25.01.2022 Due to the shortened WAFL Season the Swans PPOA were only able to hold one Pie and Chip Lunch in season 2020. It became the Combined Merv & Joan Hansen and Arthur Thornton Pie and Chip Lunch. The lunch was held on Saturday 5th September 2020 and held prior to the commencement of the League game between Swans and Perth. The lunch was well attended and enjoyed by all who came along to enjoy two hours of good company and a lot of fun - there were quite a few lucky winners in the... money wheel spins and raffle draws as well with many prizes on offer. Everyone who attended also received a ticket for the door prize. These are some of the photos taken to record this event - enjoy. If all goes well and WA is back to normal post Covid the Swans PPOA will go back to holding two Pie and Chip Lunch events that all Members and guests can attend.
23.01.2022 The WAFL Combined Past Players and Officials Association again held the Annual Bernie Hughes Xmas Lunch at the Leederville Sporting Club on Sunday 6th December ...2020, with over 50 guests from eight of the nine WAFL Clubs attending. Perth were the only Club that did not participate in 2020. The Lunch was formally opened by the Secretary of the WAFL Combined PPOA, John Komorowski who introduced special guests Taylor and Kallem, welcomed all guests and provided a brief outline off proceedings for the day. Special Guests were Taylor Hughes and her partner Kallem representing the Hughes Family in honour of Bernie Hughes for which the WAFL Combined Association have named an award after. This Award is known as the Bernie Hughes Award which was not presented in 2020 due to the shortened WAFL Season due to Covid19. For more on the Award go to http://www.waflcombinedppoa.com/bernie-hughes-award.html. Garry Underhill, President of the WAFL Combined PPOA also welcomed guests to the Lunch, and read out a list of Members, Past Players and Officials from the nine WAFL Clubs that passed away in 2020 followed by a minutes silence. Guest attending the Lunch were also given a ticket for the 'door' prize for a chance to win a $20 Coles Supermarket voucher which was donated by the Secretary. The winner of the Voucher was Joe Verteramo. Taylor Hughes was given the honour of drawing out the winning ticket number. Tickets were also sold for the opportunity for guests to win a fully authenticated signed Dockers Football (donated by the Fremantle Dockers) mounted on a ball stand that was donated by John Rowe. Kallem was given the honour of carrying out the ticket draw for the football with the winning ticket number drawn belonging to Vanessa Lucas. Lunch was commenced after the formalities with a buffet lunch followed by desert with a vegetarian menu also being made available. Food was plentiful with guests going back for seconds if they wished. All food was prepared and served by mine host Cris Dobel and his staff. It was a wonderful afternoon and excellent company with some friendly rivalry between East Perth and West Perth, all in good fun. I would like to thank everyone from the eight Clubs who attended, and in particularly Taylor and Kallem as representatives of the Hughes. Up to 50 Members attended this excellent function which provided everyone with an opportunity to catch up with friends and to unwind and enjoy the occasion. Norm and Vince again ran the money wheel spin which was a big hit with everyone that had the good fortune to win cash prizes. During the evening Norm was getting a litt...le worried that punters were going to break the bank. Everyone enjoyed the Supper that was served which consisted of assorted sandwiches, pizzas, chicken, party pies & sausage rolls, salads and savories. 18.01.2022 The Memorial Service for David Ernest Holmes (1938 - 2020) was held at the Swan Districts Football Club, Steel Blue Oval , Bassendean. Over 500 people attended to remember and celebrate the life and times of David. The service was conducted by the Reverend Stuart Fenner, Parish Priest of Midland. Reverend Fenner began the process of closure with David, commending him to God's keeping, to commit his body to cremation, and to comfort those who mourn in sympathy and love.... The Eulogy began with David's Son Andrew Holmes who spoke on behalf of the Family. Andrew spoke eloquently and gave the attendees a very comprehensive overview of his Father's life. A view that was very entertaining and was a joy to listen too considering the sad circumstances of David's passing. Following on from Andrew was former Australian and First Class Cricketer Kevin Gartrell who spoke on behalf of David's contribution to the Midland cricket community and the Midland-Guilford Cricket Club. Kevin also spoke eloquently on David's contribution to junior cricket and achievements over the years within the local cricket community. Kevin also gave an entertaining eulogy which helped to lift the spirits of all that attended this solemn occasion. David's Grandson's Kyle, Joel, Corey