24.01.2022 We can't say that swordsmanship is either for warfare or for sport. As far as warfare goes, the sword is obsolete, and for sport the sword is not a play thing. What we can say however is the sword is a way to be without self. Because the swordsman must overcome attachment to the outcome of using it. In this way, the sword is like zazen, and like using a brush.

13.01.2022 The sword is obsolete as a weapon of war, and even in the old days we would say, 'the swordsman should not be a butcher' meaning the swordsman should exercise control and compassion. So Zen and Swordsmanship have always been One. 'Zen Ken Itchi nyo'.

12.01.2022 It's often thought that Zen is about focussing on the present, but that is mistaken, since there is no present, as soon as you try to catch the present it is gone. When we realize this we realize the nature of being without self. For someone wanting to study Budo, the Martial Way, understanding this is the ultimate target. A target that cannot be touched.... So what good is the target that cannot be touched? Just draw your sword

12.01.2022 Asami visits Atago jinja, outside Kyoto. Atago is not a Buddhist temple, but a Shinto Shrine, it is also a place for Shugendo, a kind of marathon asceticism. The shrine is a 900 meter ascent by foot, that's a lot of stairs! Atago Gongen () a Shinto diety and protector from Fire, is a manifestation of the Buddhist Bodhisattva Jizo - yup it's complicated! One of Atago's most famous aspects is to do with the general Akechi Mitsuhide also known as Koret Hyga no Kami (), who assassinated his lord Oda Nobunaga in 1582, before he did it, constricted with whether it was ethical or not to do, so Akechi Mitsuhide visited Atago there Three times to purify himself and consult the diety there for a favourable sign from heaven.

09.01.2022 Kobudo begins and ends with courtesy and respect, even if the beginning is shaky.

08.01.2022 Sami visited Daisen-in sub temple of Daitokuji in Kyoto and our friend Ozeki Roshi there. Daisen-in was once the residence of Takuan Soho zenji while he was abbot of Daitokuji. Daitokuji is one of the important Head temples of Rinzai Zen. Daisen-in records that both famous swordsmen Yagyu Munenori and Miyamoto Musashi visited Takuan zenji frequently there to get his perspectives on Zen and swordsmanship.
