05.01.2022 Microchips - Up Dated Post Donna Morton I have been doing some research on Microchips for this coming season, both on the type of chip and price options around ...volume. We have been able to find a different type of chip, suitable for insertion into species that could enter the human food chain. This chip has been developed for use in Fish(Snapper) and should be a superior product to the glass chips we have been using to date. Further details on the difference of this Polymer Plastic chip are below in the words of the manufacturer Swissplusid: Biopolymer microchips were developed and trialled by SwissPlusiD in New Zealand for use in monitoring fish population in NZ waters. A special requirement was that it did not contain glass (the usual casing material used) when fish are involved in the food chain. Here are the main benefits of polymeric v bioglass microchips: Polymeric microchip casing material (plastic polymer) is attracted and adheres to surrounding tissue preventing migration. Bullet shape/blunt back end less chance of microchip being aspirated out the needle hole unlike bioglass microchips which are the same shape front and rear (like a grain of rice) and can work their way out of the needle hole when inserting Stronger more robust and able to withstand knocks and bangs which may be a problem with animals when inserted into a bony area like the tail web where muscle mass is negligible. If goats are processed for pet food consumption at the end of their lives, there is no glass finding its way into the food chain.
