22.01.2022 Severe Thunderstorm Warning for DAMAGING WINDS, LARGE HAILSTONES and HEAVY RAINFALL For people in parts of Hunter, Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Pla...ins and Central West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts. Issued at 8:09 pm Monday, 21 September 2020. Plan Image A cold front is sweeping across inland NSW today, bringing strong and fast-moving storms. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Orange, Moree, Narrabri and Dubbo. Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Upper Western district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED. A wind gust of 96 km/h was reported at Cobar weather Station at around 3pm Large hail has been reported near Wagga Wagga as storms moved through. 25mm was reported in 30 mins at Carabost to 3pm. 26mm was reported in 15 mins at Forbes to 5pm. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. * After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 11:10 pm. If severe thunderstorms develop in Sydney Newcastle Wollongong or surrounding areas, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

01.01.2022 In the lead up to World Tsunami Awareness Day, our volunteers thought they would share some facts and tips with you surrounding tsunamis. The NSW SES is the combat agency for storms, floods and tsunamis. Due to their frequency, storms and floods make up a large part of our volunteer's training and assistance to the public. However, tsunamis do pose a threat to the NSW coastline and our volunteers are ready to respond if one occurs. The facts: - Australia has been affected by ...50 tsunamis in the past 200 years. - Generally, there are two tsunami risks that may impact Australia, marine threat and land inundation threat. - Marine Threat from tsunamis is most likely and common, affecting tides, rips and currents, as a result of this threat the NSW SES Swansea - Catherine Hill Bay Unit is working closely with Central Coast's Surf Living Saving Clubs this month to boost awareness. - Land inundation tsunamis threats are less likely but far more serious, potentially reaching the many suburbs on the Central Coast coastline. - In the case of a land inundation tsunami the best course of action is to evacuate to higher and/or further inland areas.
