25.01.2022 5. Follow up late payments immediately If you dont have the time to do this yourself, pay someone to do it for you. It will be the best money youve ever spent. If people know that theyll be getting a phone call or email from you if theyve not paid on time, they will make sure youre always the first to get paid. If youre known to be someone who is very lax in that regard, the opposite will happen. To read more tips on how to invoice smarter for better cash flow visit: https://i.swish.design/cashflow

25.01.2022 8. Be very clear about your payment terms For all of the situations above, if youve been very upfront with the client or person engaging your services as to how and when you require payment, then you will never have any problems getting paid on time. So have very firm payment terms, communicate these clearly to people prior to every job they do with you and then, as I mentioned in point six above, ensure you stick to them. 24.01.2022 8 great nutrition tips for a maximum energy work day 3. Always take a lunch break By this I mean get away from your desk at lunchtime. While we all tend to eat lunch, too many of us eat it at our desksone hand holding a sandwich while the other taps away on the keyboard.... Thats not great for our energy levels later in the day. Its really important to move away from your desk and try to eat your lunch in a mindful fashion. All you need is ten minutes to give your brain a rest and ensure it picks up on the fact youve actually eaten. Believe me, youll get those ten minutes back many times over in the afternoon. 24.01.2022 So, its June, tax time is just around the corner, and youre in the enviable position of having made too much money and youre looking for something to spend it on before the end of financial year. Or maybe youre a not-for-profit who has surplus funds. While wed never advocate spending money simply for the sake of spending it, there are certainly things worth investing in that will have a positive impact on your business down the track. We would like to share 9 ideas... 1.... Team building If youre a business owner, you know how valuable it is to have good people working for you. Its important to show them you appreciate them, and its also useful to get them out of the office to have some fun. Team building activities are a great way to do this and gone are the days of boring seminars and lame trust exercises. Today most team building companies offer outdoor events and adventure-type activities. If youre in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, I highly recommend my friend Cates business Team Bonding. If youre in Perth, talk to another of my friends, Malini Parker, about running her amazing one-day painting for beginners workshop for you. Check in with your accountant first. 23.01.2022 6. Dont hold credit for clients Just dont. If the job youre doing involves you having to pay another supplier, then the client must pay for that job up front or at least pay a deposit that covers the suppliers cost. (For example, if we do a print job for a client, we get payment up front. Its too stressful to find ourselves in a situation where weve paid our printer for a given job, but then had to spend months chasing a client to get the payment that covers both our time and the suppliers printing cost.) 21.01.2022 8 great nutrition tips for a maximum energy work day 4. Dont buy your lunch from the lunch bar Im not saying there arent any healthy options at that lunch bar. There probably are. But when youre faced with the choice between delicious hot chips and a healthy salad, the hot chips will generally win out. Then youll spend so much time berating yourself for your lack of willpower over those chips that youll struggle to get all your work done in the afternoon.... 19.01.2022 8 great nutrition tips for a maximum energy work day 6. Stop eating from packets If youre eating something from a packet, theres a good chance it contains added sugar, preservatives and half a dozen ingredients you cant even pronounce.... None of these are good for your health. They adversely affect the way your body functions, and anything that does that will affect your energy levels too. So try and eat food youve made from scratch as much as possible. And for those times when it isnt possible, stick to packet foods that: Have less than 5% sugar Dont contain preservatives Have a minimal number of ingredients Dont contain ingredients with numbers, or names you cant pron To read more about the 8 nutrition tips visit: https://i.swish.design/energyworkday

18.01.2022 1. Invoice a job as soon as it is finished If you are a tradie doing jobs on site, you shouldnt have to go back to the office to send an invoice, you should be able to generate an email invoice right there and then. If youre at your desk providing a service-based business like design, copywriting, videography etc, you should have a job tracking/time tracking system like Harvest or Time Doctor that can tell you exactly how many hours are to be charged out the second a job is... finished. And then you should be using an accounting system like Xero or Freshbooks that allows you invoice quickly and easily, and also gives people a link to pay online. Freshbooks actually also does time tracking so for solo operators in particular, its a winner. To read more tips on how to invoice smarter for better cash flow visit: https://i.swish.design/cashflow

