24.01.2022 Interesting item posted on Sherros web-site about EOC decision in South Australia which bans single sex bowls competitions from next year. No Club or state (Mens or Womens) chapionships in future? Only one State side in future? (could be a problem if, say, a woman is slected in the State side competing in the (Mens) National Round Robin event). I wonder how long before Bowls Wa have to confront this situation?

23.01.2022 Third Division & Under State Pairs Phil Preedy and Paul Loveland represented Swan in this event played at Osborne Park Bowling Club on 7 April 2012. They won through their sectional games (two solid wins and a draw), and play the finals on Monday 9 April Keep going men - you both looked good in the final section game

22.01.2022 DUMPING OF BOWLS Bowls WA have incorporated a new Clause in the Field of Play Rules (pp4-12 of last Seasons Fixture Book) specifically to cover dumping. The new Clause 24 states: "Player Damaging the Green... The Controlling Body shall be at liberty to warn a player if in their opinion he is causing damage to the green. Following the warning, if the player continues to cause damage to the green, the Controlling Body may request the player to retire from the green and take no further part in the match. 24.1 Refusing to leave the green If the player refuses to leave the green, the player will be considered to become a defaulting player under law 1.3.3 and law 1.3.10 will apply. The umpires decision is final." This new ruling as advised by Bowls Australia and used by Bowls NSW is designed to assist clubs in protecting their playing surfaces. It covers all types of potential damage, including the poor delivery (height or weight). The effect of this Ruling means that, for Pennant competition, the Controlling Body (Bowls WA) is represented by the Umpire of the Day at each Club. So now, for example, if in the opinion of the Umpire of the Day appointed by the Valley Club, a player is causing damage to the green, the player will receive a warning and following that may be requested to retire from the green. So all you fat people who leave hoof-marks when you walk - watch out!

22.01.2022 Common Sense Scoreboard Decision On Friday 11 May, Bowls Australia issued the following advice regarding the use of scoreboards: DR 3.4 - use of a scoreboard... There have been some queries recently regarding who is entitled to turn a scoreboard now that World Bowls have decreed the skip must keep the scorecard. By way of background and as per Law 17 in the Laws of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Second Edition,MNAs (in this case Bowls Australia) have the opportunity to make domestic regulations (DRs) on a range of Laws and Bowls Australia (BA) has included an explanation on each allowable Law in the DRs. Law 37.1.8 allows a domestic regulation regarding the use of a scoreboard instead of using one of the scorecards. This is very prevalent in South Africa, where they dont require both skips to keep a scorecard and instead use one scorecard and one scoreboard. As BA doesnt allow this way of scoring in Australia, in the domestic regulation (DR 3.4) BA reiterated our stance that: A scorecard should be kept and completed by the skip of each team. The second sentence of DR 3.4 was added stating: If there is no scoreboard attendant available, the skips between them should keep the scoreboard updated at least every second end. Although it is not mentioned anywhere in the Laws who can turn the scoreboard, this sentence was included to provide advice and guidance (typically for pennant matches) to ensure that the scoreboard would match the official recording of the game the scorecard. After consultation with World Bowls on this matter, the wording of the DR will be reviewed at the next Law review. In the interim, it is the NOCs determination that as the scoreboard attendant can be any person appointed by either the controlling body, team manager or the host venue. Therefore, the scoreboard at the end of each rink or the main board can be adjusted by any player whether they are involved in the game or a volunteer. It is then up to the skips to ensure that the scorecards and the individual rink scoreboard are aligned at least every second end (when skips are at the scoreboard end).

22.01.2022 Two-bowl Singles The 2-bowls Singles was an Ken Coghill road show from go to whoa. As Club Captain, Ken single handedly scheduled the game, re-scheduled it when it was rained out last week, and organised the draw (with a bit of help from Mick)... A rather disappointing turn-out of ten competitors (out of 40 hoping to play Pennants in a weeks time) enjoyed a beautiful warm Spring day of bowls on the back green which was immaculately presented by our Greenkeeper Graeme. The finalists were Club Captain Ken Coghill v President Mick Ecket. The two played an enthralling game, with the scores locked together numerous times and never more than a pair of shots between them throughout. Going into the last end of the game with the scores locked at 15-all, Ken drew his first bowl inside that of Micks. Micks second bowl was just wide of being shot. That gave Ken the chance to draw a second counter, and game, with his last bowl - and opportunity that he grabbed with both hands. Well done Ken, on winning the first Club event of the season. And congratulations to Mick on going so close to winning.

