Fires Near Me' app and set up a 'watch zone' which will alert you to fires around a specified area.

24.01.2022 40 years ago tomorrow, five volunteers from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade Sutherland Shire tragically lost their lives as a result of a bush fire in the Roya...l National Park. It was Monday 3rd November 1980, just before dawn when local fire fighters were alerted to a bush fire near McKell Avenue, Waterfall. Later in the afternoon, the fire crossed Uloola Track heading north towards Heathcote. It is on this track where the five firefighters tragically lost their lives around 5:00pm as the fire passed through the area, whilst sheltering at their tanker. Other crews were just 200 metres away & were unaware of the tragedy that unfolded further along the track. The fire was contained four days later near Karloo Pool just south of Heathcote. Next week marks the 40th anniversary of when these five brave firefighters from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade, Steve Crunkhorn, 26yo, Gregory Rolfe, 24yo, Vernon Stedman, 21yo, David Marshall, 19yo, and William Cummings, 21yo made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the Sutherland Shire. We remember these young firefighters. Our thoughts are very much with their families, friends and fellow firefighters, many who still remain active today.

23.01.2022 Took delivery of a wonderful donation from a nice young man this afternoon. Oscar collected donations at his Dad’s cafe and brought it into us today. Many thanks Oscar and keep up the good work.

20.01.2022 A special day for our Brigade today deserving of 2 posts. Firstly, congratulations to Sue, Julie, Allen, Kay, Sophie and Alison on passing the BF assessment this morning and now are fully fledged firefighters. Even though we are a Communications Brigade many of our members choose to complete this course. Thanks to Todd for the training and all the assessors.

20.01.2022 A Total Fire Ban has been declared tomorrow for the Greater Sydney Area. Sutherland District is one of the many Districts in a Total Fire Ban with a Severe Fire Danger Rating in place tomorrow. No open fires including coal BBQ's are allowed from midnight tonight. Having an up to date survival plan is important, now more than ever. Make sure it's up to date and ready to go in case a fire starts locally. Fore more information, visit: myfireplan.com.au... Keep vigilant by reporting all fires to 000 immediately. PREPARE. ACT. SURVIVE.

19.01.2022 As a result of the co-operative effort of water-bombing aircraft, firefighting, and support crews, who have been working since the fire started on Saturday afternoon, the Kangaroo Ridge fire burning within the Royal National Park has been contained. A major fire update, advising of this change has been linked below: https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-inf/major-fire-updates/mfu

17.01.2022 As of today, you will begin to see different alert level icons in platforms such as Fires Near Me NSW and on the NSW RFS website. Why the change? As part of a national intitiative, and in line with a recommendation of the NSW Bushfire Inquiry, the NSW RFS is implementing components of the Australian Warning System, including new icons and colour schemes to communicate incidents and warnings to the community.... What does this mean for me? In NSW, this means changes to the icons used for Advice, Watch and Act and Emergency Warning. Over time, these alert levels and icons will apply to other hazards, bringing a greater level of consistency. Check https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//gen/australian-warnings-system and familiarise yourself with the new system. #nswrfs #nswfires #PrepareActSurvive

15.01.2022 Just a tad warm in the shire today. High temps and low humidity mixed with a bit of northwesterly wind. What a great day to sit at home in the aircon and talk about your family fire plan! Take care and keep hydrated.

13.01.2022 Hot weather is on the way this weekend, are you bushfire ready? #prepare #Act #survive
