25.01.2022 Get to know our International Faculty ! Dr. Karen Brasel, Professor of Surgery, is the General Surgery Residency Program Director, Vice-Chair for Education and Assistant Dean for GME at Oregon Health and Science University. She is also a member of the Educational Scholars Collaborative. She received her BA from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and her MD from the University of Iowa. She completed her surgical residency and her Masters in Public Health at the Univer...sity of Minnesota in St. Paul and her Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She comes to OHSU from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), where she was given a dual appointment as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and as an Assistant Professor in the Health Policy Institute in 1999. At MCW, Dr. Brasel served as a Clerkship Director, member of the Curriculum and Evaluation Committee, Director of Resident Research, Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program for eight years, and as a member of the Society of Teaching Scholars. She is the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the Association of Surgical Educations Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006. Dr. Brasel is a nationally renowned leader in many aspects of surgery, including her role as Contributing Author and Sub-Committee Chair for the Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Program (SESAP) for many years and as the prior ACS Committee on Trauma ATLS Sub-Committee Chair and international director of ATLS . She served two years as Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the Association of Surgical Education and has served on several committees for the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, including currently chair of the Critical Care Committee and member of the Board of Managers. She has also served on the Executive Committee of the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors and is a Director of the American Board of Surgery. She currently leads the American Board of Surgerys pilot program on establishing Entrustable Professional Activities in General Surgery. Dr. Brasels clinical practice is trauma/critical care and emergency general surgery. Her research focuses on surgical palliative care, ethics, education, and quality of life after trauma. See more

08.01.2022 Meet our International Faculty Bio for Andre Campbell, MD, FACS, FACP, FCCM Dr. Campbell is currently Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. In addition, he is also an attending trauma surgeon at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Dr. Campbell attended Harvard University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1980. He attended medical school at the University of California, Sa...n Francisco and received his MD degree in 1985. His formal training was at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Campbell is fully trained in internal medicine, general surgery, and surgical critical care. He has been on the faculty at University of California, San Francisco based at San Francisco General Hospital for the past 23 years. His research and clinical interest has been the ICU care of trauma patients, acute lung injury after trauma, the abdominal compartment syndrome, and surgical education. Dr. Campbell is the one for most decorated surgical educators at UCSF. He has received numerous awards from medical school students at the School of Medicine. His educational accomplishments have been celebrated both locally at UCSF and nationally. He was recognized for his educational accomplishments as a founding member of the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. In addition, in 2003, he was appointed Endowed Chair of Surgical Education at University of California, San Francisco for two five year terms. He is in director of the third year medical student undergraduate education program all the UCSF hospitals. Dr. Campbell has directed the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco for 18 years and has trained many fellows who now practice trauma, surgical critical care and acute care surgery around the United States and the World. He has also served as Medical Director of the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at San Francisco General Hospital. He was selected to serve on the Verification Review Committee of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. In addition, he serves on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. He was given the honor of presenting The Last Lecture 2016 at UCSF by a majority of students from all five graduate programs. Dr. Campbell is a master surgeon, teacher, mentor, clinical researcher, and clinical educator in the department of surgery at UCSF. See more

02.01.2022 Get to know our International Faculty ! Adam Brooks is a Consultant Hepatobiliary & Major Trauma Surgeon. He has worked as a Consultant Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals, UK since 2005 following surgical training in the UK and fellowships in South Africa, Australia, Nottingham and America in HPB Surgery, Major Trauma and Critical Care which gave him both significant international healthcare knowledge and a depth of surgical experience. His elective practice specialis...es in surgery for liver, pancreas and gallbladder disease, specifically cancer, whilst his extensive emergency practice focuses on major trauma and the care of the severely injured patient. Adam runs a successful private surgical practice, medico-legal practice and international healthcare consultancy. He has appeared widely in the print, radio and television media discussing clinical practice, trauma care and issues around knife violence in the UK. Adam has been the Director of the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre based at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham since its initial inception in 2008 and opening in 2012. EMMTC is the largest major trauma centre in the UK, managing 2000 major trauma patients a year and has a National reputation for the excellent care that it delivers. Nationally, Adam chaired the NHS England Major Trauma Clinical Reference Group for 3 years and is currently the Midlands and East representative. In 2017 Adam was appointed National training program director for the major trauma training interface fellowship and was promoted to Chair in 2019.
01.01.2022 Meet our International Faculty John H. Armstrong, MD, FACS, FCCP, is a trauma surgeon, medical educator, and national health leader. He is Associate Professor of Surgery and Division Director, Trauma Network, at the University of South Florida (USF), Tampa; Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland; member of the US Defense Health Board Trauma and Injury Subcommittee; national member of the American College... of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma; and President of the Florida Chapter, ACS. He has led local, regional, and statewide trauma systems. Dr. Armstrong has served as Floridas Surgeon General and Secretary of Health; Chief Medical Officer at the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), Tampa, FL; and Trauma Medical Director at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He completed his career in the US Army Medical Corps at the rank of Colonel in 2005 while serving as Director, US Army Trauma Training Center, in association with the Ryder Trauma Center, Miami, FL. Dr. Armstrong is a graduate of Princeton University, the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and the US Army Command and General Staff College. He performed his surgical residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, his trauma/surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and his Master Educators in Medical Education Fellowship at the University of Florida. His research interests include trauma system development, mass casualty response, simulation-based skills training, and health policy. He believes that education and training are principal drivers of change. See more
