25.01.2022 This months weeding will be this Sunday 25th August at South Smoky. Meet at the beach access at 8.45. for a 9am start. If you arrive later and cant see any flouro yellow shirts text 0428 667 769 to find our location.

25.01.2022 South West Rocks Community Dune Care volunteers plan to weed public bushland to restore the native plants at Back Beach on Sunday 23rd August from 9am to 12pm. Meeting at footbridge at 8.45am. One of the keys to our success is the relentless follow up we do, said Ian Burnett. We were there two months ago and with recent rain its important for us to go back and remove seedlings of weeds like bitou bush, senna, ochna, asparagus ferns, lantana and brazilian nightshade. Our w...ork tips the balance in favour of the native plants like wattles, banksias and hibbertia, giving them room to thrive. Sadly, Covid-19 means we can only invite our existing volunteers as its difficult to train new volunteers with appropriate social distance. And we cant offer our usual lavish morning tea and BBQ lunch to share. Instead volunteers will need to bring their own morning tea and well stop work at 12noon.

23.01.2022 This month one of the worst invasive weeds that the volunteer environmental group has to tackle is showing its red flowers and green and black berries. Ochna also known as Mickey Mouse Plant spreads prolifically from the berries and crowds out local native plants in public bushland. The community group implores local residents to remove this plant from their gardens, if they have any. It might look pretty, said Alan Hill. But birds eat the berries from the ochna in peo...ple’s gardens, and even if they only fly one or two hundred metres before they poo it out, it gets into the bush and keeps spreading. We have to spend a lot of time getting it out of the natural environment. We estimate this plant alone costs tens of thousands of dollars in funding contractors to work on it in our local bushland, and hundreds of hours of our volunteer work to follow up on it. See more

22.01.2022 Our team of keen visiting volunteers are weeding bushland today in the park on the town side of Back Creek, off Buchanan Drive. Locals are welcome to join in anytime between 8.45am and 1pm. If you cant find us, phone Alan on 0419 012 640.

21.01.2022 This Sunday 25th October at Back Beach, some volunteers will be bagging the red and black ochna seed heads to stop the birds eating and spreading them further. Other volunteers will tackle bitou bush, lantana, senna and coastal morning glory. Meet at 8.45back creek bridge. Given the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, we can only invite our experienced volunteers as we can’t train new volunteers with appropriate social distance, said SWR Community Dune Care Secretary Alan Hill. And we can’t offer our usual home-baked morning tea and BBQ lunch to share. Instead volunteers will need to bring their own morning tea and we’ll stop work at 12 noon.

20.01.2022 What a spectacular day for a working bee around the ex fishermans hut site along front beach.

19.01.2022 On Sunday 28th July we will be tackling the noxious weed mother of millions in the area around the old fishermens hut, in the dunes about half way along front beach. This orange flowering succulent was introduced to Australia from Africa as a garden plant and its become a real pest, colonising huge areas and stifling native plants. Volunteers are asked to meet at the site of the old fishermens hut, half way along front beach, at 8.45am for a briefing. You can park at th...e footbridge opposite the old oil terminal site on Phillip Drive, walk over the footbridge to the beach, turn right and walk 150 metres. There will a sign on the beach marking the track in. Or there are a few car parking spaces on the north east side of German Bridge on Phillip Drive, but it is important to leave the gate and fire trail access clear. The site is about an 800m walk along the fire trail. Volunteers need to wear enclosed shoes or boots (not sandals), long pants, long sleeves, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and take water. Gloves, tools and training will be provided.

19.01.2022 A successful morning for South West Rocks Dune Care last month, working in another beautiful location, removing significant amounts of lantana, passion vine & cotton bush 121 hours worth of work between 29 (or maybe 30!) of us. A few years ago, those clearings around where we had base camp were covered with lantana and other weeds; its great to see how much progress weve made. It was also good to meet Neil Reckord, the new NPWS ranger and show him a bit of our work and ...let him sample some of the traditional culinary delights. Thanks as always to all involved in the catering department. We look forward see everyone for this months Bitou Bash!

