01.01.2022 2020 In Review What a year 2020 has been! We have had a lot of good times and some bad times so let’s dive right into it. It started off with a normal pre-season with fun times and a lot of preparation from umpires. Then suddenly, training just stopped. No one knew if footy was even going to return. Swans took this challenge on and kept the engagement of umpires by doing zoom calls every Wednesday night and doing vision work through Facebook. Then we saw some light at the e...nd of the tunnel when the government started lifting restrictions, and the footy commission decided to go ahead with an 11-round season. So, what the umpires had to do was get right back to it with a second pre-season, this was challenging but definitely worth it. Then round 1 come around and our umpires hit the field in style. Our very own AFL goal umpiring team hit some pretty significant milestones with Sam Hunter’s debut and Brett Roger umpiring his 150th game. It wasn’t just our AFL umping team achieving some milestone. These umpires hit a very significant milestone this year as well: Colin Gault 100 Games Cassidy Bodenham 100 Games Ben Boyce 100 Games Ryan Vallelonga 200 Games Glenn Tunstead 250 Games Connor Davies 100 Games Jared Fowler 200 Games Rhys Pottinger 250 Games Frazer Beazley 100 Games Oliver Cocliff 100 Games Peter Williams 900 Games Pete’s 900th game was an outstanding achievement for an individual and shows how much he loves coming to Swans Umpires ever week to umpire. With all this umpiring going on we decided to take a break from umpiring our self and watch some of our WAFL umpiring team at Steel Blue Oval. With even our umpires getting involved during the Integrated game. I think our umpires took a lot out of this day and will not forget it anytime soon. As umpires it’s hard sometimes being out in the middle every week, and when the clubs take the time to thank us for all the hard work that we put in it really touches our hearts. During umpire appreciation round, some of us even received chocolates or cupcakes or free sausage sizzles. We really appreciate it, and we thank you, the clubs, for all the hard work you do. Every season must come to an end, but first, there were Grand Finals and to all of the umpires that umpired a grand final over the last 2 weeks, great work! You deserved to be there even if it was your first year 7 Grand final or your 5th Year 10 Grand Final. Also, a huge congratulation to Lachie Fahey-Gilmour who also umpired in the WAFL Reserves Grand Final. This season has been a long one, and I’m sure that many of us are ready for a well-earned rest. See you all next season. #swansumpires #greenteam #2020inreview
