25.01.2022 Big cheers to our lovely honeymooners! There’s no better island in Western Australia to spend your honeymoon on, than Christmas Island.

25.01.2022 Oh chef, you are really spoiling our guests with your culinary delights! From freshly caught island wahoo and tuna and Island grown and foraged produce. Yum!

25.01.2022 Our guests were super stoked to see two turtles at Dolly Beach! These beauties would have laid their eggs ashore and missed the high tide to get them back out to sea. We did hear that they made it back out to sea later that day during the rising tide. Beautiful way to finish up 2020!

24.01.2022 Just in case you need another 7 reasons to visit Christmas Island...

23.01.2022 The blow holes were going off yesterday!!! Loving this video of our guest getting absolutely drenched by the fall out! Would you stand there?

23.01.2022 After spending days in the garage cutting, grinding and welding a back up set of crab-safe vehicle attachments ready for the impending crab migration season, you start getting a little creative! 2020 crab migration, bring it on! We are ready!

23.01.2022 Robber crabs are always quick to gate crash our picnics at Dolly Beach. They have evolved a highly sophisticated and sensitive olfactory system (sense of smell), similar to those of insects.

21.01.2022 Christmas Island has one of the worlds largest populations of brown boobies and with nesting happening year round, it’s likely you’ll be able to come and see Brown Booby eggs or chicks, any time you visit! There’s lots of activity at the moment

21.01.2022 The drive through the rainforest to Swell Lodge is not complete unless you have to stop and sweep crabs off the road!

19.01.2022 Come for a virtual snorkelling tour with our guide Nina! Don't be scared off by what you see 2min's into the film, they are friendly! Christmas Island is lucky to have 28 degree, clear ocean water, almost all year round!

19.01.2022 Swell Lodge Staff Christmas Party! Better late than never! Ironically our namesake Swell forced the repeated postponement of our Xmas cruise as the boat has been unable to dock at the wharf for the last month, but this arvo a few of our hardy team bit the bullet and drove to the other, sheltered side of the island and swam out to the boat, towing a kayak loaded with the essentials (including gourmet snacks by our amazing French chef Francois!) and partied for a few hrs (including spotting a Manta Ray!) Good times! Thank you to all our staff who've worked so hard to make Swell Lodge such a success despite the craziness of 2020! We couldn't have done it without each of you!

19.01.2022 Beautiful sunsets and beautiful feedback :) Feeds our heart & soul this festive season... as well as our chefs amazing culinary creations!

19.01.2022 Gather round, gather round! We've had some interstate cancellations today which has freed up some space on our otherwise sold-out peak season blocks! We now have availability at Swell Lodge for our Western Australia travel bubble guests on the following dates: Fri 27th Nov to Fri 4th Dec 2020 Fri 11th Dec to Tue 15th Dec 2020... We still have plenty of availability for January 2021 if you are looking for a non-crowded holiday destination! Email [email protected] for more information or to book!

18.01.2022 Not only does Christmas Island have a lot of environmental diversity, but also cultural diversity! This week our guests were invited to the community festivities of the Moon Cake Celebration. A spectacular display of lion dancing, drumming, dancing and singing!

17.01.2022 To celebrate the Christmas Island and West Australian travel bubble we’ve created this little teaser film! Please share this video far and wide and help us get the message out there! People who have been in Western Australia for 14+ days are able to travel to Christmas Island and back, without the need to quarantine. Virgin flies between Perth and Christmas Island every Tuesday and Friday. Staying at Swell Lodge is an all inclusive experience from the moment you get off the plane, including daily guided activities, all meals and drinks and a private French chef cooking three course dinners on your ocean front deck every evening. To book or for more information, please visit our website www.SwellLodge.com We do look forward to a time when we can open up to all of Australia and eventually internationally again!

17.01.2022 Wishing all the dads out there a delicious Father's day breakfast! May you devour it with the enthusiasm of a Christmas Island Goshawk devouring a Grasshopper! With only about 100 adult Goshawks in the rainforests of Christmas Island, it's the rarest of the islands endemic birds! We happened to see two of them yesterday while touring about with our guests!

16.01.2022 Pack your bags! Who wants to come and visit us and our neighbours Cocos Keeling Islands Visitor Centre after watching this ad?

16.01.2022 Super stunning day at the infinity rock pools! We love showing off some of the more secret, harder to get to locations to our guests! It would be so easy to walk straight past this if you didn’t have a guide showing you the way. We know so many more spots around the island like this as well. That’s why we include daily guided tours with every stay at Swell Lodge.

16.01.2022 With rain on the horizon this week, our crab sweepers are going to be getting a work out! The crab spawning is now predicted for 9th to 11th of December. After this all the females will be making their way back to jungle so still plenty to see from the 11th of December and amazingly we still have availability between the 11th and 18th of December due to a late cancellation.