16.01.2022 Changing Communities, Changing Lives

16.01.2022 Dune Care at South Smoky this morning. Beautiful day to be on the beach! 8.45 at beach access.

14.01.2022 Ochna also known as Mickey Mouse Plant - is one of the invasive weeds the environmental group will be targeting this Sunday at Back Creek below the SWRoxy cinema. Due to the warm conditions this months gathering will be short; 9am to 11 am followed with a rewarding morning tea. For those wishing to stay on we will have our AGM after morning tea.... Meet at the carpark near the picnic area. Volunteers will be bagging the red and black seed heads to stop the birds eating and spreading them, said SWR Community Dune Care secretary Alan Hill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoAhpnArKIw

14.01.2022 A low-key working bee for our existing volunteers only, this Sunday. With the Covid-19 restrictions slightly lifted, we are intending to do a low-key working bee, this Sunday 24th May at Back Beach. We will meet at Back Creek bridge at 9am and work on Back Beach. To ensure everyones viral safety and that we comply with NSW Government guidelines, we are making the following changes:... Work in groups of 10 or fewer, always maintaining appropriate distancing. Work time will be 9am to 12 noon. Well have morning tea around 11, but please bring all your own drink/flask/snacks, cups etc to avoid any sharing. We can shout conversations at each other from our appropriate distances! There will be no post-work lunch (very sadly). We will still provide all tools, poison, gloves etc, which will be Covid clean due to being unused for weeks (!) and will be cleaned after the working bee. When meeting at the carpark, collecting & depositing work tools etc, please stay aware of the need to maintain social distancing.

14.01.2022 Sadly our scheduled bitou bash volunteer working bee cant happen tomorrow (26th April) due to Covid 19 restrictions. Were still busy with contractors working on bushland around South West Rocks and Arakoon, so hopefully the invasive weeds wont have the upper hand by the time our enthusiastic volunteers get back to tackling them.

13.01.2022 Thank you to all volunteers. South West Rocks Community Dune Care have had to adapt to the Covid-19 restrictions. With working bees postponed for volunteers, they are finding other avenues to safely continue their important work of ridding South West Rocks public bushland of invasive weeds. Time to take a closer look into your garden or nearby bushland.... If you have more time for gardening at the moment, said SWR Community Dune Care secretary Alan Hill, removing plants like the yellow flowering senna with its bean pods, asparagus fern, and ochna (also known as mickey mouse plant) from your garden would be a huge help. These three weeds alone take up an enormous amount of volunteer and contactor hours on local public bushland. Birds spread the seeds from gardens and the weeds crowd out local native plants. (If you treat these plants in your garden, the seeds should go in the red rubbish bin, not the green organics bin).

12.01.2022 Looks like a sunny day for SWR Community Dune Cares bitou bash working bee at Gap Beach South. Were planning a shady spot sheltered from the wind, south of the bottom car park. If you can come along, meet at the end of the bitumen on Gap Beach Road at 8.30. The track in is 4WD only. Delicious morning tea and lunch provided.

11.01.2022 If you wish to be informed about future Arakoon National Park upgrades take a look at the link. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//macleay-coast-destinat

11.01.2022 Macleay Landcare is celebrating Landcare week at the Boyters Lane Bird Hide & Wetland in Jerseyville on Thursday 5th September from 9am - 12 noon. Volunteers are welcome to join in a weeding working bee from 9am. Morning tea at 11am plus a talk by Ron Kemsley from Kempsey Shire Council about the award winning wetland rehabilitation. Meet at the car park about 250m along Boyters Lane.

11.01.2022 Given the grey day for our working bee this morning, some of our volunteers may weed in the park on the town side of Back Creek, so we can dash for our cars if it rains. Hardier Dune Carers may head across the footbridge to weed on the dunes. But please don't feel obliged to come. If you do feel like it, please bring your own morning tea, and meet at the footbridge at 8.45am for a socially distant briefing.

