24.01.2022 We have been speaking up to make sure that informal respite support is available for families with children with disability under the stage 3 and 4 restrictions.... We can now confirm that children with disability in Metro Melbourne and Regional Victoria can: Go to a relative’s or family friend’s home for care, including overnight care. This must be a pre-existing arrangement. Travel more than 5km and travel during curfew to get to the relative or family friend. Relatives and family friends can also come to your home to assist with the care of children with disability. This is allowed under the care and compassionate grounds.

19.01.2022 My son and I made a little story this week to brighten up your day... Feel free to share with those who need a smile.

18.01.2022 P I C K Y E A T E R S V S . P R O B L E M F E E D E R S The sense of touch is an important one. It is our oldest, most primitive and pervasive sense. There are some commonly disliked foods that have a textural connection. Foods that are slimy can be rejected by fussy children, along with foods that are lumpy, or have bits in them. Depending on how a food is prepared, this can affect the texture. Children might like raw crunchy carrots, but not like them if they're cooked... until they're soggy. Likewise with tomatoes, children might like them pureed in a sauce, but not like them raw. It’s important to understand that eating DOES NOT begin at the mouth. 1 First, we must tolerate the physical presence or the look of the food. This might even include just being in the same room as the food. 2 Then being able to interact with the food without directly touching the food to your skin, maybe by using a kitchen utensil like a mini food chopper or a fork. 3 Next, our body needs to process and manage the smell or odor of a food. 4 The play then expands to include touching the food with your fingers, hands, body, and mouth. 5 Tasting comes next, which might look like quickly poking the food with the tip of your tongue, or maybe putting the food in your mouth, and spitting it out. 6 Finally, we are ready to practice chewing and swallowing. Can you work out what stage this little champion is at. He has been working so hard to get to this stage with support from Nat and Josie! To tolerate being in the same room as some of these foods was a huge milestone! #sosfeeding #feedinginterventions #playwithfood #sensoryprocessing #fussyeaters #problemeaters #paediatrictherapy #buildingskills #empoweringfamilies

16.01.2022 Needs are needs. You cannot train a child to not have needs, you can only train her to not express them. The needs remain. Irrespective of whether they are expressed or inhibited, the needs remain. @australianpsychologist

15.01.2022 'Understanding basic #brain #development is a big factor in why I chose positive parenting. This is a very simplistic model of a very complex organ, but think o...f the brain in terms of two parts an upper brain and a lower brain. The lower brain is fully developed at birth and regulates functions like breathing, digestion, reflexes, and heart rate. The upper brain is developing in infancy and continues to develop throughout childhood, not reaching maturation until the mid 20's! The upstairs brain is responsible for emotions control, empathy, and complex thinking. Information is key to understanding behaviors such as tantrums and aggression, because when you realize that a toddler simply does not have the cognitive capability to pause and reflect (a function of the underdeveloped upstairs brain), suddenly you understand that this isn't poor #behavior but purely an issue of brain development. This knowledge helps us provide #empathy and #understanding in situations which would otherwise cause us a lot of frustration.' Rebecca Eanes #neurochild #brainscience #development

We will be screening for travel to NSW & exposure sites as part of our standard COVID appointment screening until the health department can assure us that this risk has passed. We are able to change your appointment to a Telehealth video or phone appointment while you are waiting for your test results. Masks will be mandatory within the clinic setting. 09.01.2022 Thanks for sharing Nicole Mcleod Occupational and Hand Therapy Services The NDIA has released a new information pack on how school-aged participants can use their funds during the Stage 3 and Stage 4 COVID restrictions. We are always here to help, but there may also be additional services that can be accessed.... Example: 'While it is not the role of a support worker to provide education (still NO flexibility to include education support/tutoring!!) to a participant, your child may have funding for a support worker to: provide in-home support adjusting their hours to a more suitable time supporting your child’s personal needs provide support for daily tasks assisting with resources online.' Example: 'Social disconnection, uncertainty and change in routine can see an increased need for behavioural or mental health supports and therapies. We encourage participants, their families and carers to talk to providers about the ways they can use the supports within their current plan. It’s important all supports and services are essential and follow the current Stage 3 and 4 restrictions in place in Victoria. Many providers have been using tele practice and telehealth to deliver supports. These can be in real time, or it can be over a period of time using: Videoconferencing Emails Text messages, including sending photos and videos Phone calls Group chats online. https://www.ndis.gov.au/coronavirus/information-packs
