23.01.2022 Alliance leaders, including unionists, Bangladeshi leaders, church members, and international student leaders paid their respects today to Bijoy Paul and four other uber delivery cyclists killed in Australia over the last two months. International students and temporary workers are exposed to dangerous working conditions in their work, are not covered by Jobkeeper or Jobseeker and face exploitation of all kinds. This is our collective mess to fix up. State and Federal governm...ents can act. Sydney can do better. #rights4riders Transport Workers Union - TWU, Leichhardt Uniting Church - LUC, Shelter NSW, United Workers Union, Sydney Community Forum

22.01.2022 Are you an international student? Join us at this free workshop next Tuesday to learn about your rights in Australia and to connect with other students who are working for the common good.

18.01.2022 Well done to the Marrickville Local Organising Team who campaigned and proved decisive in Tuesday night. Over 80 local Alliance leaders participated in campaigning for affordable housing through the consultation process. On Tuesday councillors heard powerful testimonies on the need for affordable housing from secular and church speakers alike.... This is a win for democratic participation on a controversial issue weighing up two competing goods. We look forward to continuing to work with freshHOPE in the future. https://www.smh.com.au//yes-in-our-backyard-inner-west-cou

14.01.2022 "When the coronavirus pandemic transformed our lives as we knew it, I felt the need to do something for our community. As a social worker and Latin American leader, I felt connected and specially identified with the unfair situation faced by international students and people on temporary visas. "As a migrant I understand how difficult is to live in Australia without knowing English, I lived it. When I just arrived to Australia, I was exploited in my first job because I didn’...t speak English. I felt helpless and frustrated because I could not express my ideas clearly and understand others. I was also isolated because I felt a barrier between me and my surrounding that affected my self-esteem. "As part of the Sydney Alliance community, I listened to international students’ stories and heard about their challenges during the pandemic. These were stories of fight, hope, perseverance, resiliency and above all power. I felt worried, annoyed and ready to join in this journey for justice and wellbeing. "I feel grateful and honoured to join the Sydney Alliance and connect with the international students’ community. Together we can make a difference!" - Karinna, Assistant Organiser

13.01.2022 In a room full of education providers, staff from the Departments of Education and Home Affairs, and recruitment education agents, Diana and Chaitra were able to amplify the voices of international students and invite the private sector to work with students and civil society for fairer outcomes for students. Over 30 individuals and organisations said YES to start the work for the common good Great to see the power of honest and uncomfortable conversations! Congratulations Diana and Chaitra for your powerful intervention in Canberra at the Symposium of the Future of International Education

With Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre, Neighbourhood Matters, Salvos Street Level, Vinnies NSW, People with Disability Australia.... The team will meet again in January to plan action for the common good of Surry Hills in 2021

05.01.2022 Today, international students talked to Premier Gladys Berejiklian about the challenges faced by those on temporary visas during this difficult time. Thank you to Addison Road Community Organisation for the amazing work they have been doing supporting international students and organising today's event.

05.01.2022 Well done Mary Waterford AM, Chair of Sydney Alliance and her partner Jude, recognised by the Blue Mountains Council for a lifetime of organising and commitment to the common good!

02.01.2022 The iron rule of community organising says "Never do for others what they can do for themselves." Today emerging leaders from the Sierra Leonean, Ahwazi, Hazara and Rohingyan communites gathered to discern the next steps of the People Seeking Asylum campaign. They led a conversation filled with frustration about the hardships people seeking asylum face, and with hope about what could be possible if people build power together. Well done Idrissa, Magdalene, Malek, Najib and Sajeda! The Alliance is proud to know you, and support your struggle for justice and dignity for people seeking safety.

02.01.2022 Coles locks out lifelong workers... Alliance leaders were proud to be in solidarity with members of the United Workers Union on Friday. The workers have been locked out by Coles at Smeaton Grange in South West Sydney. The Smeaton Grange Distribution Centre will be closed down in the next few years due to automation. The workers - some of whom have worked there for 30 years want to be redeployed within the company. Coles has responded by locking them out for three months. ... Workers in the new automated warehouse should be on the same pay and conditions as the current Smeaton Grange warehouse - to prevent Coles from automating well-paying warehousing jobs and replacing them with automated DCs on $10 less per hour. Stable and fairly paid work is the foundation for thriving families and a healthy economy, civil society, and democracy. Photos: The Camden-Wollondilly Alliance team, and Mal Fruean from the NSW Council for Pacific Communities joined the workers on Friday.
