25.01.2022 The sky had cleared by the start of the @Australia Day awards ceremony at Mooroopna. The committee had prepared to ensure that this event could go ahead and Murray Shields as master of ceremonies ensured that the event runs smoothly. There were songs, poetry, speeches and of course the awards ceremony. The Mooroopna citizen of the year went to Cath Birkett and the Young citizen of the year to Natalie Dobbyn who was also awarded the young citizen for the overall Greater Shepparton area. Congratulations to the award winners and all of the nominees and of course those who did the hard work of nominating them. Speakers acknowledged the impact of colonisation on our first Nations people and the need to examine our history to ensure that we can all celebrate Australia Day on a day in which everyone feels included.

23.01.2022 I’ve called on the state and federal governments to act urgently on seasonal workers to prevent Victoria’s fruit and vegetable produce rotting on the trees and in the fields. With just a matter of weeks to go before fruit and vegetable harvesting is due to start, there are massive problems getting the workers that are needed to pick the crops in the Goulburn Valley as well as other regions across Victoria and the country. The shortage of seasonal workers across Victoria is ...extremely worrying for growers, many of whom have bumper crops and have been facing years of drought, fluctuating overseas markets and high-water price. It is becoming increasingly clear that in order to harvest our fruit and vegetable crops in the Goulburn Valley producers will need access to Pacific Islander workers under the federal government’s Pacific Islander seasonal workers program. If government's can get all those overseas tennis players in for the Australian Open surely they can come up with a solution for our food producers. https://bit.ly/2Kcx8Wf

23.01.2022 The 25th Shepparton Festival will come alive across the Goulburn Valley from the 11th to 27th June 2021. Being a winter festival, it will take advantage of the darkness of night and the magic of projection with a tagline of - unique events in unusual places. The festival committee is looking forward to delivering a safe and exciting festival and reignite the creativity that our region is so well known for. We warmly extend an inviation to the Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson MP for Essendon to attend the launch of the Shepparton Festival and to formally open it #Sheppfest

23.01.2022 It was an early start to be present at the Australia Day awards event in Shepparton this morning. The awards for outstanding service for the overall Greater Shepparton region were citizen of the year Camuran Albania, young citizen of the year Natalie Dobbyn and the community event of the year went to the Quarry Chorus. John Painter was awarded senior citizen of the year with Shepparton Young citizen of the year awarded to Alana Cook and the sports award going to Michael Cla...rke. Congratulations to each of the award winners and thank you for the amazing volunteer work you perform in our communities. Speeches throughout the day recognised the impact of colonisation on First Nations people and the need for an honest examination of our history as we continue the discussion about about how and when to best celebrate Australia Day in the years ahead.

20.01.2022 Fruit pickers are wanted and the peak time here in the Goulburn Valley is February/March I'm told by growers! There are campaigns underway to attract local pickers given the restrictions on international workers and backpackers. But the system needs to work properly and unfortunately I've heard some direct reports of difficulties in relation to getting the information that is needed about work conditions, pay, availability of work, accommodation costs and actually accessing ...the $6000 incentive being offered by the federal government. It is essential that those administering the system do so efficiently and with the best possible customer service so that the experience of those who choose to give it a go is a good one. We want those workers to spread the word as widely as possible thereby attracting even more pickers to the region. Let's hope that new pickers are directed to contractors and growers of good reputation who do the right thing and that any issues are quickly and properly addressed. If there are any problems in this regard please email my office and I will do what I can to have them addressed. It’s physically demanding work with early starts during the hot weather but you’ll learn new skills and make new friends. There are opportunities for training and advancement and people relocating from outside the region will be eligible for $6,000 to cover costs. Go to https://bit.ly/37ivBXr to register

16.01.2022 The Minister for Education James Merlino was in Shepparton to mark the structural completion of Greater Shepparton Secondary College's five separate buildings: three Neighbourhood Buildings with 3 Houses each, an Innovation and Enterprise Centre, and the gymnasium. Touring the building site, all were filled with excitement at how advanced the build is and the detailed designing that went into to creating an intimate and inclusive setting for all students. This is transformational change and investment in our young people. Incoming School Captains Caitlyn Glasson & Ben Okely were thrilled to see the progress and excited for the students who will come after them and be the beneficiaries of the work put into the state-of-the-art secondary school.

13.01.2022 Safer cycling and minimum passing distances will soon become law. From 1st January 2021 it will be mandatory for motorists to give cyclists at least one metre clearance on roads with speed limits up to 60kp/h and 1.5 metres on roads with speed limits above that. I’m sure most of us are already mindful of cyclists but let’s practice and be ready for 1st January.

13.01.2022 We have been trying to teach Maggie how to swim. On our last effort she ended up on Quincy’s back and nearly drowned him. I had to jump into the lake to rescue him. Determined that this wouldn’t happen again we have bought Maggie a lifejacket and tested it out today. She has had swimming lessons and is coming along quite nicely.

13.01.2022 The Federal Health Minister has announced quarantine-free travel for travellers coming from New Zealand to Australia will be suspended effective immediately for the next 72 hours. The decision was based on advice by the AHPPC while the government seeks more information about the single New Zealand case linked to a new COVID-19 strain. Travellers coming from New Zealand to Australia in the next 72 hours will have to go into mandatory hotel quarantine. Anyone who has arrived in... Australia on a flight from New Zealand on or since 14 January is asked to isolate and arrange to be tested and to remain in isolation until they have a negative test. 10.01.2022 Christmas is well and truly nearing and it was great to see so many people down the street in Shepparton and Mooroopna shopping over the weekend. For Peter and I, it was a chance to get some shopping done and catch up with many people along the way. With lots of grandchildren between us there was some serious toy shopping to be done! It is a great feeling to #shoplocal

Victoria is considering a Container Deposit Scheme which involves collecting small empty drink containers, specifically take-away size bottles, cans and cartons, for return to a local collection point. This is a win/win/win opportunity, to benefit the environment, local fund-raising groups as well as provide employment within the collection process. The Government is keen to know your thoughts so go to engage.vic.gov.au/container-deposit-scheme and have your say. Consultation closes Monday 30th November.

03.01.2022 I've called on the Victorian State Government to honour its agreement with Shepparton CFA volunteers to build a four vehicle-wide shed for the CFA at Shepparton’s new fire station. There is concern that the CFA volunteers will not get the promised four-berth shed at the new fire station. CFA volunteers in our community have shown good faith in coming together to give us co-located fire services. The $12.66 million fire station is reportedly due to be completed in December with firefighters expected to move in by the end of February. This matter is particularly urgent, given the increased intensity of bushfire seasons and the ever-increasing need to reduce fuel loads

03.01.2022 On 11 November 1918 at 11am the guns fell silent on the Western Front marking the end of World War One after four long years. This years commemorative services were different due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions in place. Today we commemorated the 75th anniversary of that day - pausing to remember those men and women who sacrificed their lives and those who have suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. Commemorative services were different due to the Covid 19 pandemic restrictions in place. At Parliament today we stood on the front step while the bugler played to honour them. - Lest We Forget