14.01.2022 Our picnic lunch is done is style, with freshly caught island tuna wrapped in prosciutto with beetroot and sweet potato. Anyone else want to pop their order in?

14.01.2022 It doesn’t get much fresher than this. Our guests went out on a fishing charter in the morning, by the evening they were eating sashimi wahoo for their starter. Great catch!

14.01.2022 Owner of Swell Lodge, Chris Bray found this doomed juvenile Frigatebird yesterday, flailing around on the ground, unable to fly, fatally covered in sticky Pisonia seeds which kill a variety of seabirds this time of year. Determined to save it, he asked advice and took it home. His friend came over and they gently washed it with warm water and massaged in loads of hair conditioner, patently teasing out every single sticky seed covering its whole body. Several hours later aroun...d midnight they got the last seed out, rinsed then warmed and dried the shivering, exhausted bird carefully with a hair drier before leaving it to sleep in a box overnight, hoping it would survive. In the morning he cautiously opened the door and there it was - looking so much happier, soaking up some sun, beating the air with its wings and getting drier, warmer and ready to fly. A few hours later he took it to an open area, and, holding it up with its spectacularly shiny, clean feathers gleaming in the sun, launched it into the air. Such a good feeling. Thanks everyone for their help in saving this bird. Frigatebirds are one of the most spectacularly aerobatic birds on earth, true masters of the sky, the least-dense of any bird on earth and can fly for weeks without landing. For this little guy to miss out on a lifetime of aerial acrobatics would have been too heartbreaking. See more

14.01.2022 Picnic lunches done right! Locally grown, foraged and caught; Eggplant and green papaya salad, tuna tataki, kefir lime pot de creme and Brittany short crust. In our new bento boxes!

14.01.2022 Sunday picnic lunches done right! Duck with locally foraged breadfruit, ratatouille and a green salad all made with locally grown vegetables! Not to mention the lovely company and ocean views!

13.01.2022 This could be you, enjoying a drink at sunset, while your private chef prepares a three course meal for you on your private ocean front deck. You've had many adventurous activities during the day with your naturalist guide and it's now time to sit back and relax... Previously sold-out dates are now available at Swell Lodge on Christmas Island. We have one eco-chalet available from the 23rd to 26th of January 2021 and Virgin still has available flights from Perth.

13.01.2022 CHEAP (for Christmas Island) flight! A flight on Saturday 12th of December has just been released due to increased demand! Swell Lodge has availability from the 12th to the 18th of December 2020 and you'll see the famous red-crab migration. Guests from WA, NT, TAS, QLD & ACT are able to travel to Christmas Island without the need to quarantine. PM us for more information or to book!

12.01.2022 It's common to come accross turtle tracks on Dolly Beach, but rarely do we come accross a turtle! This voluptuous green turtle probably came ashore to lay eggs in the evening and missed the high tide needed to get back out to sea. She'll wait in the rock pools until the next high tide. The green turtle is one of the largest sea turtles and the only herbivore among the different species. Green turtles are in fact named for the greenish color of their cartilage and fat, not their shells. Like other sea turtles, they migrate long distances between feeding grounds and the beaches from where they hatched. Classified as endangered, green turtles are threatened by overharvesting of their eggs, hunting of adults, being caught in fishing gear and loss of nesting beach sites.

11.01.2022 Learn more about the National Park of Christmas Island! So unique and like nowhere else in the world! That magical spot 1 min 50 seconds in... it's only 2.5km from the lodge!

11.01.2022 Honeymoon, sunsets and Swell Lodge. The perfect combination! Our guests enjoying their bubbles, cheese platter, and freshly baked bread on arrival while waiting for our French chef to arrive and cook them a three course dinner on their private deck. Honeymooners or not, it’s the perfect indulgent eco holiday!

11.01.2022 Want to learn more about Christmas Island? Check out this ABC documentary that just hit iview, all about the indian ocean, featuring Christmas Island 42mins in.

10.01.2022 Turtle spotting at Dolly Beach this week with our very lucky #honeymoon guests! So lucky!

10.01.2022 My Octopus teacher! Have you been inspired by this film? We found our very own Octopus in the cove here on Christmas Island. Amazing intelligent creatures.

10.01.2022 You never know what you'll come accross when exploring the rock pools on Christmas Island. Comment below when you can see what we found...

10.01.2022 Our brown boobies are very active at the moment, often being seen flying at eye level past our oceanfront deck and perched on the edges of sea cliffs. They have little fear of humans, as there have been no native predators over the millenia. We love them!

09.01.2022 This will always be one of our favourite locations to take guests to during the daily-guided activities! The best part, having it all to ourselves! There are not many places left in the world where you can experience so much spectacular beauty and not have to share it with anyone else!

09.01.2022 The sunsets on Christmas Island just keep getting better. Tag a friend who you would want to share this seat with...