and Jesse also spoke on their love of their Grand Father and provided their thoughts and love of their favourite moments with their Grand Parents. It was wonderful to listen to four young men speak so articulately about their love of their Grand Father and the sadness that they felt on his passing. After a moment of reflection and a prayer for David, Jackie Lovelock was asked to read Ecclesiastes Chapter 3: 1-8. After Reverend Jenner read the Final Gestures of Farewell, Committal and Blessing, the coffin of David Ernest Holmes was lead out for a lap of honour around Steel Blue Oval where the final siren was sounded and a guard of honour formed to send David on his final departure. At the completion of the Memorial Service attendees were invited to refreshments and an opportunity to reflect, and to remember in fondness the Life and Times of David Ernest Holmes (28th September 1938 - 31st October 2020). 18.01.2022 Swans have a very good supporter base and as usual many braved the wintry conditions to travel to Fremantle Oval to watch Swans take on the Bulldogs - with no real hope of seeing an upset win to Swans. There were even some supporters who believed that Swans would be behind by 5 goals at the first break and go down by 10 goals. Some such as myself always live in hope and what transpired made the game a terrific contest which showed that Swans can take on the best and show thei...r supporters that they are on the right track for future success. Swans were inspired from the first bounce with some fantastic contested football that made Souths look flat footed. Play makers Jesse Turner (29 disposals) and Sam Fisher (27 disposals) were again leading from the front and providing opportunities for Swans forwards to penetrate their forward half of the ground. Cory Gault (18 disposals and 36 hit-outs) was again dominating the centre clearances and hit-outs against his opponents. His body work was exceptional with his coordinated attack on the ball was fantastic. George Hampson (22 disposals and 1 goal), Frank Anderson (17 disposals and 1 goal) and Matt Riggio (19 disposals) were also playing their part in keeping Swans in the contest. All this hard work saw Swans leading by 18 points at the first break. Souths bounced back in the second quarter to outscore Swans but still trailed by 6 points at the main break. Swans continued to hold the lead up until the 15 minute mark of the last quarter when Jacob Sideris kicked a freak goal over his head. An inspirational goal. The final quarter had both sides trading blows to exert an ascendancy and take control. However a fairy tale win for Swans was not to be. The Bulldogs seemed to have woken up from their slumber and proceeded to slam on a few extra goals in the dying stages of the last quarter to finally run out winners by 20 points. The final scoreboard flattered the Souths supporters considering Swans had been the better side all day. Denver Grainger-Barras (13 disposals) again showed why he has been talked about as a potential AFL draft prospect. Played with a great sense of maturity throughout the contest. Leigh Kohlmann kicked 3 goals to add to his season tally and Josh Cipro (16 disposals and 1 goal) played another serviceable game. Swans next game is at home against cellar dwellers Peel Thunder. I urge all Swans supporters to come down to Steel Blue Oval on Saturday to support the Mighty Black and Whites. Best Players for Swans - J. Turner, S. Fisher, C. Gault, D. Grainger-Barras, G. Hampson and Leigh Kohlmann Final Score - Swans 7.5 (47) defeated by South Fremantle 10.15 (67) Commentary and photos - John Komorowski
16.01.2022 Swans have finally broken through with their first win of the season. A win that came on the back of an ethos of hard work and team coordination. Swans Coach Adam Pickering was full of praise of the team's resolution to fire up for their supporters with a resounding win. This game was touted as the game of the cellar dwellers and that whoever lost this game would remain on the bottom of the ladder....Continue reading
15.01.2022 Matt Riggio (known by his fans as 'Rigs') picked a perfect day to celebrate by helping Swans finish the season on a winning note in his 200th WAFL League game for Swans. Even though Riggio only had 8 disposals and 2 marks he still proved that he still has the X factor through his inspirational leadership and the 3 important first half goals that he kicked to keep the Swans machine purring along. Also a special mention on Swans player Steve Payne who was chaired off East Frema...Continue reading
