23.01.2022 A proud moment in the firm today as we celebrate with one of our employees, Faith Thompson, who recently graduated from the University of Tasmania (including study at Kanagawa University in Japan) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Japanese and minor in Philosophy. With the usual graduation process at UTAS on hold, we thought it only fair we carry out our own ceremony for Faith, which was topped with a hug from her Mum Tracey who is another amazing SW employee!

18.01.2022 Can a Tasmanian in quarantine due to Covid-19 make a Will without any witnesses? Or by video recording? Whilst concerns and risks arising from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic are causing some to review and update their Wills, how to validly execute those Wills in circumstances involving social isolation, or (in some cases) quarantine requirements may be a particular challenge to them doing so in a way that is legally valid and effective. One of our succession law experts, Sam McCullough, recently published an article on this interesting and very topical issue, and you can read it here: https://www.simwolf.com.au/can-a-tasmanian-in-quarantine-d/

16.01.2022 Friday marked a significant occasion for the legal profession, with 47 new legal practitioners being admitted to practice (for watchers of American TV this equates to ‘being admitted to the bar’ or ‘passing the bar exam’!). 11.01.2022 Surrogacy in Tasmania Did you know that in Tasmania, the Surrogacy Act (2012) Tas allows a surrogate to carry a child for a couple in certain circumstances? This means that for some people who are unable to have children for various medical or science based reasons, there is an option for becoming a parent. We have advised in a number of surrogacy matters and drafted many Surrogacy Agreements since the legislation came into force and just recently had the pleasure of seekin...g a Parenting Order for the intended parents following the birth of the child. This means that after a very long journey & legal process, the intended parents will be registered on the birth certificate as the child’s parents, and will carry on parenting as they have since birth occurred. A piece of paper that means so very much. Being involved in a Surrogacy matter is such a rewarding area of law to advise in, and we wish the parents well with their new family. See more
