02.01.2022 Leptospirosis has recently been reported in dogs in Sydney this last year with 5 cases diagnosed in the Surry Hills, Redfern and Darlinghurst suburbs in the l...ast 12 months. Below we have outlined the disease itself, and our current advice. No cases have been seen on the Northern beaches at this stage. A warning has been issued about the worrying outbreak of leptospirosis, which can be transferred from animals to humans. It is believed pets contracted the disease by drinking water contaminated with urine from infected rats and mice. Leptospirosis causes sudden fever, sore muscles, and lack of appetite, lethargy, blood in urine, diarrhoea and yellowing eyes. If left untreated, it can cause severe damage to a pet’s organs and become fatal. Vaccination against Leptospirosis is available and are reserved for dogs at high risk, such as those that spend time exposed to lakes, standing water, mud, soil, or rats. Currently we are not amending our routine vaccination protocol and will not be adding in leptospirosis vaccination. We plan to monitor the situation and keep you informed of any changes. We recommend caution with any sources of contaminated or dirty water. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call us on 9905 0505 .https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//f/Pages/leptospirosis.aspx
