23.01.2022 Swanny Ocean Classic 2020 is tomorrow! And if you are looking for a bit of event history before you get involved: The first Swanny Ocean Classic took place in 1986. It took significant dedication of two long serving members to initiate, organise and make a success in the early years. It was Ron Haigh, and Swanny Life Member Colin Cook, that we have to thank for making it happen! You can see copies of the 1986 entry forms pictured, which required significant labour to produc...e, print and physically distribute. Not to mention entries needing to close ten days prior to the event, to allow for all the manual processing effort required! Now entering is as easy as following a link which allows online registrations right up to 7pm the night before https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=37076, or heading to the swannyoceanclassic.com website to find out details and times for the day. 1st Saturday in February is all you have to remember, so you can save the date every year! Thats when its been held, with only two exceptions - one in 1989 due to a forced reschedule. On the day of the swim there was such dense fog the Cottesloe Pylon couldnt be seen from the shore, in summer! The re-scheduled April date also having to be postponed a further week because Tropical Cyclone Ned crossing the coast brought winds in excess of 100km/h to Perth. At the first swim in 1986 there was just under 100 swimmers participating. In recent years youve been able to join over 1000 participants taking part to swim, run or paddle the 2km from Cott to Swanny! Our friends at Cottesloe SLSC started the Cottesloe Classic Mile two years earlier than the Swanny Ocean Classic, and was at the time a 1.6km swim parallel to the coast. With Swanny introducing a 2.2km swim the original tagline (seen in the image below) for it became Longest Swim Ever Along the W.A. Coast! In recognition of Colin Cooks contribution to starting and running the event for the previous 13 years, the 1999 swim was named the Cottesloe to Swanbourne Colin Cook Ocean Classic This is just a small snippet of Swanny Ocean Classic history that Swanny Historian and Life Member Tim Tucak shared with the club in the build up to this years event! As much as wed encourage beach activity in normal circumstances - this weekend stay safe and think if its essential to head to the beach. 04.01.2022 We’re working to make Swanny Surf Club an even more environmentally responsible and recycling-rad place! ‘Containers for Change’ gives West Australians the opportunity to provide positive change in the environment, support their local community and create jobs! It’s also a great way to fundraise for our Club! We’re now collecting eligible containers from all Club events - so look out for new bins in the Rampant Swan and make sure you sort your waste responsibly!... We also encourage members to collect at home and donate the proceeds back to Swanny. This can be done by dropping your containers off to a collection station and using Swanny's SCHEME ID to donate the funds straight to the Club. Our Scheme ID is C10313119. 02.01.2022 The 2019/20 season wont end with the grand finales of Nipper States, Aussies and quite likely other surf life saving competitions we all love, due to COVID-19. Tough decisions by SLSWA and SLSA, but no doubt the right ones for the time, based on expert opinion. At our core we are lifesavers, and hopefully these precautions play a role in doing just that.