16.01.2022 Swans newest member (Ken) demonstrated that ewtirement has added an extra zing to his bowls, by carrying Scottie to second place (and a handy $55) in the pairs comp. at Morley on Saturday

16.01.2022 Our Member Lyn dug up the following newspaper article (goodness knows what she was doing sifting through 1903 copies of the West Australian Newspaper!). The article doe throw up some interesting points: . The West Australian put a lot more into bowls coverage then, than it does now . The Club had a bundle of high-profile members (which obviously helped catch the eye of the Government and the monied circle of the Colony . There was certainly no fear of upsetting people...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Ah for the good old days when women dressed like Ladies, and men dressed like Gentlemen! I couldnt tell whos who in the pic, but Im sure the inaugural committee members elected at a meeting at the Guildford Hotel in 1897 would be there somewhere. Patrons NK Ewing and J Howard Taylor, President HC Rason, Vice-Presidents RA Dixon and Drs Steward and Waylen, Secretary P Gardner, Treasurer WJ Dixon, and Committee Members Messers Harber, Jones, Clinch, Brown, Guppy and Bringerers

13.01.2022 BUMMER! Bowls WA have made last-minute changes to the Pennant schedule - which has really thrown the cat among the pigeons so far as our Ladies Saturday program goes. The 3rd Div Sections have been condensed from four to three, which has eliminated the first-round bye that Swan were looking forward to (it was going to accommodate the Melbourne Cup trippers very nicely!). It means more travel as well, with games against Mosman Park (twice - but the view is nice), Innaloo (twice - without the nice view), Hollywood-Subiaco, Dalkeith-Nedlands and Morley (the nearest Club in the Section)

09.01.2022 The old FB for the Club (which was actually only for individuals anyway) has now been de-activated.

09.01.2022 The winter recess for Swan bowlers is in full swing at present. It seems that a good few members seem to take an (unhealthy) interest in winter shenanigans at Steel Blue Oval. DONT FORGET! The Clubs AGM is scheduled for Sunday week (15 July at 10:00am. There are still a few Office Bearer positions to be filled by members who want to be involved in setting the focus and management of the Club. So make sure that you are financial (and can thus vote at the meeting) and attend to ensure we have a quorum.

08.01.2022 Tomorrow is the last game of the first half of the 2012-13 Season. The results in in all sides will be critical in determining the fate of the Clubs Pennant sides for the season. The 1 Blue side are playing at home to Mundaring, who are very cocky following some good performances in the past couple of weeks and are snapping at our heels. A loss could see us slump to ninth spot (but lets not go there!), and a win will see us possibly elevated out of the relegation zone to si...xth spot. Third Division White have a tough assignment, playing second-placed Morley at Morley. A loss would see the side maintain their severnth ladder position, but edging closer to the relegation zone. However, a win will see them slip one spot ahead of the loser of the Mundaring-Bassendean game, and a step closer to a promotion play-off position on the ladder. Sixth Div Lime are near the bottom of the ladder, by virtue of often sharing rink wins have not been able to pull off enough aggregate wins to date. One consolation - they will not be relegated! The Ladies Third Division Pink (who comes up with these colours!) are in fourth spot - edged out by Mundaring on per centage. They had a tight game in their first meeting with Osborne Park, sharing the rink wins but losing the aggregate by just six shots. A win here will be a well-deserved morale -booster.

07.01.2022 Ima bit confused about the bowls results! Somewhere between round 8 and 9 Wanneroo lost 6 pennant points (according to BWA, theirpoints aggregated after round 8 was 33.5. They scored 2 points in round 9 -but their aggregate dropped to 29! Have BWA madea mistake, or did Wanneroo do something naughty and had points taken off them?

07.01.2022 Pennants has well and truly got under way for the season. Swan bowlers have obviously decided on a different tact this season - a gentle start and a flying finish. We had better not leave it too late though! Our 3rd Div got off to a flying start and belted Bedford 7.5 - 0.5 in the first game of the season. Unfortunately they were well and truly brought down to the ground on Saturday when Innaloo white-washed us under the cover at Inaloo. 1st Div started the other way around. ...Osborne Park (2) stitched us up badly to the tune of 1-7. It should be a wake-up to a good few bowlers that there is plenty of work to do on the training track. The game on Saturday was a bit better, in that we beat Warwick 6-2 in a damp miserable day at Swan. Swans newly formed 6th Division accounted themselves well without winning an aggregate - although we did did within two shots of Belmont City on Saturday. Im sure the first win is not war away. Lets make sure we all play to our ability next week See more

06.01.2022 Congratulations to our Pairs Club Champions, Jim Finlay and Tony Natalotto - for the third year in a row! I believe they did not have it all their own way in the final though. George Tibbles and Mick Garner were one-up going into the penultimate end, and then dropped four shots to three-down with the final end to play. George came within an ace of ditching the jack with his last bowl, which would have given him and Mick game. Come to think of it that is remarkably like Tony and Jims finish in their semi-final, when they were one-down going into the second-last end picked up four shots. And then survived their opposition last bowl which almost picked up the jack to snatch the game.