14.01.2022 7. Join a business mastermind Some of the biggest jumps weve made in our business lives have been thanks to the business mastermind groups were part of. There are lots of free groups out there but my experience has been that the paid groups are higher quality, and also the founder of the mastermind tends to be more active in them (which I think is important). The two Im part of Dan Norriss Mastermind Group and James Schramkos SuperFastBusiness. Both worth every penny Iv...e ever spent and then some. 13.01.2022 8. Buy that conference ticket As an introvert at the extreme end of the scale, I love nothing more than interacting with people from behind the safety of my laptop screen. And Ive managed to build some great relationships that way. But even I have to admit that the relationships Ive been able to build in real life by attending conferences in person are the best business relationships Ive made. So, if theres a conference you have your eye on attending, and youre umming an...d ahhing about it grab your ticket now. You wont regret it. 12.01.2022 3. Get deposits for large jobs Speaking of final payments if a job is large and might stretch out for a while, invoice 50% at the start and 50% on completion. This means if you spend three months doing 30-40 hours of work, youre not waiting for another month before youve actually got the payment for those hours. If a job is really really big, split the total into four payments and set clear milestones for when each of those payments will apply. 11.01.2022 8 great nutrition tips for a maximum energy work day 8. Time your caffeine hits for maximum effect If youve been a coffee drinker for any length of time, it probably has very little impact on your energy levels and mental alertness (unless youre particularly sensitive to caffeine). But with the right timing, even the most habitual coffee drinkers can get a caffeine boost. ... How do you time your caffeine hit right? By having it when your cortisol levels are at their lowest. So, rather than having a coffee first thing in the morning when your cortisol levels are naturally high, time it for mid-morning and mid-afternoon when theyve taken a dip. But limit yourself to just coffee or tea. Having a sugar-filled biscuit as well will cancel out the energy boosting effect of your well-timed coffee break. 11.01.2022 7. Have the same terms for everyone While this isn’t practical all the time, 99% of the time it is. Don’t make life hard for yourself by making exceptions left, right and centre. I can say from experience that every time we’ve made a website live before getting final payment, or ordered and paid for something from a printer without getting a deposit from a client those are always the times where we’ve been left carrying the can. While it’d be nice to think we’re great judges of character and know who we can bend the rules for and who we can’t, take it from me we don’t! 11.01.2022 2. Shorten your payment terms If youre a service based business like us, seven day payment terms is more than reasonable in this day and age. 30 day payment terms is a hangover from back in the day where businesses paid by cheque and it was more efficient to do a cheque run once a fortnight or month. These days with electronic payments, there is no good reason for 30 day terms unless you are dealing with huge companies or government departments that have very set-in-stone pa...yment policies. Where possible, get final payment as soon as a job is completed. Say youre a plumber whos just fixed a leaking toilet for someone there are tools available these days that allow you to both generate an invoice and take payment by credit card there on the spot. If, like us, youre providing a client with files, or uploading a website live on completion of the job, get the final payment before you do either of those things. 11.01.2022 8 great nutrition tips for a maximum energy work day 7. Embrace good fats Ah, fat. The mortal enemy for as long as Ive been alive. Thankfully, most of us have now caught on to the fact that its not fat thats making us fat. Its our penchant for packaged and processed foods that are high in sugar and other weird things (such as those ingredients with numbers and names we cant pronounce).... So, why should you embrace good fats? Well, one of their many benefits is they make you feel fuller for longer and stop you running to the pantry every five minutes. How do you get more good fats into your diet? Eat full-fat dairy (milk, cheese, yoghurt, butter) rather than the low-fat alternatives. Add half an avocado and/or a handful of nuts to your salads. Make your own salad dressings from olive, macadamia or avocado oil rather than using commercial dressings. And add a tablespoon of coconut oil to your green smoothie. 