So, tune in to the awesome archive of Free Buddhist Audio, and follow the famous opening words of so many sutras - "Thus have I heard." 23.01.2022 Rolling on with the Saturday Dharma Morning greats, here we have a very grainy Nagasuri speaking from the SBC shrine room, on challenging racism and discrimination. Part of a theme on the same.

22.01.2022 This is for you, mystery woman Caroline! Tried to call you back, but your number is disconnected. 11th Step meditation and meeting IS still running at Sydney Buddhist Centre, Fridays at 7pm. This meeting is suitable for anyone in recovery from anything (including, as Shuddha says, "selfing,") and anyone is welcome, history of addiction or not.

22.01.2022 Saturday Dharma Morning talk - Samacitta introduces Dharmamati, speaking on "Equanimity as a way beyond bias and prejudice." How can this word encapsulate Buddhist practice? What does this quality really point to? Attraction/repulsion, craving/aversion, right/wrong - how can Buddhist practice help free us from this ping pong match? How does this relate relate to bias and prejudice?

22.01.2022 SATURDAY DHARMA IS NIGH! Tune in this week in person or via zoom to challenge all forms of racism and discrimination with Nagasuri. Whether it's out there in the world or here with us, how can we respond to these issues creatively, constructively and compassionately? What about the Buddha's teachings on equality??? Find out on Saturday! Info and linkage at sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au

20.01.2022 Who are all these beautiful people? What are they doing? What do they have in common? Say hello to the Order members of the newfound regional online class. 19.01.2022 Meet Nagapriya! A big heads up for Saturday folks, as Nagapriya will be zooming in on us from Mexico to speak on Buddhism and "the transcendent." What is this, you may ask? As Nagapriya says - "One way to talk about this is in terms of the principle of Other Power (as opposed to self-power) and is embodied in the cosmic Buddha, Amitabha. Through invoking Other Power we begin to align ourselves with the enlightened mind." Even more than this and the smashing quote below, Nagap...riya will discuss how Buddhist practice is not simply about seeking emotional positivity or personal equilibrium, but MUCH more. More than just a little bit of polite "philosophy" to be had on Saturday, for sure. So rock on up either in person to meditate and participate together, or zoom in yourselves at 10:15am. (Nagapriya is also an elegant author, having written three so far - "Exploring Karma and Rebirth", "Visions of Mahayana Buddhism", and the new "Seeing Like a Buddha." Pick up some copies at SBC if you're lucky!) See more

18.01.2022 This Saturday Carudaya rounds out her exploration of the "Three Lakshanas", the marks of conditioned life, with the third mark - REFRAME YOUR EXPERIENCE : Non-self - from Reflection to Insight. She shares a quote by German Theravadin teacher Anlayo - "By directing awareness again and again to the true characteristics of conditioned existence, these will become more and more familiar, imprint themselves onto one’s way of viewing experience, and thereby lead to similar ways ...of cognising in the future." Meditation as usual at 9:30am at the Centre, followed by talk at 10:15am. Join in via zoom @ sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au

17.01.2022 First of our Saturday morning Dharma talks! A lot of people have been asking us if these talks have been recorded - they have, but unfortunately, some of the zoom quality leaves a lot to be desired! We have some coming up on video, others restricted to audio. So in no particular order - Here we have Padmadakini, talking with enthusiasm on the role of faith and intution in the Buddhist life. More talks to follow!

16.01.2022 Some changes to classes running (or not) during the holiday season : For Dharmagatu, Karunamitra and the Monday night Back Room Boys, there will be no drop-in men's group on December 21st and 28th, otherwise all running. For Buddhankapali and her faithful crew, Wednesday morning meditation and book group will run on the 23rd December, then have all of January off, reconvening early February.... For Samacitta and the army of Saturday Dharma Morning, there will be no class/meditation on 26th of December and 2nd of January. Unless otherwise advised, Young Sydney Buddhists, Women's drop-in Thursday, Thursday evening meditation, and 11th step meditation and meeting will all continue through the holiday break. Happy silly season!

13.01.2022 Our thriving Saturday morning drop in meditation and Dharma class is taking a new approach - theme months! Throughout October, in conjunction with the wider Triratna "Courageous Conversations about Race," Saturday morning will be hosting our own discussions around the theme of race and living a Buddhist life. Last week Buddhankapali kicked us off with an examination of the question of race and the Buddhist teaching of "no self." This week, Som will speak on his personal persp...ective of race practicing Buddhism in contemporary Australia. Following on, we'll hear from Maitribandha on Indian revolutionary leader Dr Ambedkar, Saraha on "How to Change the World," and Dharmamati on "Equanimity as a Way Beyond Bias and Prejudice." Sure to be an interesting few weeks on a topic of relevance right now in Centres across the worldwide community. As always, you can join in person at the Centre in Newtown for meditation at 9:30am, or zoom in yourselves for talk at 10:15am. See sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au for links!

