25.01.2022 Did you know that bushfires can create their own weather? Known as pyrocumulonimbus clouds, they're a thunderstorm that forms in the smoke plume of a fire. As ...the plume of hot, turbulent air and smoke rises high in the atmosphere, it broadens and cools causing cloud to form. If the atmosphere is unstable a thunderstorm can develop, potentially producing violent winds, thunder and lightning, which can ignite new fires. As we saw during the significant bushfires last summer, pyrocumulonimbus clouds can cause dangerous and unpredictable changes in fire behaviour making the fire more difficult and hazardous to fight. Find out more about pyrocumulonimbus clouds in our blog: http://ow.ly/wKtS50CA9nw

21.01.2022 DAMAGING WINDS, DAMAGING SURF - #MidNorthCoast, #Hunter, #Metropolitan, #Illawarra A deep low pressure system is centred over the central Tasman Sea. Th...is system will bring gusty winds to parts of the New South Wales coast today, and powerful seas to the coast both today and on Wednesday. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are likely over the coastal fringe of the Illawarra, Sydney Metropolitan, Hunter (including the Central Coast) and Mid North Coast districts today. Winds are expected to gradually ease during Wednesday. VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is possible from this afternoon for the coast between #Narooma (on the South Coast) and #SouthWestRocks (near Kempsey on the Mid North Coast). South and southeast facing parts of the coast are most at risk. Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. A Hazardous Surf Warning is also current along the entire New South Wales Coast. Surf conditions are expected to ease from Thursday. Locations which may be affected include #Sydney, #Newcastle, #Sydney, #Wollongong, #PortMacquarie, #TheEntrance, #Forster, #Kiama and #Moruya. A gust of 102 km/h was recorded at Bellambi at 7:28am. A gust of 89 km/h was recorded at Molineaux Point (Botany Bay) at 10:26am. A gust of 91 km/h was recorded at Newcastle Nobbys at 9:21am. 20.01.2022 Hi to the residents of South West Rocks the Brigade is always looking for new members to join us in protecting the community. 18.01.2022 A new online portal gives NSW residents the ability to quickly and easily notify fire services when they’re planning to use fire on their property. The NSW Rura...l Fire Service (NSW RFS) portal means residents can use their mobile phone or desktop computer to lodge their notifications about planned hazard reductions or burn offs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. NSW RFS Lower North Coast Zone Manager Superintendent Lachlann Ison said by using the new tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify, users can help prevent unnecessary emergency calls. As we approach the bush fire season, many landholders are taking the opportunity to burn off but it’s important they do it safely and let us and their neighbours know. Landholders need to make sure they’ve obtained any required permits and permissions, as well as notifying neighbours and fire authorities 24 hours before lighting up. This tool makes it easier to notify the NSW RFS before conducting your burn. If fire services know about it, it can help prevent unnecessary emergency calls and firefighters from being responded. By using the new tool, landholders will be notified of any Total Fire Bans and will be advised to not proceed with their burn. Superintendent Ison said while landholders are encouraged to reduce fuel loads on their property, it is imperative that it is done so safely and legally. Before lighting any fire you need to have adequately prepared fire breaks and have firefighting equipment on hand to ensure the fire does not escape. Every landholder has a responsibility to prevent fire spreading from their property and there can be serious consequences for people who light fires and leave them unattended, Superintendent Ison said. To notify of your intent to burn off, use the new online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify. Landholders can still notify the NSW RFS by contacting their local Fire Control Centre. 05.01.2022 Ever wondered how fast a grass fire can move? With the @Bureau of Meteorology predicting a warm and wet spring there is likely to be good grass and crop growth across NSW. With this growth will come the increased risk of grass fires. Maintain your property, be prepared and have a plan.