13.01.2022 Another heartbreaking lose to the Swans after showing so much promise last weekend in their win against Peel Thunder. Another final-quarter fade-out cost Swans again after producing a competitive output against East Perth for three quarters - only trailing by 3 points at the last change. Swans short kicking out of defense often let them down as the Royals pressure was able to nullify any chance of Swans getting the ball forward of centre. ... Sam Fisher (37 disposals and 7 tackles) was again hard at the ball, leading by example to ensure Swans were not out of the contest. Cory Gault ( 14 disposals, 23 hit-outs and 7 tackles) was again at the forefront of proceedings and showed why he is one of the in-form ruck-man in the WAFL. Down by 16 points at the main break, Swans were able to produce a commanding third quarter by dominating the clearances and scoreboard. Leigh Kohlmann managed two goals in succession and young utility player Nathan Ireland chipped in with another, giving Swans the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. The lead was short-lived when East Perth returned the favour to lead by 3 points at three-quarter time. Swans needed early goals to regain confidence and an opportunity to win the game. Swans were often pressing forward but coming undone through the Royals defense and attack. No matter how much Swans tried, they were unable to find a passage through to their goals. The Royals banged on 5 unanswered goals in the last term to completely dominate forward proceedings. The final margin was 35 points to the Royals with Swans unable to add to the scoreboard after three-quarter time. Frank Anderson (18 disposals and 9 tackles), Steven Payne (14 disposals) and Tony Notte (14 disposals and 4 tackles) also played serviceable games. Swans last home game will be played on Saturday 5th September commencing at 3.05 pm against Perth Demons. All game stats at https://www.wafl.com.au//league-east-perth-v-swan-district Best Players - S. Fisher, C. Gault, F. Anderson, T. Notte and S. 12.01.2022 Video of the Swans PPOA Annual Xmas Wind-Up held at the Swan Districts Football Club on Friday evening, 11th December 2020. Great night enjoyed by all that attended, particularly all the prize winners who picked up some cash prizes in the money wheelspin and prizes in the raffle draws. There was one major winner for the Xmas Basket Hamper. There was plenty of food and refreshments available for everyone to partake in.... Merry Xmas to all who attended and look forward to seeing everyone back at the Club in 2021.
11.01.2022 The Club held their Annual Club Volunteers Sundowner/barbecue on Thursday 10th December 20209, and was held in the Club Members downstairs bar and game day viewing deck. The Sundowner was well attended by Club Members who had volunteered their time during the season providing invaluable support to the Club. Both Des Hardiman, Club Director and Ross Leipold, Club Operations Manager did the honours with the barbecue and preparing all food.... Former Club Captain and premiership player Tallen Ames was also present. Even in his retirement Tallen remains a great servant, volunteer and supporter of the Club. Club President, Peter Hodyl did the honour of opening proceedings by serving out the first drinks. Peter also spoke to the volunteers present and thanked everyone for their support and loyalty in what was a trying and sometimes frustrating season due to Covid19. In finishing Peter wished everyone a Merry Xmas and hoped to see everyone back for the 2021 season in support of this great Club. I personally believe the Club President Peter Hodyl and Club CEO Jeff Dennis have got the Club moving in the right direction both on and off the ground. Both are excellent administrator's with loyalties to both the Club and it's volunteers. It was a great evening for everyone to catch up for an opportunity to wind down the season and discuss the prospects of the League team in 2021 - which by the way was all positive. 06.01.2022 When Matt 'Rigs' Riggio arrived at Bassendean Oval on Saturday he was very confident that his 200th milestone WAFL game (199 for Swans and 1 for Peel Thunder) was going to be a winner - and didn't the team show it by defeating finals contender Perth by 27 points. On his important day, 'Rigs' as the Club co-captain showed what an outstanding servant of the game he has been. 01.01.2022 Sam Fisher the 2020 Sandover Medalist was introduced to the Swans Members on Thursday evening, 9th October 2020 at the Swan Districts Football Club. Sam was recruited by Swans in 2020 from the VFL Club Northern Blues and what an exceptional season he had in his first season for Swans. In a shortened season when only eight rounds of WAFL football were played Sam amassed the following stats - Kicks: 107, Handballs: 105, Marks: 24, Touches: 34, Frees For: 15, Frees Against: 10,... Goals: 1, Behinds: 3. Average disposals for the season 26.5 and average marks for season 3. Congratulations to Sam Fisher on winning the 2020 Sandover Medal. He was a worthy winner against very good opponents from the other 8 League sides. Sam now becomes the 10th Swans Player to have won a Sandover Medal since it's inception in 1921. Also introduced to the Members on the night was the indominable 2003 Sandover Medalist Shane Beros and the current League Coach for Swans, Adam Pickering.
