If away, am I prepared to break my momentum & stay exactly where I am at? The thing we don't like about the 'new year, new you' mentality is that people tend to have a go big or go home approach. Which means more often than not, by the end of January they've thrown the idea of the resolution out the window and decided it's too hard. ... Our advice is to make sure the goal you are setting is realistic for YOU. Just because your friends resolution is to run a half marathon this year doesn't mean yours should be. They might be 10 years deep into their fitness journey where you've only just started. When setting yourself a new years resolution make sure it's SMART. 14.01.2022 STACKING IT ON? Do you keep telling yourself, I want to start exercising, or I want to start making a smoothie for breakfast! But the next day comes and still no exercising or smoothie making? Part of aiding you in creating a habit that you would like to accomplish is what James Clear calls ‘Habit Stacking’... Often we decide what to do next by what we’ve just finished doing. For example, completing a gym session at Sweat Cave, reminds you to buy a coffee from @cavebrewcoffee which then reminds you that you need to drive home, when driving home your realise you need to get fuel, so you go and get fuel & so fourth. Each action becomes a cue that triggers the next behaviour So how can we use this behavioural Instinct to our advantage? Identify a habit that you do each day, and then STACK IT ON! For example, if you want to make exercising in the morning before work a habit. After I go to the toilet in the morning, I will immediately change into my workout clothes This is just the basis of the Habit Stacking idea, but something I believe you will also find helpful! Have a look at what you do from when you open your eyes in the morning, and what leads you to your next habit - find where you want to stack a habit.



12.01.2022 GUILTY OF GOING ALL IN? Then becoming so worn out, or overwhelmed that you just stop all together? Whether it is losing weight, or achieving any other goal - we tend to put pressure on ourselves to make drastic earth shattering improvement. We go ALL in.... We go from never exercising, to 6/7 days a week, we put pressure on ourselves to completely change our diet in the same week. Then the following week, we’ve burnt out! SO, how can we manage this better? Understand that success is a product of daily habits, not just one in a lifetime transformation. IT WILL TAKE TIME! If your starting out exercising at our studio, aim for 3 days out of 7 to start. If you want to improve your nutrition, start by keeping a good diary of your eating habits, review and find ways to make GRADUAL improvements! If you have take out 3 times a week, decrease it to 2 times and slowly over time, eliminate to once a fortnight, then once a month. If you don’t eat veggies, ADD them in to one meal a per day. If you have 4 beers after work, decrease it to 2 cold beers. You might not see results after exercising 3 times this week, or cutting down on your take out - but compound this over the next few months, or years you will realise the importance of good habits and the cost of bad ones. AND ITS OKAY When Caitlin first started we had to scale deadlifts right back to just a resistance band & we spent quality time adjusting her form ... Form there we progressed to light dumbbells Today when I glanced across the room she had comfortably picked up a 30kg Barbell & executed a Barbell Deadlift We are so proud of you and all our members who continuously strive for progression over perfection. 03.01.2022 WANTING MORE SELF CONTROL? In my belief, self-control is only a short-term strategy; not a long-term one. Have you ever given up a habit such as fast food, then all of a sudden your in an environment where your friends are all eating fast food, so even though you haven’t had it in 6/12 months you begin to crave it?... Or maybe you stopped drinking beer through the week & your house mate has started to leave cold beers in the fridge so you begin to have a couple after work on those warmer summer nights? You may be able to resist the temptation to demolish a cheese burger or neck a coldie once or twice, but if that is constantly in your environment; what do you believe will happen? Become a habit of driving through a fast food outlet whenever you pass one on the way home when you might be a little hungry? Maybe putting a few more beers in the fridge so one coldie turns to 4 midweek! Now, I’m definitely not shaming anyone who does these things, BUT if it’s not leading you to where you want to go, how can you change it? It’s good to make the habits we want to change & add obvious , but once you are aware of these habits you want to change, find a way to make them invisible. Drive a different way home so you are not consistently driving past fast food outlets, buy only the amount of beer you want to drink for the week or weekend. Reduce exposure. Don’t be hard on yourself if you lack the self-control. Optimise your environment.
