24.01.2022 Disaster drill Today we ran our annual multi-agency emergency exercise with a simulated aircraft crash in Botany Bay. The scenario involved a domestic aircraft flying from Adelaide to Sydney missing the runway, with more than 180 passengers onboard. ... 17 agencies and 200 personnel tested the response procedures, with helicopters deploying life rafts and first responders rescuing passengers and safety dummies from the water.

24.01.2022 "No two days at the airport are the same. I help passengers with whatever they need while theyre at the airport. Theyre the most important person in my day and it doesnt matter who you are or where youre going if you need a hand, Im here for you. Im most looking forward to getting back into the airport and resuming my volunteering role. Theres nothing quite like it and I miss the other volunteers terribly." Sheila has been a Sydney Airport Ambassador for 16 years. During the pandemic, shes learned to keep herself busy by doing aqua and arm chair yoga and pilates. We hope to see our ambassadors back in the terminals soon.

21.01.2022 A year ago, wed never guessed that the aviation industry would be facing a crisis. This time-lapse video by our neighbour Kent Eriksson shows the reduction in our air traffic compared to last year. We are thinking of our airline partners and their staff who have been affected by this pandemic. Lets hope we can all fly again soon!

21.01.2022 We Sydney too. Absolutely love this message by Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney. Were all in this together. Jan Breckwoldt Photography

21.01.2022 Ive worked at Sydney Airport through the SARS epidemic and let me tell you, Ive never seen anything like what weve experienced with COVID-19. Ive been at the airport for over 40 years, so it really is like a second-home for me and the thousands of people working here are family. Weve pulled together like we always do to keep the airport pulse alive, the lights on and the systems operating. I cant wait to hear the whir of the baggage system firing up again in full force.... Bring it on!" Before the pandemic, Baggage Handling System Client Services Manager, Kevin Thorsby oversaw up to 38,000 bags each day, making sure bags were checked-in and worked their way through the system seamlessly.

21.01.2022 The NSW government has introduced a requirement for mandatory face masks in a number of indoor settings. Consistent with this we will require face masks in terminals from Monday 4 January. Please bring your own mask where you can. More: sydneyairport.com.au/covid19

21.01.2022 "There was very little focus on safety and mental health back in the early 70s. I've witnessed everything from a plane crash in 1980 that killed 13 people on board, to a Pan American aircraft that overshot the runway in 1971. I remember as if it were yesterday. Over the years, we've put a laser focus on safety and mental health at the airport. It's been a huge step in the right direction."... Graeme Brown is SYD's longest serving employee. This World Mental Health Day, he's encouraging everyone to be mindful of their mental health.

20.01.2022 This week we celebrate National Reconciliation Week. At Sydney Airport, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands, waterways and skyways where we work and in which we live. We pay respect to the Elders, past and present, and recognise the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of First Nation peoples throughout Australia. #InThisTogether #NRW2020

20.01.2022 You know its going to be a great day when you see a double rainbow!

19.01.2022 Its World Environment Day! Were very lucky to be surrounded by nationally significant wetlands, home to a diverse range of fish, birds and native flora species. As one of the worlds oldest continually operating airports, its essential we have a clear approach to environmental management across our operations. 19.01.2022 Great to see Australia's iconic airline celebrated around Sydney. Happy 100th birthday Qantas!

18.01.2022 It's an uncertain time to be travelling and some of you may feel anxious about safety. That's why we took an important step to get this accreditation. Sydney Airport has received the Airport Health Accreditation by Airports Council International, which assessed new health measures and procedures introduced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic against global standards. The accreditation covers all passenger areas and processes including cleaning, staff protection, physical layout, passenger communications and passenger facilities.

15.01.2022 2020 was a difficult year for the aviation industry. Duty managers like Sonia were at the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis, ensuring passengers have a safe and seamless experience at the airport. Sonia is hoping the buzz returns to the terminals in 2021, and so are we.

13.01.2022 It may be quiet in the terminals, but out in the airfield things are cracking on. The Northern Ponds Upgrade project which began in November 2019, will use existing Bays 83-85 to create additional airport capacity, allowing up to three aircraft to simultaneously be refuelled, serviced and boarded remotely from the terminal. 12.01.2022 During National Volunteer Week, wed like to say a special thank you to our Airport Ambassadors. Having operated in our terminals since 1999, the Airport Ambassadors have helped millions of passengers navigate their way through the Airport and beyond always with a smile. We cant wait to see them back in our terminals!

12.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1964, The Beatles touched down at Sydney Airport. There were scenes of hysteria from the crowd of more than 1000 screaming fans, and 150 police were on hand to try and keep control. Although cold and raining heavily, the band was paraded on an open-top truck.... Whats your favourite Beatles song? Image courtesy of A.Kemp/Fairfax Syndication

12.01.2022 As part of National NAIDOC week celebrations, we held a flag raising ceremony with the Australian Federal Police, followed by a traditional dance by the Gamay Dancers. For thousands of generations before Sydney Airport existed, Indigenous people had a cultural and spiritual connection to this area, and we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

12.01.2022 Hands up if youre over the moon that its Friday. by @aussiepomm

11.01.2022 Were working hard to provide essential services through this tough time. Repatriation flights have helped take hundreds of stranded travellers home and freight services bring essential commodities to and from Australia. This means we have welcomed some interesting airlines to Sydney Airport over the last few weeks. Take a look at some of the aircraft that have visited our runways lately.... Kurt Ams

11.01.2022 Its not every day that you get to see aerobatic aircraft at Sydney Airport! While were operating at a reduced capacity, a team of pilots called The Stooges took the opportunity to take to the skies and land at SYD. Its safe to say Eddie and his team were chuffed with this once in a lifetime opportunity to fly off the main runway.... Kurt Ams

11.01.2022 You may have seen that our east west runway is now being used for aircraft parking. This closure ensures we can continue to help our airline partners while keeping the airport operational for vital cargo flights and the movement of essential workers. Its an unusual sight but wont be for much longer as airlines gear up to start flying again.... Kurt Ams

10.01.2022 Cafe owner Jacob Maarabani has been working at the Domestic Terminal for almost five years. With domestic travel slowly returning, he has fired up the coffee machines and is ready to welcome you back. Whether youre the boss or the barista, COVID-19 has affected everyone at the airport. As a family-run business it was heartbreaking to have those tough conversations with each person that worked with us theyre like family. 10.01.2022 Our friends from The Social Outfit will be at T2 Domestic Terminal to sell their reusable three-layer face masks.
