25.01.2022 We again want to thank our community for their support and patience through what has been an incredibly challenging 2020. Over the year we have been directed by the Victorian Chief Health Officer to restrict visitor access to our health service in order to help stop the spread of COVID-19. These high level, state-wide restrictions on visiting have now been removed. What that means is that visiting arrangements are now able to be established by individual health services withi...n their own context and capacity. This is something we are constantly reviewing how we can ensure we provide people in hospital, our aged care consumers, and those attending appointments with the support of their loved ones while still adhering to the screening and record keeping requirements (which have not reduced). We are required to have a record of everyone who enters our health service, they need to be temperature checked and asked a series of questions to ensure they are safe to enter. We have continued to improve and refine this process over time. We understand the constant changes in directions can be confusing, and can sometimes seem contradictory. We ask for patience but we are also very open to feedback. Please speak with us about how we keep you informed and connected. You can email [email protected] at any time. A snapshot of current visiting arrangements (visit our website for full detail): - Acute/Sub-Acute: 12 noon - 6pm daily - Aged care: 12 noon - 6pm daily - Midwifery: 10.30am-1pm & 3-8pm daily - Palliative care: no time limit Head to www.shdh.org.au/patie/covid19-current-visiting-information/

25.01.2022 Our staff have been getting in the festive spirit decorating doors around the organisation as part of our 'Deck the Halls' competition - well done to everyone involved! Wishing our community a happy holiday season. Please remember the importance of hand hygiene and physical distancing when interacting with loved ones over this time. This year has been incredibly challenging so we hope you find time to relax and connect with those around you, in a COVID-safe way. We are all hoping for a bright and healthy 2021.

24.01.2022 Antimicrobial Awareness Week World Antimicrobial Awareness Week aims to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making common infections harder to treat and increasing... the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. Many factors have accelerated the threat of AMR worldwideincluding overuse and misuse of medicines in humans, livestock and agriculture, as well as poor access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene. COVID-19 The misuse of antibiotics during COVID-19 pandemic could lead to accelerated emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. COVID-19 is caused by a virus, not by a bacteria and therefore antibiotics should not be used to prevent or treat viral infections, unless bacterial infections are also present. Our Director of Pharmacy, Alexandra Sharpe highlights that it is important to take antibiotics as prescribed by doctors and not to pressure doctors for antibiotics if they feel they won’t help your situation. With Swan Hill District Health’s continued commitment to our vision "Connected Care, Best Experience", we have started a program to provide patients with access to Antibiotic Stewardship Rounds lead by Alexandra Sharpe and Bendigo Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr Andrew Mahony. This will ensure that all inpatients get ongoing access to consultation from the team to make sure they are provided information on their antibiotics, are on the right antibiotic for the right duration and thereby reducing antibiotic resistance in the community. #AntibioticAwarenessWeek Pictured: SHDH Director of Pharmacy Alexandra Sharpe