09.01.2022 Are you up for a bit of whale watching while helping restore our wonderful bushland around South West Rocks? South West Rocks Community Dune Care invite volun...teers to join them at Smoky Cape Lighthouse BBQ area on Sunday 23rd June from 9am 1pm. With a delicious morning tea at 11am and BBQ & salad lunch at 1pm The group will be working on the slopes below the BBQ area at Smoky Cape Lighthouse. This area was once almost a monoculture of bitou bush, and the native plants have recovered well, said Alan Hill. But its time we followed up again to get any regrowth of bitou, lantana and other weeds underneath the banksia and wattles. There are other areas for the less energetic volunteers, such as weeding close to the flat BBQ area or gathering Mother of Millions on the path to the lighthouse. South West Rocks Community Dune Care welcomes new volunteers - first-timers, visitors and locals who may want to try bush care, with no obligation to join the group permanently. You dont need any experience, as training is provided. And who knows, you might even see a passing whale. If youd like to join in on Sunday 23rd June, volunteers need to wear enclosed shoes or boots (not sandals), long pants, long sleeves, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and take water. Gloves, tools and training will be provided. Volunteers are asked to meet at the BBQ area north of the Smoky Cape lighthouse car park at 8.45am for a briefing. For more information please see Facebook SWRcommunitydunecare, or phone Alan Hill on 0419 012 640.

08.01.2022 This Sunday 23rd up at Lighthouse car park. 8.45 for 9am start. See you there.

07.01.2022 If locals would like to join in, SWR Community Dune Care visiting volunteers are working this morning at the Bird Hide on Boyters Lane Jerseyville. Meet at 8.45am at car park, or join in anytime from 9am to 1pm. If you cant find us call Alan on 0419 012 640. This Kempsey Shire Council rehabilitation site on Spencers Creek is lovely.

06.01.2022 Our first bitou bash working bee for 2020 is scheduled for Sunday 26th April. Given the changing situation with the COVID 19 pandemic, well update closer to then. In the meantime, stay safe by keeping your social distance.

06.01.2022 Hopefully the showers will hold off this Sunday 26th for our working bee at Back Creek from 9 to 12. Work amongst the flowing wattle and spot the weeds to eradicate. Gather at footbridge at 8.45 am for a briefing using social distancing measures. Due to COVID 19 rulings we wont be providing our usual lunch. Please bring your morning tea, protective clothing. We have the sanitised tools.

05.01.2022 Visiting volunteer took this image. This is what this Sunday will bring!

03.01.2022 Our next Bitou Bash working bee is on Sunday 27th October from 8.45am to 1pm at South Smoky Beach. Since the recent rain there are more bitou seedlings popping up under the dead bitou bushes treated by contractors. Its great if we can get them all before our Summer break. As usual, morning tea and lunch are provided. Meet at the entrance to the 4WD beach access path at South Smokey Camp ground, which is off Lighthouse Road (on the right about 3km from Arakoon Road).

02.01.2022 Weeding at Boyters Lane Bird Hide from 9am today: We have 5 visiting volunteers in town who are keen to help SWR Community Dune Care tackle coastal morning glory and other invasive weeds. There may be a few showers, but we can shelter in between them. Local volunteers are welcome to join in. Meet at the car park 250m down Boyters Lane Jerseyville. Or phone Alan on 0419 012 640.

02.01.2022 SWR Community Dune Care volunteers are welcome to join in Macleay Landcares weeding morning tomorrow (Thursday 28th May) from 9-11am at Mannix Corner. This revegetation site is at the junction of Spencers Creek and the Macleay River in Jerseyville, opposite 2900 South West Rocks Road (a green weatherboard house with red roof). Parking is limited on the side of the road. Its a pretty messy site with heaps of potential; but right now it needs help to tackle morning glory, Br...azilian nightshade, senna, ochna and asparagus ferns among other weeds. There are some lovely rainforest trees which will relish the TLC. Sadly, given Covid 19 restrictions, Landcare cant provide morning tea after the working bee, so bring your own if youd like to. We will all need to maintain a safe social distance throughout the morning. Please bring your own gloves and tools if you have them; some will be available if you dont. Please RSVP to David Adams on 0419 296 321. (Text is best, and please include your name). See more

01.01.2022 With the forecast heavy rain today, South West Rocks Community Dune Care have cancelled our working bee at Back Creek. We got heaps of work done this past week with our energetic visiting volunteers from Newscastle University Student Environment Club (Nusec). Thanks to all the students for their hard work and enthusiasm, and to the locals who worked with them (with approriate social distance!). We notched up 385 hours weeding more than 8 hectares of public bushland. You may want to use the extra time this morning to give your feedback on Kempsey Shire Councils plans for the car park at Back Creek. Visit yoursay.macleay.nsw.gov.au/backcreek-upgrades.
