24.01.2022 This weeks High Notes has important information for students returning to school. http://www.sydneyboyshigh.com/publicat/high-notes/vol21no12 Sydney Boys High Plan for Term 2 Phase Zero and Phase One Given the evolving nature of Department of Health advice, and NSW Government responses to the health crisis we face together, it does not seem prudent to plan too far ahead. Faculties have already submitted their plans for an online mode for the month of May. These plans will... be implemented in weeks 1 C and 2 A. Thereafter, they will need to be varied to accommodate a face-to-face cycle. We aim to achieve four objectives in the first cycle: keep the staff safe, preserve the timetable, prioritise and maximise engagement in face-to-face learning and maintain student safety. In subsequent cycles we will endeavour to assess all students, commencing with Year 12 and cascading down though the academic years. Our CANVAS Learning Management System has empowered staff to deliver lessons in synchronous and asynchronous modes and to test and assess online. On 11 May, High is planning a one-cycle roster, commencing with Week 3 B, followed by Week 4 C and Week 5 A. Year 12 will attend school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays during the cycle. Years 11, 10 & 9 are to share Tuesdays. Years 7,8 & 9 share Wednesdays. Thursdays will be shared among Years 7-11. Fridays will have Years 8, 11 and 10 sharing. There are 15 days per cycle with two years attending each day, amounting to 30 teaching days. Year 12 will have nine days face-to-face per cycle, Year 11 five days and each of the other year groups four days each. At a maximum, attendance will comprise between 32% and 34% of the school enrolment on any one day. As in Term 1, a space will be set aside and supervised for those students who need to come to school every day as from 29 April.

02.01.2022 Just a reminder to register for this event happening this Sunday. At bottom of post see a message from the OBU. The Sydney High School Old Boys Union is hosting a webinar for current students - Early Career + University Preparation. Four old boys will be speaking to current students to share their knowledge and insight into these topics. Please join them! When: Sunday 29 November 2020 at 2.30 pm RSVP: shsobu.org.au... From the OBU: The OBU wishes its sincere congratulations to the graduating cohort of 2020 in this watershed year. As High boys round the turn of their HSC examinations, seemingly overcoming the greatest challenge in their lives so far, it is time to turn their eyes to the second great hurdle university. University can be a daunting prospect for a first-year student, as the wealth of opportunities and choices threatens to swamp them. But much like how high school and the HSC are viewed in the prospects for university, so is university for the start of their careers. It is important to well prepare oneself to navigate these deep waters, which is why the OBU is hosting a webinar fronted by a panel of highly-accomplished guest speakers who have recently or about to graduate from university. Some of their highlights include being featured on the front page of the Australian Financial Review, interning at Microsoft’s international headquarters in Redmond (USA), being named the Australian Student Leader of the Year, to going on exchange to the renowned Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania. The OBU strongly urges the Class of 2020, but also other current High cohorts and parents to attend this webinar to gain perspectives in what to realistically expect at university, how to best prepare, to where the opportunities lie and how to take advantage of them. With a panel with experience that spans the corporate sectors of banking, law, technology, trading, accounting, funds management to government, as well as experiences across all aspects of university life from exchange, societies, case competitions, scholarships etc. the attendees will be able gain from these Old Boys imparting their opinions and experiences, as well as being able to ask live questions. In the extremely competitive graduate job market, getting an informational head start to learn where the first-year internships/cadetships/traineeships are, how to allocate subject and major selections to maximise WAM (academic grades), to an overview of what companies search for in their entry-level hires, may prove to be the edge that High boys can take advantage of. Moreover the panel will endeavour to cover how to format a resume for professional consumption as well as providing tips to the boys on how to ace their interviews. Therefore, the OBU hopes that the boys will attend this webinar to best prepare them for the next chapter of their lives.
