23.01.2022 Just a reminder there is no mass start line course tomorrow night. Should be lots of superb bush backing onto Forestville Oval. Pls pre-enter: https://eventor.orienteering.asn.au/Events/Show/10459

23.01.2022 IN AN IDLE MOMENT. AND BEFORE REACHING FOR THE EVENING'S APERITIF AND SLIPPERS. Under three weeks now, and thoughts turning to the bush tracks of West Pymble - and the balance of the recently familiar with the entirely unfamiliar. One of the pleasures of the Summer Series is the hint, the smell, the taste, the promise and the ponder of a bit of new material. And with Amanda and Hamish's season opener, we will get a dose. The new work across Yanko Road and the lure of the Lane... Cove River tempters, make a great mix with the quarry and flog we remember in closing season 28. Nobody amongst the SSS faithful will need any further prodding, but one aspect to draw your attention to, will be the 'non presentation' of last seasons awards at West Pymble. Those who should be standing on the podium, can still feel the love - by collecting their badges. Pork Pie has put them all in little envelopes. Discoverable by following a 'cone' trail perhaps. An ending at the beginning! Much going on behind the scenes to keep us safe and compliant, as we begin to push the reminders about buying a SSS ticket, joining a club, and the need to enter the Summer Series via eventor. But seriously, get the ticket. So much less hassle, and you'll save heaps. Rosscoe

23.01.2022 AS JAMES TAYLOR NOTED ON HIS RECENT CD LINER NOTES (A 15 YEAR GAP TO THAT PRIOR) - "BEEN A WHILE". And as Sydney Summer Series fans will also be noting, it's been a while for us too. But, despair not. The cogs, spindle, shafts, oil cups and SSS greasing points have all been on a quiet hum - and are about to hit the mainline with a very exciting steam powered Season 30 programme. Not only do we have new areas, we have some very very old areas - and in a true dips the lid to hi...story, an event back where we began. The excitement is building, and to add to all this, a new SSS branded web site will soon be awash on the shores of the Sydney cunning running population. In awe upon the shore you will all be. There is a bit of COVID amongst us, and that has been exercising minds when they would rather be looking at old maps. At this moment, we are very much hoping the regions are not a factor in our opening - and that we blast off at West Pymble where we were meant to end on October 7th. We are close. We are excited. 23.01.2022 SSS QUIZ GALLOPING TO THE LINE A reminder to all those quiz fanatics to get the map files out (and the memory bank out) as you scratch and sniff your way to immortality. The SSS 30th Anniversary Quiz is on the SSS web site, and awaits your attention. Surely everyone remembers 'The Horse', but how many recall the 'Mulberries'? No matter your recollections (partial or full), please get the pencil onto the A4 sheet, scratch out a few knowns, and maybe some unknowns, and hand them in before Balls Head. Thousands have already done so, and the tally staff are in a swoon of marking frenzy. And be careful of Dennis 'The Menace' Sparling on another rails run. The Den has form here! Rosscoe

22.01.2022 FULLY PROTECTED IN HIS BURGONET, THE GARINGAL CUIRASSIER GOADED US. PUSHED US. PUNISHED US. THE LANCE TIP AND URGE FULLY APPARENT IN THE PLAN. THE CLOCK APPARENT IN THE RESULTS. The Terrys Creek Joust once again laying low the plan in a huge and crowded night of late back records. I’m remembering a previous start from Jim Walsh that had this dubious claim, and the role the Bennelong knight (Sir Balaclava) played in it then. No excuses tonight with the relocated flag drops b...Continue reading

18.01.2022 FUNSTERS AND QUIZ ADDICTS - YOUR TIME IS NEARLY UP! As we head to our Wednesday Anniversary celebration at Waverton, the 'hanging chad' team are hard at work deliberating on the submissions. Thousands of them as I've said. Some good material coming across the arbiters desk, but not too late to lob in a bid. So far only one respondent has got my favourite "Dead End", but nobody anywhere near a clean sweep. Guess if you must (several have), but get the thinking cap on. The answ...ers to these funnies will be posted later in the week - along with the prize winners names. It could be you. It should be you!! Rosscoe

17.01.2022 LADIES & GENTLEMEN, PLEASE TAKE YOUR SEAT. Melbourne had its ill-fated Outer Circle Line (opened 1890/91, closed three years later in 1893), and few these days would have heard of it especially Sydneysiders. But after the first glance at tonight’s challenge in the Waratah’s and Vines, one must assume course planner Graeme Hill is amongst those few, for we see a perfect replica in the Telopea Outer Circle Line. Bravura course planning inspired by a railway! We expected the t...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Today's maps. Thanks to first-time setters Peter and Jack, thanks GO - well done to Glenn for clearing the course.

15.01.2022 QUIZ CHAMP! Unless I get more entries, tonight's leading contender will be declared the winner tomorrow at Balls Head - after a tight contest, with submissions from throughout the orienteering world. One small and delicious aspect of the win, will be their submission missed one of the controls that they had set! Nice.

