23.01.2022 A little bit of Swag Family history up for sale here. Mum and Dad are selling up at Swansea. We stopped over here exactly a year ago and had a run of salmonella, chest infection, 3 stitches in a finger. The day after we left Nic crashed heavily and Wilfy skun his face badly. For all that we love this place and it'll be sad when it sells. Good place to escape the worries of the world at the moment too!
23.01.2022 Our friend Yoav rang up with an offer we couldn’t refuse. A day in the deep south of Tasmania exploring a cave (and a cave tree) with his little fella Lenny and friend Serena. The bike helmets came in handy Here in Tassie life feels a lot more normal than it has for a while and being able to get out on a field trip is pretty special. Hope you’re all doing well out there and getting a few mini adventures in where you can.
22.01.2022 We are totally ready Hobart, and the Toyota jump proves it! Get down here for a 7pm Shari start @ UTAS Stanley Burbury Theatre
17.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of National Reconcilation Week. Reconcilation is a journey, but we reckon we still have a long way to go. Last year we met Garawa Traditional Owners, Yurkurwal (also known as Nancy McDinny) and her sister Yurburyu out the front of the Waralungku Arts Centre in Borroloola, Northern Territory. #inthistogether #nrw2020 #borroloola Reconciliation Australia #truthtelling
17.01.2022 As a family we’re the sum of four parts, five if you include the dog, eleven if you include the chooks. Here’s a bit of the backstory to one of the parts.
17.01.2022 Teachers and parents that are scrambling for online Primary School learning content can freely download and use the Swag Family workbooks from last year’s adventure project. They have full teacher’s guides and can be used on iPads or printed out for a bit of old school ed-ya-cation. Used with the videos off the website they might make the online experience a bit more fun. Please share among you teaching and home schooling buddies. It’s totally free and no strings attached. We do get you to register so we can send you the password to access the downloads. When all this is over we might gently hassle you to get us to come into your school and share the adventure live too. Really gently though. Go to: www.swagfamily.com.au/subscribers/ and scroll down to ‘complete a new subscription form’.
15.01.2022 We have some family news to share... we’re heading to the small community of Pormpuraaw on western Cape York to teach at the school there in 2021, and no, not by bike These photos are about as close as we got last year as we traversed the Burke Development Road. Nervous Apprehensive Pumped up like a bike tyre ... Just like how we felt before we left to ride around Australia, so it’s probably a good idea! This means, for Tassie schools, there’s one last chance to share the Swag Family story with your students in the final two weeks of the year from 7th-17th December. www.swagfamily.com.au/book/ See more
15.01.2022 CANCELLED FOR NOW... We've just had to cancel the upcoming Swag Family events for Stanley, Devonport, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Toogoolawah If you already bought tickets the refunds are on their way. The plan is to reschedule them for September-October but we'll see how things go over the next few months and let you know. Our school events for the next few months will also have to be rescheduled for later in the year. On the bright side the calendar has cleared up nicely for writing an adventure book
13.01.2022 Counting down to the Hobart show this Friday night... bigger screen and banging big speakers for the videos. Can’t wait. Tickets available on the door or at https://www.trybooking.com/BHSVB See you there to celebrate Tassie Bike Week
13.01.2022 Fire was such an important part of the adventure last year. Most nights we lit one for cooking and comfort. Now back at home we light one for warmth as Winter approaches in southern Tassie. Today we lit some much bigger ones to help clean up down at Mewstone Vineyard. The biggest pile caught on with the sun setting and we watched the glowing sparks swirl upwards. By staring at the top of the flames long enough they begin to blur and dance like fireflies. Without wanting to sound like pyro’s, fire is one of our favourite things.
07.01.2022 *Bookings Open TAS Only* We are open for bookings in Tasmania only (the radioactive bit at the bottom of the map) for school performances of the Swag Family for the rest of 2020. In the 50 minute show suited to all ages we tell the story of our year long journey around Australia by tandem bikes with the kids in tow. There’s no better time to talk to students about grit and resilience. More info at https://www.swagfamily.com.au/book/ Please share with Tassie teachers if you k...now one of the legends. And can you believe that we only just unpacked some boxes from the journey today! As we travelled we collected discarded signs and number plates and sent them home either through the post or with other Tasmanian travellers in caravans. What a shameful level of procrastination
06.01.2022 Last year we shared our story mostly through photos and videos. Making the videos on the road as we travelled was a steep learning curve. As our best laid plans have been best laid aside recently it’s been good to practice some of these developing skills to make this short video of my brother Matt and Cathy’s wine venture (another brother Jonny is the winemaker so it’s a fair dinkum family affair!).They’re building a winery and cellar door just down the road here in Flowerpot. We’re waking up every day being grateful that’s we snuck in our adventure last year and we get to hang out at home in this place this year.
04.01.2022 With our Adventure Learning Australia hats on we’re involved in this great project to share the story of Tasmania’s unique burrowing crayfish with primary schools in Tassie’s north west. If you’re a teacher up in that part of the world we’d love to hear from you.
01.01.2022 Just about to have a chat with ABC Hobart’s Leon Compton. ABC local radio were a constant support last year to help us get the adventure learning message out as we rode around. It’s also been great to put an extra voice out there for cyclists on the roads and the need for all road users to look out for each other out there. Celebrating Tassie Bike Week Bicycle Network
01.01.2022 Rewind to this time last year and we headed off the bitumen of the Great Northern Highway and onto the dirt of the Boreline Road towards Marble Bar. The road started off soft and we were tempted to head back to the blacktop after only a few hundred metres. We persevered. Along the road we met the irrepressible herpetologist Brian Bush, Annabelle Coppin and the crew from Yarrie Station, some furtive gold prospectors and camped out under some big empty sky. We have a section f...rom this part of the adventure in our school performance where we talk about how the unknown road can give you the biggest rewards. Big thanks to Cambridge Primary, Woodbridge School, The Friends School, Blackman Bay Primary and Fahan (later this week) for bringing us in to share these stories with your students. We are now taking bookings for Term 4 in Tasmanian schools... www.swagfamily.com.au/book/ See more
