20.01.2022 As restrictions continue to ease across Australia and the health numbers look reassuring, more employers are starting to look at what happens next, planning for a return to a new normal including workers returning back to the office instead of working remotely. Employers have been wondering if they can require employees to come back into work instead of working from home, or whether any return should be purely voluntary. Obviously employers need to consider the public health ...requirements in each work location and ensure they can comply with social distancing and hygiene requirements before having any employees in the workplace. Whether an employee can be directed to return to the workplace will depend on the individual circumstances including the role they perform, how they are performing that role from home, and any particular circumstances relevant to that worker. Employers who are wanting to plan for getting people back into the workplace should start having conversations with staff, letting them know what COVID-19 safe practices are in place, and discussing, at an individual level, what might work for the employee and employer.