12.01.2022 COULD THE REVEREND AWDRY HAVE CONCEIVED A MORE INTRIGUING LAYOUT? As everyone understands, Rev Wilbert knows a thing or two about layouts loops, straight tracks, dead end sidings, cross overs, steep climbs etc and was always big on points and signals. Red flags in particular. And while there were plenty of green signals and speedy locomotive work at the Ferritville layout tonight, the amber caution light was seen in the wide spread of big points, and there were many tales...Continue reading

12.01.2022 Seeing as a lot of people had trouble in the Bermuda Triangle of 13-3-24 on Wednesday, Gordon the setter has kindly provided an insert of the area from the Sprint map of Ferretville. You can see the complexity of the track network and the cliffs in greater detail. Even once you found the correct track into 13, you had to be patient as there were three bends before the control. Anyone attempting the short bush bash from east of 13 needed to be 100% certain which track they were on, and which bearing to take. Rule No.1 of SSS: always allow extra time in the bushy bits!

11.01.2022 Members can now buy a season ticket for the 30th Sydney Summer Series, starting at West Pymble on October 7. Get them for a 30% discount off full price here:

11.01.2022 THE SYDNEY SUMMER SERIES SWORD TAPS LIGHTLY UPON A FAVOURED SON'S SHOULDER, AND INTONES "ARISE SIR DAVID". Amidst the Summer Series good news (check the programme on eventor if in any doubt), how about even better news. And news in this context having a rather strange meaning - being five months late! As all punters, prodigals, pluggers, and potentate summer series champions will know, the winners and podium ponies from SSS Season 29 are known, honoured, revered, saluted and ...elevated - but are yet to clasp the badge. Gripped by the COVID clasp you might say. Plans are afoot to render unto these elites their due, and we expect to do so at West Pymble (sadly without trumpet fanfare or elevation to the stage), but a render none the less. But. Amidst the Open winners, the Legends, the Immortals, the Juniors, the Walkers, we have the elusive and very much sort after, 'SSS Special Award'. Generally a hush descends when we get to this one. So many worthies have gone before, such loyal service to the cause. Who gets the nod in Season 29 the question on everyones lips - that can now, a belated five months later, be announced. And the Season 29 SSS Special Award goes to: David Bowerman! As many know, David travels down from the Central Coast by public transport to every SSS event, and has done so for many many seasons. Often in a tortuous joining of train, bus, tram, bus, shank's etc (and then in reverse order). Loyalty beyond measure. David joins a special elite, and I'm sure all SSS fans will join me in offering hearty congratulations. Let's hope the zones relax by October 7th so David can continue to join us on the burst, on the fly, on the paddock and pitch, that is SSS in Season 30. Rosscoe

10.01.2022 Just a reminder for today's special 30th anniversary event: you must stick to tracks and roadsides in the Balls Head section (everywhere south of #29). North Sydney Council have granted us one-off access to this precious parcel of bushland on the strict proviso that we do NOT cross any white or green or pink hashed OOB areas. Today's maps are on Eventor so you can plan before you arrive. Free mini cupcake for each attendee - we have gluten-free as well, but sorry no vegetarian/vegan options. Weather forecast is perfect: a max of 25C with temps around 21C at 6pm.

10.01.2022 OUT OF BOUNDS - AGAIN! In an agony of reflection, and a welter of correspondence, it is worth reinforcing the point that the bush in all Sydney Summer Series maps should be seen as OOB - unless specially noted otherwise. This means bush areas mapped as white and any shade of green. And 'stay on tracks' means 'stay on tracks in the bush' - or perhaps more correctly 'stay on mapped tracks in the bush'.... Finally, the connection between OOB and event scores. Please be aware that runners going out-of-bounds (innocently or otherwise) will NOT be awarded event points. The Summer Series Code of Conduct worth a read.

10.01.2022 Covid regulations stipulate that everyone attending an event (participants + helpers + spectators) must supply name-address-email in case contact tracing is needed. In addition we strongly recommend members provide a mobile phone number and the phone number of an emergency contact. These should be entered in Eventor as part of your personal information. It has come to our attention that some season ticket holders have not yet provided a mobile phone number. Please do this ASAP. Thanks - and welcome to season 30!

10.01.2022 So excited - just one more sleep until season 30 starts. The maps and control descriptions are now up on Eventor for Week 1 at West Pymble. Please note the road crossing points and instructions re the bush areas. Not a member? Please register as a casual for free in Eventor to make everyone's life a lot easier. Limited number of EOD maps so pre-enter please. This event was held over from the end of last season - lots of bush trails!

09.01.2022 Tonight's maps. Thanks Graeme, thanks WHO.

08.01.2022 Here's something to brighten your mood on a filthy weather day: a 30th anniversary SSS quiz by old Father Time himself Ross Barr. Now that all our stats are online, it's too easy to go looking for answers about people and participation etc. So Ross has come up with something off-beat (some might say off track): 30 questions about unique control locations we have encountered since the first SSS creatures climbed out of the primordial swamp and onto land in November 1990. Winner(s) announced at the Waverton event on Nov 25. Enjoy: https://sydneysummerseries.com.au//Sydney%20Summer%20Serie

08.01.2022 Just a reminder that all participants are to go straight to the "Meeting Point" banner. From there you will be directed to the next point in the registration process. Season ticket holders do not need to pre-enter each week - organisers have a list and you will be ticked off as you arrive. Ross' map for week 2 looks great with loads of route choice options (your scribe is busy with hockey semi-finals).