09.01.2022 They say that wonder and awe can lead to a happier life. There is plenty of both on Christmas Island. One activity that always leaves our guests awe struck is visiting the big strangler fig tree that’s hollow inside. Our guides look forward to showing you when you stay with us.

09.01.2022 We never get tired of a good sunset photo taken from the ocean front deck of Swell Lodge. Take me there! This shot was by our last guests Fran and Matt.

08.01.2022 It's getting pretty crowded on our beaches here on Christmas Island. Merrial Beach is about a 1.5km walk from the lodge, you might have to share it with a few (thousand) crabs, but it's the perfect spot to cool off after day of exploring Christmas Island.

08.01.2022 Did our Western Australian guests catch Christmas Island on Destination WA tonight? If you missed it, check out the video, featuring the beautiful cove where we take guests snorkelling and freediving with Dave. You can book a freediving course during your stay with us at Swell Lodge! Just send us a PM for more information.

07.01.2022 Mexican standoff! If the robber crab could speak, what do you think it would be saying? Thanks for the photo @missmillymd

07.01.2022 Take a moment out of your busy routine this December and get back to nature. We have one room available, sleeping 1 to 3 guests, between December 11th & 18th 2020. Guests from WA, ACT, NT, QLD & TAS are all welcome to travel to Christmas Island without the need to quarantine.

05.01.2022 Well it’s not hard to work out how these birds got their name. The red-footed Booby are the worlds smallest boobies (but still a large seabird with wingspan up to 1.4m.) They naively share nesting trees with frigatebirds who will sometimes eat young Red-footed Boobies and also steal food from adult boobies returning to the island with crops full of fish. There are about 12,000 resident pairs on Christmas Island and can be seen in trees near Ethel Beach.

05.01.2022 Straight out of the oven! Freshly made bread by our French chef, yum! What jam would you have on yours? We have jackfruit, mango and cardamom or coconut and banana or green papaya and vanilla. All made from locally grown and foraged fruits.

05.01.2022 Legend has it that a century ago, a dragon swam all the way from China before reaching Christmas Island. Lost and exhausted he hears the inhabitants speaking Chinese so tired to get ashore but was unable to swim past the waves and cliffs. Eventually he made his way into the grotto and now sits above the entrance to the cave and greets visitors with a roar of welcome! It’s a beautiful story for a beautiful cave swim, made all the more special in the afternoon light.

03.01.2022 Our last guest's review as posted on @Tripadvisor, where we are now #1 of speciality lodges on Christmas Island! "Don't know where to start..this lodge is magnificent. Its location is truly on the stupendous scale of impossible perched on the edge of a sea cliff overlooking the western part of the island. You gave one lodge next to you and then no one for about 15km...The sense of isolation and peace in a tropical paradise awaits you. Some things to note: its an eco lodge so ...there is solar power good enough for most things but no air con...you don't need it..its cooler than Perth and the breeze coming thru with the ceiling fan is enough to get you into island life. Compost toilets and rain water showers gives you the basic necessities without ruining the surrounding national park.Wifi is brilliant and fast. Think glam camping but permanent with tiled bathrooms ,sliding doors and zip down windows not to mention the magic balcony I call the flight deck as its the place to see all the Seabirds namely boobies and frigates fly right past at eye level or even feed their chick's right under you. The view of Egaria Point is breathtaking..This is the place to have a 3 course meal prepared by an incredible chef of great prowess Francois Morabito. Yes the French accent will dazzle you but more to the point his ability to forage the island for fruits, vegetables and fish to prepare your meals and lunches never ceases to amaze us.It was a culinary journey to behold from Asian flavours to Malay to Japanese to island treats it all was magical. No drawbacks but be prepared it is the national park so wildlife is everywhere including mosquitoes, lots of red crabs and others, the crashing sound of surf outside your balcony sends you to sleep very easily.. The activities laid on by Jess and Chris are amazing. In 7 days you will see the entire island from snorkel trips to hikes through the Dale's to pools and waterfalls, treks into caves such as Daniel Roux complete with caving gear(only available thru Swell Lodge), birding advice and locations, beaches, crab migration highlights including the best spawning location on the island , blowholes , cultural festivities on at the time like Chinese temple parties, visits to museums and shopping highlights... visitors to national Park centres such as bird rehabilitation and reptile conservation and even astronomy advice...Seeing the Geminids meteor shower and the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn were truly amazing from the flight deck..Just some of what is on offer on the island or you can just chill in the atmosphere....its pretty surreal...

01.01.2022 It's no secret that flying to Christmas Island is expensive! Even more so than usual at the moment due to the high demand of visitors! The good news, Virgin have just released some direct Sunday flights from Perth to Christmas Island. Allowing guests to arrive on a Sunday, stay 5 nights and depart on a Friday, both direct flights.