10.01.2022 8 great nutrition tips for a maximum energy work day 5. Understand that its okay to feel hungry The ready availability of food in the modern world means its very easy for us to graze our way through the day. Which means that if youre anything like me youll head for the pantry or fridge at the first grumble of your stomach.... The problem is that the more food choices we have to make over the course of a day, the harder it is to make them all good ones. And another thing: if our stomachs spend all day processing food then guess what? Were going to feel sluggish and slow all day. So learn to understand the difference between being peckish and being hungry. If youre eating three truly nourishing meals a day (more on that in a second), any tummy rumblings outside your regular meal times are most likely peckishnesssomething that can be quickly banished with a big glass of water. 10.01.2022 5. Change your accounting software If youre currently using an account system thats not doing the job for you (for us, that was MYOB) and youd like to switch over to something that actually plays nicely with other programs (for us, that was Xero), the end of June is the ideal time to do this as it means youre starting the new financial year with the new software. We moved our other business over to Xero after the first quarter of a financial year had already finished, and... I cant tell you how much pain that caused. So, if youre going to move, do it now. 09.01.2022 9. Get a branding audit Yes, I know, this one is a bit self-serving. But it is our blog post after all. We see so many businesses out there who are struggling to get noticed by the right kind of client, and its almost always because theyre not sure what their brand is. This makes all their marketing efforts weak because it lacks a coherent and unified message. If it feels like the right kind of client is continually passing by your business, it might be time for a brand... audit. Click here: https://i.swish.design/brand to find out what that entails. 08.01.2022 How long have you been in business for? One year? Three? Ten? No matter how long youve been at your particular business game, its important to spend a little time at the end of each year reflecting how you might be able to change things up over the coming 12 months. Planning for change, and executing it on your terms, definitely beats having it come at you from left field and being forced to do something youre not prepared for emotionally or financially.... So lets get ahead of things in 2019! Here are seven ways you can change the game for your business in 2019.

08.01.2022 4. If a job stalls, invoice for the work done to date | Even if youve taken a deposit for a job, if it stalls on the client side, and it seems like it will be stalled indefinitely (I consider a month of no action on a job to be stalled), let the client know that you will need to close the job and invoice them for unpaid hours. If you allow a job to stall indefinitely, and if you allow unpaid hours of work to sit there un-invoiced indefinitely, this is a form of holding cre...dit for your clients (see point 6 below). 05.01.2022 8 great nutrition tips for a maximum energy work day 2. Have a green smoothie for breakfast If theres one great thing you can do for both your health and your energy levels right now, its to stop having cereal for breakfast. Every breakfast cereal on the market (other than rolled oats and Weet-Bix) is loaded with sugar. And chances are you add sugar to rolled oats and Weet-Bix for taste anyway.... The other problem with cereal is its not designed to get you through to lunch. By 10:30am youre running out of energy, and need a snack/morning tea to keep you going. So much so, we all think needing a snack around 10:30am is normal. Enter the green smoothie. The beauty of these (when theyre made well) is that they tick so many boxes. Even the most basic recipes provide plenty of fluids and 1-2 serves of vegetables. If you add good-quality protein powder and some healthy fats, you have a more complete meal that can get you all the way to lunch. (Well, once you break the habit of heading to the biscuit jar at 10:30am every day.) What do you put in a green smoothie? Head to swishdesign.com.au/green for a helpful guide and free download. 05.01.2022 1. Start your day with two big glasses of water This might seem pretty random but it was part of a health challenge I once did, and it made such a difference to my life its now a habit. The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is head to the kitchen and have two really large glasses of water. Rather than trying to knock them back in one minute, I spend 10-15 minutes scrolling through Instagram or Facebook while I drink. Its a chilled way to start the day, and thos...e fluids seem to get my whole system going (in a good way). And even if I forget to drink any more water for the rest of the day (which can happen), those two big glasses really seem to go the distance.
