24.01.2022 1.7M CROCODILE CAPTURED IN PETER FAUST DAM The Department of Environment and Science (DES) is investigating after a fisherman captured a 1.7m estuarine crocodil...e from Peter Faust Dam at Proserpine and took it home. DES believes that on 17 October 2020, the man was night-fishing in a boat on the dam when he saw what he thought was a crocodile’s eye shine and moved his boat closer. After confirming the presence of a crocodile, he captured and restrained the animal and took it home. He later called DES so that a wildlife officer could retrieve the crocodile. DES wildlife officers collected the crocodile from the man and placed it in a zoo. While not seeking to encourage the capture of crocodiles many Whitsunday locals are glad the fisherman concocted such a "North Queensland" answer to continuing rumours regarding the presence of a croc in Proserpine (Peter Faust) Dam. The DES has, however, reminded the public that they should not harass or interfere with crocodiles, and that they run the risk of serious injuries if they approach, disturb or seek to interact with estuarine crocodiles of any size. In addition, it is an offence under Section 88 of the Nature Conservation Act 1992 to deliberately interfere with, harm or kill an estuarine crocodile with a maximum penalty of $30,026. Members of the public are encouraged to report crocodile sightings as soon as possible, by calling 1300 130 372. DES investigates all reports it receives. Crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan. #whitsundaynews #everythingwhitsundays See more

18.01.2022 Lake Macdonald Dam is now spilling excess water due to heavy rain. If you’re downstream of the dam, stay away from potential hazards such as fast flowing or deep water near waterways and floodplains. These hazards could threaten the safety of you and your property. 17.01.2022 Over the last three years 197 fish-attracting structures have been installed in Kinchant Dam, in a joint venture between council and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. Recent electrofishing surveys have revealed a staggering three-fold increase in barramundi numbers at the 36 sites where structures have been installed in the dam. https://bit.ly/2QtYJly Photo credit: A Norris

16.01.2022 At very short notice we had an offer to buy 5000 Barra in a joint venture between MAFSA and Mackay Regional Council. We had to agree to buy on the spot and the... fish were delivered that day so we did not have time to organise everyone. 2 boats were used at Balnagowan and 3500 were released there and 1500 were taken in our transport tank and released from the bank at Platypus Beach and in Cattle creek. The fish were around 110-120mm long and all swam off very lively. Great to see and thanks to the 6 members who attended at such short notice.

04.01.2022 With school holidays coming up, why not treat your family to a trip to one of our Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dams! Just make sure you have purchased a SIPS permit if you’re line fishing https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/rsa/sips-dams-and-weirs Funding from the scheme helps community groups stock dams with species like barramundi and Australian bass for everyone to enjoy. Penalties apply for line fishing at a SIPS dam or weir without a permit.
