25.01.2022 THE AMAZING PELVIC FLOOR! Our Women's Health Physio Jessie loves educating women on the pelvic floor! The complexity of the anatomy of the pelvic floor muscles is so impressive. Most people visualise them as either 1 singular muscle or a circular muscle that provides closure to each opening rather than the intricate, interconnected, and amazing design that it is! Coupled with the equally integral fascia or connective tissue, they provide important support to the pelvic orga...ns and play a key role in our urinary and faecal continence mechanism, as well as sexual function. With great power comes great responsibility! A women's health physio appointment will always ensure that you walk away with a much greater understanding of your own anatomy and the function of the pelvic floor and pelvic organs. If you have any concerns regarding your pelvic floor make sure to give us a call and book in for a women's health physiotherapy appointment. #pelvichealth #pelvicfloor #physiotherapy #womenshealth #womenshealthphysio #continence #pelvicfascia #pelvicfloorexercises #pelvicfloorstrength #1in3 #pantsnotpads #sutherlandphysio

23.01.2022 Congratulations to this amazing dancer on passing her pre-pointe assessment! During a pre-pointe assessment our dance physiotherapists assess the dancer to determine their readiness for pointe. This includes assessing pointe and turnout range, foot control, pelvic stability and core control and the application of all of these in basic ballet steps. After the assessment, dancers receive any exercises they may need to further optimise their technique, ensuring their readiness to transition to pointe shoes. If you have a child who is about to transition to pointe shoes, make sure to schedule an appointment with either Kathryn or Letitia to ensure a smooth and injury free beginning to pointe shoe work! #sutherlandphysio #dance #ballet #pointe #pointeshoes #physiotherapy

17.01.2022 Our physiotherapist Jessie is spending the next 2 days sitting listening to the ever amazing Taryn Hallam from Women's Health Training Associates discussing in detail the most up to date research regarding to the childbearing years. Learning all things related to exercise in pregnancy, low back and pelvic girdle pain, pelvic floor and abdominal wall changes and beyond . The research in this area is so interesting and incredibly valuable to pass on to women in their childbear...ing years! . . . 2020 has been an interesting one, but so grateful for the opportunity to still be able to learn such valuable information and upskill #pelvicfloor #abdominalwall #diastisisrecti #exercise #exerciseinpregnancy #lowbackpain #pelvicgirdlepain

17.01.2022 WEIGHT TRAINING In 2017, >100 postmenopausal (all over the age of 58) women with very low, to low bone density were recruited into the LIFTMOR study. It was shown that 2x weekly, 30minute, supervised sessions of high-intensity resistance and impact training completed over an 8 month period significantly improved bone strength and functional performance ... They performed deadlifts, overhead press, back squats as well as jumping chin ups with drop landings. We LOVE this study as it shows no matter what your age or bone density, impact and resistance training can positively influence bone density. Key to this study was that it was a SUPERVISED program. It is essential if you have no experience with weight or impact training that you are assessed by your GP, a Physiotherpist or Exercise Physiologist to ensure there is no reason you cannot participate. We can then go ahead and supervise a suitable program for you. Remember it is never too late (or early) to start to improve your bone density and functional performance #sutherlandphysio #sutherland #weights #weightlifting #strength #bonedensity #osteoporosis #osteoporosisprevention

11.01.2022 Ever wondered what a meniscus tear in a knee looks like? Well, there are a variety of different types! . . The meniscus sits inside the joint, between the surfaces of the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) and acts as a shock absorber. .... . Meniscal tears can happen gradually over time, or with an acute twisting incident. They can present with a variety of symptoms including pain with knee movement/in a deep squat/when fully straightening the knee, pain along the joint line, swelling, a catching sensation, or even locking . . The good news? The majority of meniscal tears can be managed conservatively with physiotherapy, load modification and strengthening exercises, with only a small proportion requiring surgery . #sutherlandphysio #sutherland #physiotherapy #meniscustear #meniscusrehab #kneeinjury #strength Image from @rethinkingphysiotherapy
