24.01.2022 A post for all of my UK followers! Next weekend in the UK the clocks go back. Pre-children this was that amazing time of year - an extra hour of blissful sleep, but things are never as straightforward once you have little ones, are they?! Our kids don’t generally get that memo and, instead, this will mean earlier mornings and no extra hour in bed. Check out my latest blog post for some helpful tips and tricks to help your child adjust:... www.sweetdreamsjellybean.com.au/daylight-savings-end/ See more

22.01.2022 Welcome to part 2 of my common sleep myths blog. The myth Id like to debunk today is Never wake a sleeping baby. . This is probably one of the most common phrases you will hear once you have a child. Before understanding so much about sleep, there is no way Id ever have believed that waking up a sleeping child could make sense! . Whilst it may seem counterintuitive, there are actually three situations in which I would recommend waking your sleeping child - if you have a s...leepy newborn, if your child is having too much daytime sleep or if your child is napping too late in the day. . To learn more, read my full blog post at: www.sweetdreamsjellybean.com.au/sleep-myths-2/ . . . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #neverwakeasleepingbaby #toomanynaps #naps #latenap #newborn . 21.01.2022 Here in Australia the start of Daylight Savings on October 4th means that our clocks go forwards and we will all lose an hour of sleep - boo! This change can be especially hard for our little ones, so check out my latest blog post for some helpful tips and tricks to help your child adjust: https://sweetdreamsjellybean.com.au/daylight-savings-start/

21.01.2022 Wrapping your little one up may make them look all snug and cosy, but is there more to swaddling? Yes, there absolutely is! . ADVANTAGES OF SWADDLING: Being tightly wrapped in a swaddle will trigger your babys internal calming reflex. This can make it easier and quicker to settle your baby off to sleep. .... You may have noticed that your baby will suddenly extend their arms out to the side, almost like they have been startled. Securing your babys arms in a swaddle will prevent this natural reflex, called the Moro reflex, from startling your baby awake. . Swaddling can calm your babys central nervous system, which makes it a great tool for soothing your baby if they are unsettled or crying. . Swaddling can help prevent your baby from accidentally scratching themselves in their sleep. . If your baby uses a dummy to sleep, swaddling can prevent their hands from accidentally knocking it out. . TYPES OF SWADDLE: There are many different types of swaddle, from the traditional muslin square to fitted wraps such as the 'Miracle Blanket', 'Woombie' or 'Ergopouch'. I recommend an arms-down swaddle for young babies, although arms-up swaddles such as the 'Love To Dream' range are also available. . My personal favourite is the 'Miracle Blanket'; a very well-designed, beautifully made cotton wrap. It is very easy to use; there are no zips, velcro or buttons, your baby is well-secured and snug and if you have a little Houdini who always seems to wriggle out of swaddles, it is a fantastic option. . IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER: When swaddling your little ones, please bear the following important points in mind: . To prevent any hip dysplasia issues, please ensure that your babys hips and legs are free to move within their swaddle. . Stop swaddling once your baby can roll onto their tummy or move around the cot. . Always sleep your swaddled baby on their back, alone, in their cot or bassinet. . The swaddle must be firm but not too tight, so that your baby can breathe normally . 20.01.2022 Sleep associations occur when your child learns to fall asleep with a certain item or behaviour. These associations can be so strong that your child may struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep without them. Helpful sleep associations are really fantastic and generally lead to long daytime naps, solid blocks of overnight sleep and ultimately sleeping through the night. Unhelpful sleep associations, on the other hand, can inhibit your childs ability to connect their sleep cyc...les together, leading to short daytime naps and frequent overnight wake-ups. Learn more about establishing helpful sleep associations (and avoiding unhelpful ones) by reading my latest blog post: www.sweetdreamsjellybean.com.au/sleep-associations/ . . . . . #sleepassociation #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean

20.01.2022 Were back into lockdown in Melbourne and I know many of us are finding things hard. If your child isnt sleeping well then everything becomes that little bit harder, so why not use this time at home to work on your little ones sleep? Contact me for a free chat about how I can help.

