25.01.2022 ARE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW ADJUSTING TO A RECENT TYPE 1 DIABETES DIAGNOSIS? We are leading a clinical trial to see if an existing autoimmune drug can help people with recently diagnosed #type1diabetes to continue to produce #insulin for a longer period. There are currently no drugs available to help the body continue to produce insulin, and this is the first time baricitinib is being used in a trial with type 1 diabetes patients.... The BANDIT (baricitinib in new onset type 1 diabetes)Trial is open to people aged 12 30, who have been diagnosed with #type1diabetes in the last 100 days. Participants will be required to attend one of the study centres: The Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Royal Children’s Hospital (Melbourne) or St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and to take a pill once a day for two years. As a BANDIT trial participant, you will help advance type 1 diabetes research, and potentially improve the lives of thousands of future type 1 patients. You may also benefit from the additional monitoring of your diabetes provided by your research team. Thanks to JDRF Australia JDRF for supporting this trial.

24.01.2022 Here's a great Q and A article written about our BANDIT (baricitinib in new onset #type1diabetes) clinical trial, funded by JDRF. People aged 12-30 who have been diagnosed in the last 100 days may be eligible to participate. If you would like more information, contact the SVI BANDIT trial coordinator via email at [email protected] or by telephone on 0450 323 962. You can also visit the website at svi.edu.au/bandit

23.01.2022 We are delighted to announce that members of our SVI family have been recognised in the 2021 #AustraliaDay Honours List. Brenda Shanahan has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia, Christine Tarascio has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia and Claire O'Callaghan has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia. Christine's award is for significant service to medical research and charitable organisations. She has served for many years on the Found...ation Board and is Chair and founder of the SVI Discovery Fund. Brenda’s award is in recognition of her distinguished service to medical health research, to the business and finance sectors, to corporate governance, and to philanthropy. Brenda was Chair of the SVI Board for 14 years and has been a philanthropic supporter of SVI over many years. Claire's award is for service to the community through charitable organisations. She has served on the Foundation Board and is founder and Chair of SVI's Support Group, still going strong after more than 30 years. "Over many decades, Brenda, Christine and Claire have demonstrated unshakable belief in the power of research to improve health outcomes for those in need. They have all shown support to SVI through their long-term leadership, #philanthropy and generosity," Professor Tom Kay, Director SVI. "On behalf of all of us at SVI, we take great pleasure in congratulating Brenda, Christine and Claire on these very well-deserved honours." See more

21.01.2022 Our peak body, The Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI), has released their Budget Submission, which calls for new strategic investments to help safeguard the future of Australia’s medical research workforce. These investments will boost Australia’s preparedness for future health challenges by providing new career opportunities to our most talented medical researchers. "The 2021 Budget will determine whether Australia seizes the opportunity to become a global leader in medical research, attracting new investment, technology and clinical trials."

21.01.2022 The BANDIT Trial has been set up to test an existing autoimmune drug on people aged between 12-30 who have been diagnosed with #type1diabetes in the last 100 days. Researchers at St Vincent’s Institute in Melbourne (SVI) have discovered that a drug called baricitinib may help people who have type 1 diabetes to produce insulin for longer after diagnosis. It is expected to stop the immune system from attacking the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. There are no approved treatments that are able to do this. On #WorldDiabetesDay, we dedicate this trial to all those who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, their family and friends, and hope this research is the stepping stone we need to reach a new treatment for type 1 diabetes.

16.01.2022 While most of us are happy to volunteer for our children’s school, sports team or local community group for a year or two, it takes real dedication to commit yourself to 31 years of fundraising for medical research. SVI Foundation Board member Claire O’Callaghan leads the SVI Support Group - I set up the Committee with then-Director Jack Martin’s wife Christine and we held our first event in 1989. Sadly, Christine passed away, but she left behind a great legacy. In 2005, the Group’s annual event evolved into an annual dinner to provide Top-up Scholarships to support SVI’s Honours and PhD students. Incredibly, since then, their efforts have supported almost 100 students. including 15 students currently undertaking studies at the Institute. Read more: https://bit.ly/2W8sPOp

12.01.2022 Another great event to put into your diary-coming up next Friday, 20 November.

10.01.2022 Three long-serving members of the SVI Foundation Board have retired and were recognised for their exceptional contributions at the Foundation Board meeting in November. Collectively, the three board members, Brenda Shanahan, Maria Palazzolo and Jim Hatzimoisis, served SVI for more than 31 years. It is bittersweet to bid these loyal Board members farewell after their many years of dedicated service, says Karen Inge, Chair of the SVI Foundation Board. ... On behalf of SVI, I would like to thank them for their leadership and friendship through the years. We are happy that they will remain part of our SVI family. Read more: https://bit.ly/2JRsvB7

10.01.2022 We are proud to announce that SVI Director Professor Tom Kay is the proud the recipient of the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) Kellion Award, granted by the Kellion Foundation and the ADS to Australians who have made an outstanding contribution in #diabetes research, clinical or service areas in Australia. Many of you will have met Tom, and know that his passion for understanding, and finding better treatments for #type1diabetes, continues to drive his research projects. Congratulations to Tom, on this well-deserved recognition. https://bit.ly/38tNYtM

10.01.2022 A gentle reminder of another way to support our #type1diabetes research. Thanks to T1D Advocate for change

07.01.2022 A LIFETIME OF GIVING BACK In our latest newsletter, we feature Joan Chappell who was a nurse at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne - our clinical research partner - and was married to SVI's former Board Chair, Jock Chappell. Joan became an active member of SVI's support group and remains a supporter of our medical research, even though Jock unfortunately passed away from dementia in 2008. In addition to regular annual donations, Joan left a bequest in her Will so that SVI’s med...ical researchers can continue to make headway in the treatment and cure of our most common diseases. Medical researchers discover wonderful things and I think if you can afford to support it, you have an obligation to do so, Joan reflects. I’m very privileged, I live comfortably, and so I believe I need to share that with people. That's Joan with her daughter and granddaughter below. You can read more about her inspirational story here: https://bit.ly/3qRYSQL For more information or a confidential discussion about making a gift to SVI in your Will, contact the SVI Foundation on (03) 9231 2480. #philanthropy #bequests See more

07.01.2022 Well, the phone has been ringing off the hook, ever since Grant McArthur from The Herald Sun wrote this great piece for us in today's paper! We're very proud to launch the BANDIT (baricitib in new onset #type1diabetes) Trial today. If you've been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within the last 100 days, and are aged between 12 - 30, you may be eligible to participate. Thanks to Libby Rose and her mum, Tracy, for sharing their story!

03.01.2022 Thanks to the Heart Foundation for awarding Dr Max Lim a $150,000 Vanguard Grant for a project that will look at developing a new treatment to protect the heart from damage following a heart attack. The project will bring together a multi-institutional group, including Professor Derek Hausenloy from Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, Dr Hsin-hui Shen from Monash University, Dr Jess Holien from RMIT and SVI’s Dr Davis McCarthy. We have discovered a new drug that can bind ...specifically to the human Drp1 protein, inhibiting mitochondrial division and protecting animals from heart damage after heart attack. In this project, we aim to deliver this drug using a new nanoparticle-based delivery system that will target it specifically to the injured heart tissue. This will reduce the possibility of unwanted side-effects, Max says. Without the Heart Foundation Vanguard Grant, we wouldn’t have been to able continue with this project; I am thrilled we have been given the opportunity to take this study further. https://www.svi.edu.au//heart_foundation_vanguard_grant_a/

02.01.2022 Good news for the medical research sector! Thank you Jaala Pulford MP Tim Pallas
