25.01.2022 As a sugarcane grower or crop water manager, it's hard to know what type of irrigation is best suited to your operations. Alejandra, our Technical Support Officer, explores this topic in our latest Insights piece, helping to explain the different types and benefits/drawbacks of common sugarcane irrigation techniques. https://www.swansystems.com.au/irrigation-australian-sugar/... #Sugarcane #IrrigationManagement #Agriculture
24.01.2022 Hint: it could look like 600+ Olympic-size swimming pools worth! Smart cities are those that make the most of limited resources: including water. How did SA Water use our software to help them identify over 30% of potential water savings in a recent trial project? The savings they saw, if extrapolated out across the entire Adelaide Metropolitan area, would equate to 1.7 gigalitres of saved water (680 Olympic-size swimming pools worth!).... View this excerpt of a recent technical paper How to Cool A City - Just Add Water, which showed the significant opportunity for governments and councils to optimise their water use. https://www.swansystems.com.au/30-water-savings-a-public-o/
23.01.2022 Its all about how to make the best of every drop of water and fertiliser that is applied, in an environmentally sustainable way. We were excited to be featured on international farming publication, Future Farming. Check out their article, which showcases how were helping farmers optimise their water and nutrient applications (many of whom are over-watering by up to 30%!). https://www.futurefarming.com//Elders-and-SWAN-partner-in/... #AgTech #AgriBusiness #AgriTech #SustainableFarming
23.01.2022 Last week we ran a poll asking what you thought the % over-irrigation was for farmers over compensating the water they're applying to crops. While this can vary (and some farmers under irrigate!), a figure that we've seen quite widely is 30%. This can be measured, managed and improved through the use of systems and a data-driven approach. This quote from our COO Ivor Gaylard was taken from a Future Farming article: https://www.futurefarming.com//Elders-and-SWAN-partner-in/
23.01.2022 Did you know that the nutrient module in SWAN allows you to factor in any water quality issues and take account of nutrients/contaminants that might be present in the water; as is often the case when using bore or recycled water? Were proud to be helping water managers make better, more data-informed decisions that drive real economic and environmental benefits. Whether youre irrigating a farm/park/open space or youre a water utilities manager, our software can be tailored to meet your water and nutrient application needs. 18.01.2022 This quote from our CEO Tim Hyde about the use of technology in the agriculture sector reflects the philosophy that is at the heart of our software. Our whole system is about getting rid of assumptions to enable water managers to make decisions from data; not to be overwhelmed by it. The founding team (consisting of Ivor Gaylard, Rod Campbell and Tim Hyde) come from ag backgrounds themselves, which has helped to drive their focus on making irrigation and nutrient management easier for the farmer - not more complex. #AgTech #AgTechAustralia #WaterManagement
18.01.2022 Water management is often thought of (and talked about) as a separate topic to that of environmental issues. However, how we withdraw and consume water can have significant 'ripple effects' on the surrounding natural environment, including ecosystems like the Great Barrier Reef. Our latest Insights article summarises some of these impacts, as well as how to mitigate them. https://www.swansystems.com.au/water-management-impacts-na/

15.01.2022 If you ask farmers what water is worth, they might say a livelihood. 14.01.2022 Are you a grower in the Wanneroo region? Mark this event in your diaries - it's set to be an informative discussion about local irrigation systems and design, as well as water management technologies. Considering that Perth has just recorded near record low winter rainfall, now more than ever water efficiency should be a key part of growers' operations. Thanks to Irrigation Australia, VegetablesWA, Perth NRM, City of Wanneroo, Department of Primary Industries and Regional D...evelopment - DPIRD, and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation for bringing this event to local growers! 14.01.2022 Getting irrigation right on leafy salad is critical. Too much water will cause fungal and bacterial disease issues and is wasteful of such a precious resource, while too little will negatively affect both yield and quality. Water management on an operation the size of Harvest Farms is complex and time consuming. We’re pleased to have helped them to simplify and optimise their irrigation, enabling them to make forward-planning decisions based on multiple data points.
13.01.2022 An important element of precision agriculture is irrigation; and ensuring that pastures or crops are receiving the right amounts of water and nutrients (at the right time). SWAN Systems is your all-in-one water & nutrient management solution that helps take the guesswork out of irrigation. 13.01.2022 Last week we mentioned how SWANs nutrient module can be used to assist with applications of recycled water. You might be wondering how this can help to save money and time, whilst meeting environmental regulations? Take a look at how Adelaide High School used SWAN Systems to help them irrigate using treated waste water from the Glenelg-Adelaide Pipeline (GAP). Doing so required careful monitoring and management to make the most out of available resources, without causing d...etrimental issues such as run-off and leaching, which can be an issue when there are water and nutrient imbalances. SWAN helped not only to budget water, monitor and manage nutrients, and provide a plant health index, but it also assisted in the reporting of irrigation performance at the end of the season. 13.01.2022 "Not only can overwatering reduce the quality and/or yield of plants, but it literally has ‘ripple effects’ on nearby water sources and soil health." 12.01.2022 "Farmers were only growing at about half their productivity of what they potentially could be achieving... One of the biggest issues was the simple scheduling of their irrigation; they werent lining up the amount of water that was going out, that was being used by the plants, with the amount of water that they needed to put back into the system. By adjusting their scheduling (but not necessarily using more irrigation) they were able to double their productivity."... A great example of how technology such as SWAN Systems can be used to gather real data and insights; and transform it into real-world productivity gains (in this case, double productivity!). #SmartIrrigation #DairyFarming #DairyAustralia
