24.01.2022 I have just completed the Monash University 'Low FODMAP Diet for IBS' online training course for health professionals. If you are suffering irritable bowel syndrome (diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal bloating and pain, wind, reflux) then do yourself a favour and get expert help, tailored to your individual needs. My knowledge is now up to date and I have over 15 years experience in this area.... Clinics start back on the 8th January 2019.
19.01.2022 More than ever before people are confused about food. They are completely unsure about what diet is ‘good for them’ or who to get this information from. I get it! There are so many conflicting ideas about what is good for us, what is bad for us, they keep changing their mind right? Enough to make you throw up your hands and say to yourself I’m just gonna eat whatever I want coz it’s all bad for me.... Is butter back? Do carbs make me fat? Bacon and eggs for breakfast is good for me right? What exactly is the truth? Who do I listen to? If this is your thoughts then the following podcast is for you (well for everyone really)! Hosted by Rich Roll interviewing Garth Davis MD this is an in depth exploration of all the questions that profoundly confuse the mainstream. Subjects I get asked about everyday, such as: the scientific truth behind low carb, high fat diets; the health implications of the ketosis lifestyle; the pitfalls of reductionist food science; the impact of politicized regulatory bodies and lobbyists on medicine; the nutritional benefits of a plant-based lifestyle; the relationship between meat intake and diabetes what’s the deal with gluten? (his opinion on this might surprise you); plant-based versus paleo; the relationship between saturated fat, dietary cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes; and of course the differences between animal and plant protein and the impact on muscle protein synthesis If you don’t listen to podcasts and don’t know how to download a podcast app, then get someone to help you and start listening. Alternatively you can copy the link below and place into your browser. It is nearly two hours long but may just be one of the most valuable two hours of your life! Excuse the first 5 minutes of advertising (Rich Roll is not for profit so relies somewhat on promoting so he can pay his bills!). Here are the details: Rich Roll Podcast 1st June 2015 (It is American so will show the date as 06/01/2015) or www.richroll.com//our-misplaced-obsession-with-protein-ga/
19.01.2022 It's a privilege to be teaching Exercise Nutrition at ECU Bunbury this semester. Teaching 'Evidence based' science to some great students!
18.01.2022 If you would like to read the full article about the 'Exercise Paradox' here is the link: https://exss.unc.edu//2018/09/Exercise-paradox-Pontzer-201
15.01.2022 As part of my daily work I deal with an increasing number of people with chronic lifestyle related disease. Our food chain is not what it used to be and it is causing illness at a scale never before seen. The following video is long, no where as long as fighting a cancer battle or coping with a child with autism so please, find a comfy spot on the couch and watch. Dr. Zach Bush, one of the most compelling medical minds working to improve human health today. This interview and what Dr. Bush shares about the science of health, disease, glyphosate, food allergies and healing the gut is truly fascinating. As one of the nations only triple board certified physicians, he knows his stuff!
14.01.2022 A sign of the times. The science is overwhelming. Improving your health and stamina, saving the environment and having compassion for all animals (not just your dog or your horse) can all be achieved with the same diet. By eating a plant based diet. Hours and hours of study and professional development have made it impossible for me to say anything different! The truth is the truth.
13.01.2022 Do you have type 2 diabetes? Been told to eat less carbs and more meat and eggs because they have no carbs in them? Evidence continues to mount in favour of a whole food plant based diet. This short video explains the science behind the thinking.
11.01.2022 A common belief in people with diabetes or those trying to lose weight is that carbohydrates are the bad guy. Science does not support this. If you are eating meat and eggs in place of whole grains and plant based carbs then watch the following video.
07.01.2022 Really enjoyed being a part of the Ladies Day Out in Eaton on Saturday run by the Dardanup Shire. Over 500 people attended.
07.01.2022 Eat loads of meat? follow a high protein diet rich in eggs, bacon and chicken? You might want to rethink your diet. More and more good quality research is finding that a diet rich in animal protein is making us sick and old before our time. Happy reading
06.01.2022 Alzheimer's disease is currently the most common type of dementia which now affects 10% of Australians over the age of 65 and 20% over the age of 80 years. With these kinds of astonishing statistics it's highly likely that you know someone who has this debilitating disease. So it is no wonder we fall for outlandish and frankly false claims put forward by those with a vested interest in making money out of our desperation to help out loved ones! Today this brief video discusses what is 'scientifically known' (or not known) about coconut oil and the clams that it can cure Alzheimer's.
05.01.2022 There is a common misperception that fruit is "full of sugar" and should be avoided. This is certainly not evidence based and indeed the opposite is true. Read and enjoy, then go eat some fruit!
05.01.2022 Are you trying to lose weight? Do you think that exercise will help? Think again! Mounting evidence indicates that exercise does not cause you to burn more calories. Don’t believe me? Then believe anthropologist Herman Pontzer who recently published his findings prestigious Scientific American Journal. Herman and his colleagues spent a month living with the Tanzanian Hadza tribe who still practice the hunter gatherer lifestyle. Suffice to say the Hadza work physically hard e...very day. The ‘gold standard’ test of measuring daily energy expenditure (the doubly labelled water method) was employed and the results showed that Hadza men and women burned the same number of calories as men and women in America and Europe! For men this is 2,600 calories and for women 1,900 calories. This was not a shock. This study reiterated other similar studies in humans. Even those that measured the daily energy expenditure of wild primates compared to those of their captive brothers. Again, there was no difference. This points to weight gain being more gluttony than sloth! Weight is determined primarily by calories going in rather than those burned off. The old saying was right You can’t out run a poor diet! Please note: This is not a leave pass excusing you from exercising. Exercise has many well documented health benefits including improved heart and immune function, lower blood pressure, reduced blood glucose levels etc. Take home message: Exercise to stay healthy; focus on diet to change your weight. 04.01.2022 Convinced that coconut oil is good for you? This 15 minute episode by Michael Greger M.D. sheds the light on the truth. Michael is a brilliant man who provides free nutritional information. He is not-for-profit and sells nothing!
04.01.2022 I am seeing an increasing number of people who are wanting to go plant based (vegan). Good for you. The science is profound. People who don't eat animal meats and dairy are far healthier than those who do. Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and many cancers are simply avoided by going plant based. If you are wanting to reduce the amount of meat and dairy you eat or are ready to go completely plant based this book is highly recommended. Sometimes you just need a little help to take that first step. Of course I am also available for consultation at 30 Wittenoom St, Bunbury. It is always my pleasure to help you become the healthier version of yourself.
03.01.2022 Easing the symptoms of clients with debilitating Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS is a daily practice in my clinic. Dietitians already know it works due to excellent outcomes during quality clinical trials however here is a different perspective. Choice magazine!
03.01.2022 The problem in the world now is we have way too much information but not enough knowledge. This creates pseudo experts that say stuff with confidence and convin...ce the masses, thereby leading them astray. Jillian may be a great trainer but she knows nothing of nutritional science. Her main goal is weight loss but I have never seen her at any of our scientific meetings on weight loss. Her main complaint is that vegan women will have low iron but the Adventist Health study clearly shows vegans do not have more anemia. The third picture is of Charles Polliquin. He was truly one of the great experts on weight lifting. Like Jillian he thought having muscles meant health. He wrote scathingly on vegetarian diets. He died at 52 of heart disease. Jillian means well. She thinks she knows, but she really doesn’t. I’m not saying you have to be vegan. If you followed her advice of eating mainly plant based with a few eggs you would likely be healthy. BUT if you can’t stand the thought of eating an animal and want to be vegan you absolutely can have excellent, possibly superior health! See more