19.01.2022 Getting enough exercise is important for your little ones sleep. If you have noticed that your child has been taking longer to fall asleep or has been sleeping less since lockdown, lack of exercise could definitely be one of the reasons. . Planning some daily physical activity for your child can be fun for you too. Use the following ideas for inspiration: * Build an obstacle course around the house * Kick a ball around the garden... * Put some music on and do silly dancing * Play Simon Says * Set your child fun missions such as find 5 yellow things around the house or run to the kitchen, do 10 star jumps and run back * Dance to action songs such as the Hokey Cokey (Hokey Pokey for my Aussie clients!) or Shake My Sillies Out * Play chase or tag * Pretend to be different animals - slither like a snake, walk like an elephant or run like a cheetah! * Blow some bubbles and get your child to chase them * Play hide and seek . Id love to hear what your family has been doing to burn off energy during lockdown - please comment below :-) See more

17.01.2022 Over my next three posts I will try to debunk a few common sleep myths and explain the truth behind them. Lets start today with the first myth - Always nap your child in a light room. . This is something I hear all the time - that sleeping your child in broad daylight is essential to avoid them from getting day and night confused. . Whilst this is certainly true for little newborns, light can actually start to hinder your babys sleep once they get beyond a few weeks of age.... . If you find that your little one is struggling to nap during the day, waking up when the sun comes up in the morning or finding it hard to get to sleep in the early evening, then light can certainly be one of the reasons. Just the smallest amount of light coming through the curtains or even a bright night light can affect sleep and there is a biological reason why. . To understand more about why a dark environment is so important for your childs sleep, read my full blog post at: www.sweetdreamsjellybean.com.au/sleep-myths-1/ . . . #sleepassociation #dark #melatonin #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean . 15.01.2022 I speak to so many mums and dads who are just not coping because their little one isnt sleeping. . Sleep deprivation seems to almost be accepted as normal once you have a child, but I am here to tell you that this doesnt need to be the case. . I often hear people offer well-meaning advice such as its just a phase or they will grow out of it and, whilst that may be true for some families, for others sleep issues can go on for years.... . Thats years of feeling sleep-deprived. Years of not feeling like yourself. Years of getting up all night when your body should be resting. Years of having no energy. . Sadly, sometimes that means years of not being able to truly enjoy your child. Years of your child struggling because they are not getting the sleep they need. . Sometimes it means years of not being happy as a family - as a wife, as a husband, as a mum, as a dad or as a child. . Sometimes it means years of your job, your relationships and your personal life being severely impacted. . Im here to tell you that its OK to ask for help. Sleep is a biological need and without it, as humans, we struggle. . So many of us dont have families close by to help, or dont have the village of people around us that our mums, dads and grandparents may have had. . There is no need to put yourself through years of sleep deprivation. Being well-rested can bring so much happiness and energy back into your life, so contact me and we can chat about how I can help you. . . . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #sleepthroughthenight #tired See more

11.01.2022 Night Feeds . The number of overnight feeds your baby needs will gradually reduce over time. . Whilst nights may be different for each family (and each family may want to achieve different goals), heres a guideline of how many overnight feeds I recommend between 7pm and 7am, assuming that your baby is healthy and gaining an appropriate amount of weight:... . 0-12 weeks: feed on demand 3-6 months: 1 or 2 night feeds 6-9 months: 0 or 1 night feeds 10 months+: 0 night feeds . Many families are happy to offer more overnight feeds, which is totally fine, as long as you and your baby are happy! . If you are offering more feeds, just be careful to avoid excessive overnight feeding. When babies start to feed too much overnight, it can actually lead to even more overnight wake-ups. Ideally we want our babies to be getting nice consolidated, restorative chunks of sleep rather than their nights being too fragmented. . Excessive overnight feeding can also result in something we call reverse cycling. This is where babies start to consume more calories overnight than during the day. This often leads to daytime feeding issues, such as taking small feeds, appearing fussy or distracted when feeding or even refusing daytime feeds altogether. . Cutting unnecessary overnight feeds will often encourage babies to take better feeds during the day which will, in turn, help them to sleep better at night. . If you would like more information or need some help with dropping one or more of your babys night feeds, then please contact me for a free 15 minute chat. . . . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #sleepthroughthenight #nightfeeds See more

09.01.2022 Have you lowered your childs cot yet? . Many people dont realise that their cot may have two different base heights - a higher bassinet level and a lower level. . Whilst the bassinet level is great for our little newborns, it is important to drop the base of your cot once your child starts to become more mobile.... . As babies are practising their new skills - such as sitting or pulling themselves up on things - it can become quite easy for them to accidentally topple over the top of their cot bars. So to keep your little one nice and safe, drop that mattress down! . . . . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #sleepthroughthenight #tired #cot See more

09.01.2022 Check out this clever little man One of my latest clients - the gorgeous Harrison, just turned 7 months - successfully learned (in record time) how to find his own dummy and settle himself off to sleep without any help from mum or dad! Harrison went from waking every night, sometimes for hours on end, to sleeping through the night and self-settling like a champ at bedtime and for all of his daytime naps. He was such a little superstar!