08.01.2022 TREES LEVER INTO CONTENTION ON DAMP DAY Following days of rain, storms and surging seas, it is almost a miracle to report we ran in fine conditions tonight, and posted another 200 plus outing in the race that stops the nation! Whoo hoo Sydney, this is just so impressive. I’m seeing 199 on the main nibble (but wondering where Mounty is?), and a ‘Banjo’ on the MINI a challenging course that perhaps went outside the no-road guidelines, but none-the-less saw Ross ‘The Marshall’...Continue reading

07.01.2022 FROM THE DEPTHS OF WINTER, FROM THE BOSOM OF THE POET, THE PUNTER, THE PLAYWRIGHT...AND FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE 'O' GEAR BAG, COMES ANOTHER MAD SUMMER OF THE SYDNEY SUMMER SERIES! A week to go, and already the fearless and the famous are clutching their tickets and T Shirts in the run up to our season 30 opener at West Pymble. Suddenly it's close - sneaking up on us like the silent trolley bus at Dawsons Corner. But exciting though, and no doubt the fans are excited and ready ...for action. COVID safe action of course! I'm sure all will now realise that entry is best with the SSS Ticket (please buy!), or via Eventor before event day. This is the year to join an orienteering club in facilitating all this. Casual enter on the day will be available, but may be limited and slower through registration. Note that the free MINI courses will still need participant registration. Most will have now had a deck-o at the splendid new (and evolving) SSS web site. This brings our SSS 'brand' into the final straight - and a big thank-you to Wiz and the team at dirtyd before him. What a look, what a product! You'd be mad not to try it - once a week of course. Note the recent addition of our 'Code of Conduct' on the web site Home page. The key features here relate to fairness and out-of-bounds. Please read. Rosscoe

07.01.2022 THE REWARDS OF THE SUMMER SERIES Numbers are so excitingly strong in this 30th anniversary year, the SSS Mafia have decided to make a song and dance of our (looming) 500th competitor. Once he or she is identified within the multi column 'Miller Data Table', we have decided to reward them with a brand new SSS running top - value $6000, give or take a zero or two! Who will be the winner? What event will see the prize go off? Will John Coates present it?... Tell your friends to get in the queue. Runners have copped 'good behaviour bonds' to get one of these babies - a classic and rare treat in a season like no other. Rosscoe

06.01.2022 "THOSE WAITING ON THE PLATFORM FOR THE 'SEASON-30' SSS EXPRESS - PLEASE PREPARE TO BOARD" And who are the smarty-pants that already have their tickets waiting! ... Yes customers, passengers, punters and pole vaulters - the magnificent Sydney Summer Series is just four weeks away from the green flag, the whistle, the toot and the chuff. Those waiting patiently in the waiting room, that lonely six months by the fire (with only the slow tick tock and pendulum of the NSWGR clock for company), the long wait is almost over. The SSS train is coming. And for those hanging out to discover where they will be spending their summer coin, try our new SSS website - in glorious full colour and in a lather of linkages and interest. The full programme is there. Check it, post it, flick it to your mates, to the family, and even to your Uncle Bob. And then on to Eventor (with its 26 November 'event' date) with your readies to buy the Season 30 Ticket. Another 30% discount bargain. Please join us. Note that the web site is still subject to refinement and fiddle (and probably an 'official' launch), but is already looking just so good. Sydney Summer Series - Sydney Map Running. What a brand, what a baby! Rosscoe

05.01.2022 Tonight's Moonlight Madness map. Thanks Dave Stitt, thanks Garingal. SSS starts Wed Oct 7 at West Pymble - season tickets on sale now for members!

04.01.2022 Tonight's maps. Thanks Warwick, thanks GO, thanks ONSW for the cupcakes. Thanks everyone for 30 fantastic years.

03.01.2022 Garingal are putting on the last Moonlight Madness for 2020 on Wednesday at Putney. Start any time between 5.30-7pm. Same format as the SSS, so it's an ideal prep for season 30. You'll need a torch or headlamp. Pre-entry preferred.

02.01.2022 Tonight's maps. Thanks Gordon, thanks Bennelong.

01.01.2022 SSS#12 POSTPONED With the COVID developments today, Bennelong advise that the Georges Heights event will not be held next week - but we hope to run it on an alternate day early in the new year. Probably a Monday evening - subject to all factors returning to 'normal' of course. Running Georges Height's is such a treat, we'd prefer an alternate day to abandonment - especially given all permissions and plans are in place. 'The BB Gun' will have had a classic course in store, and we just have to wait a bit to get to grips with it. Worth it of course, no matter when!

01.01.2022 Tonight's maps. Thanks Amanda, Hamish and Big Foot.
