12.01.2022 Fairing the upper topsides before fitting the lower sponsons. I prefer planing Huon Pine to sanding, so I get the surface as fair as I can with the Number 3 pla...ne and then the torture boards just remove the plane marks. I even found this works best on the many epoxy bog hull surfaces I’ve faired. See more

10.01.2022 Carvel Planking Episode 9: Stringers and Clamps is now up on www.sydneywoodenboatschool.com.au VIDEOS Page and https://youtu.be/99VVJuz4lbs
10.01.2022 The upper sheer clamp is fastened off. Two layers of Celery Top Pine from Tasmania laminated with epoxy. I couldn't get 1 1/2" (38mm) stock so I did it in two layers of 3/4"(19mm). Even at 3/4" the laminates had to be steam-bent first.
09.01.2022 The 18-FOOTER BRITANNIA: 100 YEARS OF A SYDNEY ICON is now available. Tells the whole story of this legend of the flying eighteens and the people around her. In my research I turned up lots of images from private collections of family and crew members, most rarely seen before. Go direct to http://sydneywoodenboatschool.com.au//the-18-footer-britan or pickup off the shelf at BOAT BOOKS in Crows Nest, Sydney.

08.01.2022 In response to a request, here’s some shots of one of two Australian 12’ Cadet dinghies built with kids from the South Sydney Police Community Youth Club in 1999-2000, thanks to PCYC benefactor John Winning of Winning Appliances. Originating in the 1920’s as a one-design boat for boys, the class is still active in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, though the hulls are now mostly fibreglass and the dipping lugs’l has been replaced by Bermudan rig. More than 300 have been built, and with a crew of three make a great training boat. Many of Australia’s leading sailors came through the class.
04.01.2022 I deserve a beer after a day of steam-bending the lower sheer clamp on my raised-deck 24’ Ranger class gaffer. The forward section is clamped on the outside ( I... steamed it in situ in plastic tubing), the aft section lifted into the boat and clamped close to where it’s going to live. The two sections will be joined with a locked stepped scarf. See more

04.01.2022 Had a close look today at the two SALVO class boats I built in 1998-99 with two teams from the Work-for-the-Dole scheme for Sailability. Strip-planked in Wester...n Red Cedar and sheathed with glass and WEST System epoxy. Still in good nick after over twenty years of being sailed multiple times every week. About to receive a bit of TLC from former business partner Simon Sadubin at Sydney Wooden Boats, Mona Vale. I get all warm and runny whenever I see them out on the Harbour, the volunteers from Sailability are providing a great opportunity for the disabled community to get out on the water. See more