06.01.2022 Welcome to part three of my common sleep myths series - Keeping your child awake makes them sleep better at night. . Many people think that keeping their child awake for longer during the day will make them sleep better at night. . Only last week one of my clients said to me ...but surely if my child is super-tired by bedtime, they will have a nice long sleep overnight?. Whilst this may seem logical, unfortunately it couldnt be much further from the truth.... . Up until your child drops their daytime nap, which is normally around 3 or 4 years old, they need regular daytime sleep to be able to sleep well, both day and night. . If your child does not get enough daytime sleep, they become overtired, which can make things really difficult for them (and you). It can lead to nap struggles, bedtime battles, frequent overnight wakings and very early morning wake-ups. . To read more about overtiredness and for guidelines on how much sleep your child should be getting read my latest blog at www.sweetdreamsjellybean.com.au/sleep-myths-3/ . . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #sleepthroughthenight See more

06.01.2022 You Tried Sleep Training but it Didnt Work. Why Not? I work with many families that have tried sleep training, but have given up because it hasnt worked. Below are my 4 top reasons that sleep training commonly fails - watch my video to learn more! 1) Sleep training isnt just about settling - you need to holistically analyse your childs sleep ... 2) Your settling method doesnt suit your child 3) You didnt have any contingency plans 4) You didnt remain consistent for a long enough time See more

06.01.2022 Overtiredness is one of the most common problems I see. If your child is displaying any (or all) of these signs, they may well be overtired. Comment below with your childs age and current sleep patterns and I will respond! :)

05.01.2022 Many parents long for the day that their child will sleep through the night. Check out my latest blog for six common reasons that your child may be struggling to do so: https://sweetdreamsjellybean.com.au/not-sleeping-through/

04.01.2022 If your little one is currently going through a developmental milestone - rolling, standing, walking or talking, for example - they may start to wake up overnight to practise their new skill. . These wake-ups generally occur between midnight and 4am and as long as your child is happy, there is no need to intervene. Just leave them to it and they will go back to sleep once theyre done practising! . .... . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #selfsettling #settlingmethod #sleeptraining #development #milestones See more

03.01.2022 For all of my Aussie and Kiwi followers x x x x

02.01.2022 Beyond the age of around 12 weeks, on-the-go sleeps, such as those in the front pack, car or pram, are a lot less restorative than motionless sleeps (i.e. sleeping in a cot or bed). . If your child has a lot of their naps on-the-go, they are unlikely to be getting into a deep sleep and this can often lead to an accumulation of overtiredness. . Overtiredness can have a real knock-on effect to your childs sleep, causing nap and bedtime battles, short naps, overnight waking... and early morning wake-ups. All of these things cause even more overtiredness and before you know it, you can get stuck in an overtired cycle that can be really hard to get out of. . To help avoid this, try to limit your on-the-go naps and aim to have at least one good nap a day at home, in your childs cot or bed, to get them the restorative sleep they need. . . . . . . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #overtired See more

01.01.2022 There is a common misconception that hiring a sleep consultant means your child will have to cry it out. . Whilst cry it out is one settling method, it is certainly not the only method you can use and, more importantly, it doesnt suit every child or every family. Deciding on a settling method that youre comfortable with - and that is right for your child and your situation - is one of the things that a good sleep consultant can help you with. . It is also important to r...emember that settling is often only one piece of the puzzle. A big part of my job is to look at all of the other factors that may be impacting your childs sleep (and there are plenty). Sometimes simply addressing these factors can solve your childs sleep issues, without the need to work on settling at all. . For those little ones who do need help with settling, it is still important to take a holistic approach. Without everything in place, you are likely to have limited (or even no) success with your settling, no matter which method you use. . To learn more about the range of settling methods I offer and the importance of an holistic approach, feel free to contact me, Id love to have a chat with you! . . . . . . . #sleep #babysleep #infantsleep #toddlersleep #sleepybaby #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #sleepcoach #sleepexpert #sweetdreamsjellybean #cryitout #selfsettling #settlingmethod #sleeptraining See more