06.01.2022 Midland-Morrison Purslowe Plate Carnival A good day for a few Swan lads on Wednesday! ... Although the field was small (14 teams), Midland-Morrison and Purslowe Funerals did not scrimp on the prizes. Mick Eckett, Phil Preedy, Paul Loveland and Dave Scott combined to win their three games and scoop up the $1,000 first prize money and get their names inscribed on the perpetual Purslowe Plate trophy. Second and third place-getters were were in the prize carve-up, as were the three round-winners. The Swan team started the day well by accounting for a very cock-sure Police team of Corny, Brett McCance, Karl wots-his-name and Darren Rowlinson. This was followed up by a win against a Midland-Morrison team lead by Martin Wattleworth and finally a hard-fought win over a Northam team of bowlers. Got to say, Swan bowlers are spoilt in having the greens we do to play on. The grass on "B" green at Midland-Morrison was certainly testing on all players. The wide hand played reasonably (albeit rather slowly), but the narrow hand! It was very distracting , taking 25cms of green, and still finishing wide of the centre-line.

05.01.2022 Mens Triples Championship Club Captain Ken Coghill led from the front on Sunday in Guiding Dave Scott and Grant Dobson to a closely-fought final triumph over last seasons champions in Robbie Glerum, Shane Anning and newbe Graeme Carey. Kens team trailed for much of the game but grabbed three shots on the final end to claim a two-shot victory Both Ships - in particular - played outstanding bowls during the game which kept a goodly number of Club spectators watching the game interested though-out the game. The Plate final was played at the same time and likewise was an enthralling affair. Tom Kealy took on the Skips role in the final and led Luke Trew and Neil Minchin to take the lead in the second-last end and go on to defeat a solid combination of Shane Baumgarten, Allen Mathews and Bill Harris.

05.01.2022 Straight from the horse's mouth (well, Bowls WA minutes of the Bowls Management Coomittee): "9.1 Appeal Wanneroo Bowling Club (F&E decision) After declaring conflicts of interest G Leeks and B Burton abstained from discussion. Kerry Andersen chaired the meeting during this time. The Wanneroo Bowling Club had forwarded an appeal against the severity of penalty imposed by the F&E committee in relation to the playing of an uncleared player. The penalty imposed had been the los...s of all points for the match being 6 . After consideration and noting that in season 2011/2012 two players had received clearances either in or out of Wanneroo under the same circumstances and hence the procedure should be well known by the club, the appeal was dismissed and the penalty of loss of all points would stand." This is a tough penalty for Wanneroo, but it moves Swan 1-Blue North up one place in the ladderinto 6th position. Let's finish the season strongly and justify Ron Head's prediction that we would finish in third position on the ladder See more

05.01.2022 Paul taking an extra-wide stance delivering his bowl during the 3rd Div & Under State Pairs

04.01.2022 Congratulations Ladies 3-Pink side A good win against Mundaring on Saturday. You kept the flag flying for the Club - after rather inauspicious results from the Mens 1-Blue, 3 White and 6 Lime sides.

04.01.2022 Phil delivers the last bowl in the 3rd Div & Under State Pairs. Whats with that backward step Phil?

04.01.2022 ROUND THREE - PENNANTS All hail 3rd Div for a mighty effort in toppling Bassendean. Come on 1st Div! Going down by 3 points to Quinns is really not good enough. Hang in there 6th Div. You will crack it shortly....Continue reading

03.01.2022 Congratulations Dale and Mariane on undertaking the Umpires acceditation course at Bowls WA. Bear with Old Colin - there is probably no easy way of teaching the Laws of the Game, other than to skim through Clause-by-Clause. Just remember - you dont have to memorise the whole book, but know where to look in it when you sre queried on a particular Law. (and whenever you are asked to make a decision concerning the application of the Laws - have the book in your hand and dont rely on memory alone!)

03.01.2022 The Pennant season is getting closer, and time for members to get serious about training/practice games. I have an invite to the Mt Lawley Bowling Club Mens Fours carnival on 1 September (the pre-curser to the Consistency Singles competition) which is good for anyone who is interested. It only costs $100 per team ($25 each) and includes lunch. I have played in this a few times in the past, and would have loved to get a team for this year too - but SWMBO has already committed me for that day. It is a good opportunity to get a serious hit-out against some good competition leading into Pennants. Get a few members together and enter.
