23.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Sharks Family, As you will now probably be well aware, BNSW has announced the cancellation of MJL season 2020 due to the complexities the COVID19 Pandemic has placed on the Government and National Sporting Bodies. The decision was one taken with months of meetings, data and communications reviewed. The process to manage things was arduous and considered. The attempt to have a MJL season was a made based on information available a the time. Li...kewise the decision to discontinue the season was made based on Guidance from Basketball Australia, The Government and a consensus from the associations. It is understandable the decision will disappoint and upset many, however the options available to move forward were still going to be COVID dependent and place some clubs under considerable financial impost. In lieu of the MJL season, in the coming days Sutherland Basketball will be announcing a commitment to our Junior Rep Players with a number of programs including targeted trainings, age specific scrimmage days and times. We will also run an off-season program for non-rep players and a Sutherland Super League. Details of further development programs will be advised shortly. With the Season cancellation the front office team will be contacting you with regards to working out appropriate refunds etc. based on your particular circumstances. Sutherland Domestic competitions will still be going ahead, I look forward to seeing all the kids giving their all and enjoying their basketball representing their local teams. I will reiterate, we as an association will do what we can to fill the void the MJL has left for our representative players in order to maintain their skills, enjoy the game and feel part of the SDBA family. I will take this opportunity on behalf of Sutherland Basketball to thank you and your family for your patience and understand whilst we as a greater group come to grips with this developing issue and keep all of us safe and healthy to bounce back into 2021 stronger. Please keep an eye on the club webpage and Facebook group for announcements on the exciting plans that SDBA are developing and implementing in the near future. 19.01.2022 Sydney South Special Olympics Basketball Special Olympics Australia is part of a global inclusion movement using sport, health, education and leadership programs every day around the world to end discrimination against and empower people with intellectual disabilities. ... We were lucky enough to be involved in last Fridays Special Olympics Sydney South session at the Stadium. Sharks Representative player, Emily Garland assisted with some coaching and the scrimmages with the special Olympics athletes, and it was such a fun session. It was just impossible not to smile. All the athletes work hard on improving their skills and basketball knowledge, but what was the most noticeable was how everyone involved is so incredibly kind and encouraging to all of their teammates, regardless of their ability. Basketball has been a major sport in the Special Olympics for Sydney South for decades. It was first developed by Gary Schmalfeldt and John Suva and trainings originally began at Woolooware in 1996, before moving to Menai in 2003, and then to Sutherland in 2008 where still remain. Past Sutherland Sharks Association President Paul O’Neill, joined the coaching team around 15 years ago, and now runs it with the assistance of Mick Harris (AKA Santa) and Kelly Wren. Kelly has represented Australia in Basketball, being a part of the Basketball Australia Pearls team for over 10 years. Kelly’s Dad, Peter Wren is the Sydney South Sports Coordinator. Athletes come from a wide area to train, with some making the trek from Riverwood, Wollongong, Ryde and Penrith. This Special Olympics group have had multiple athletes represent at Basketball NSW State and National Levels over the years. Sydney South Special Olympics basketball offers an environment in which athletes can achieve at their level, gain confidence as well as physical development, and experience positive social interactions. The Special Olympics motto is "Let me win. But if I cannot win, Let me be brave in the attempt." At Sydney South Basketball, all athletes are winners! Anyone who has a team, whether it be your local club team, representative team, or simply a team of friends and would like to challenge the Special Olympics Athletes, or would like to get involved in any way (coaching/assisting with scrimmages/behind the scenes) let us know, and we can pass your details on to coach Paul. They would love to see you! Training sessions run during school terms on Friday nights 7-8.30pm

Cost $150 While the Association was established in 1972 and is fast approaching its 50th birthday, our original stadium is now 40 years old. ... Last year we began a series of projects to give the stadium a much needed makeover to celebrate it's 40th birthday this year. Our fundraising activities were well supported and together with some generous donations and government grants received we were able to make a great start, only to be stopped in our tracks by COVID-19. We are now ready to start our fundraising again and invite you to take part in a new initiative for 2020 so that we can continue with our makeover. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the weekend an outstanding success for Sutherland. Special mention must go to some individuals for their outstanding contribution to the weekend Kathy Pont for her great facebook and instagram posts leading up to and throughout the weekend. Craig Winstanley has been bringing the wow factor to Sutherland Basketball events over many years. He certainly put some extra wow into last weekend by donating both his time and equipment to provide sound and music for the court announcers on both courts all weekend. Brian Elton for organising the donation of pie warmers for our on court canteen stations, He also collected and returned them for us. Brian was also on hand for two early morning starts to assist staff with the last minute setup of equipment and rain shelters for the day ahead as well as his shifts on court as traffic marshal . Tony and Louise Cameron, Denis and Nat Murarotto, Glenn Hutchison and the Friday night super league parents who helped him out, did an amazing and efficient job setting up the courts, canteen stations and seating for the weekend. Nat Murarotto also helped out the next day checking in teams and spectators while Glenn covered many roles over the weekend, including floor wiping, crowd control, traffic marshal and was still around to help Brad Garland and staff with the pack up on Sunday night Alissa McCann, Lisa Frow, Karen and Phil Ezzy and Greg Storok for acting as Bio Security Officers Eddie Truica,Colleen Corkeron Brad Garland and Sarah Dankwa for court control. Sarah also helped out with spectator check in and wiped a floor or two. Tim and Ollie Cavanagh, Isaac Corry, Eden Atkins, Jakeb Duffy, Josh Hayes, David Hilder, Xander Ezzy, Koby Dankwa. Ryan and Blake Mulholland all did an awesome job keeping the players safe on court by rushing in to wipe the courts when needed. To the afore mentioned volunteers and all of our volunteer coaches, managers, club administrators and board members, we cant do without you nor thank you enough. You are the heart of Sutherland Basketball Association! # Go Sharkies