13.01.2022 SATURDAY DHARMA MORNING : This week, join mitra extraordinaire David for all the fun and frivolity of running in circles, spending time and money in all the wrong places - and how we can move to a more rewarding model, thanks to the Dharma. Check in as always in person or online, for meditation at 9:30am, followed by talk at 10:15am. Check out sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au for zoom details.

13.01.2022 SATURDAY DHARMA - This week we have Dharmamati, continuing in our theme around race, discrimination and prejudice (or if you like, multiculturalism, love and inclusion!) This week Dharmamati will explore how we can employ the quality of equanimity (or upekkh) to move us beyond these limiting and harmful views, which stand between us and true solidarity with all people. Guided and unguided meditation as usual at 9:30am with Loris or Nagasuri, then tune on in for the talk at 10:15am.

12.01.2022 19th - 22nd NOVEMBER - THE BRAHMAVIHRS Beautiful retreat on the Sublime Abodes now bookable through SBC website, lead by Padmadakini and Priyada. Padmadakini writes -... "'Tending the Garden of the Heart In Springtime' Come on retreat and enjoy a weekend of heart-opening Beauty and Wisdom. We will explore these ''divine abodes' of love, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity through meditation, music, poetry and ritual. The Buddha taught again and again that the Brahma Viharas are naturally occurring qualities that can arise within our own state of being if given the opportunity. They are his primary heart teachingsthe ones that connect most directly with our desire for true happiness. They are our spiritual birthright - potentially existent seeds enfolded in our consciousness, and need only the same kind of care we use in tending a garden to fully manifest and bloom in our state of being and are extended without limitation to all beings." Please note folks that you must be experienced or have a working familiarity with the two meditation practices taught at SBC, mindfulness of breathing and mett bhvan, for this retreat. Basic meditation teaching won't be included for these practices. Otherwise head on over to sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au to book on!

12.01.2022 SATURDAY DHARMA MORNING - David continues his series on the 4 Noble Truths with this intriguing premise. What are these mysterious steps of his? And what's with the footnotes? 10.01.2022 Gambhiraja finds True North on Regional Sunday class, 15th November.

10.01.2022 Coming up tomorrow night we have an online special event! 108 Year Birthday Puja for Sangharakshita! Each year for the past 17 years (!!!) we have celebrated Sangharakshita (our teacher and founder of the Triratna Buddhist Order and Community) in a puja on his birthday. This Wednesday we'll be continuing the tradition - only in online form. So join in with us tomorrow evening as Dharmalata leads us in our 18th puja!... We'll kick off at 7pm watching a clip on Avalokitesvara Rupa @ https://www.urgyenhouse.org followed by logging on to start the puja at 7:15pm. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join in with us us for chanting, reading, reflection and remembrance for Sangharakshita on his birthday. 09.01.2022 Here we have Nandavani rocking the Regional Dharma with the story of the Buddha - his acknowledgement of the reality of old age, sickness and death, his going forth, his spiritual career finding his way through various practices of meditation and severe austerity, and finally to his awakening. We're still processing talks to get them out there folks (especially audio quality) so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled!

08.01.2022 Tonight we have a very special Puja to Manjughosa! Compiled by Bodhidasa, he writes : "With 2020’s year of Perfect Vision moving towards its conclusion, it is an auspicious time to revisit the bodhisattvas of great wisdom. Figures such as Pranjaparamita (whom we evoked in January) and Manjughosa epitomise the beauty and eloquence of the Dharma. This puja devoted to Manjughosa is a new work, but drawn from the prayers and praises written by two of Sangharakshita’s main Tibeta...n teachers. Both Jamjang Khyentse and Dilgo Khyentse’s poetic works were referred to in the construction of this puja. Whilst it conforms to the structure of the Sevenfold Puja, the words of this puja emphasise the power of Manjughosa’s delicate and conscious speech which cuts through delusion. In a time rife with polarisation, confusion and fake news it is a relief to know that Manjughosa can be turned to as a guide in dark places. Copies of the puja will be made available to those who attend." Check out sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au for links!

07.01.2022 REGIONAL SUNDAY DHARMA!!! Regional class is still running, people! Everyone from everywhere coming together online for some virtual community love. A great way to spread your feelers and get to know people from all over. This week, Danapriya will be talking about his new book, "It's Not Out There: How to see differently and live an extraordinary, ordinary life". He'll be discussing how most of us constantly look outside ourselves for something: happiness, love, contentment. But this something is not out there. It is within us. Jump on the zoom link at sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au this Sunday morning 9:30am for meditation, then Dharma talk and chat with Danapriya and the gang.

07.01.2022 Otherwise known as a cleaning and maintenance day. Every week people come to the Sydney Buddhist Centre to learn to meditate, to practice the Dharma, and to deepen friendships. Keeping the centre running and looking beautiful depends on the generosity of many people, not only financially, but practically - running and supporting classes, performing administration work, buying supplies, and of course the practical maintenance of the building. This will be the first of a set of... regular opportunities to give back by coming together for a day to do the cleaning and maintenance needed to keep the Sydney Buddhist Centre looking beautiful and suitable for our holding activities. The work will include deep cleaning, organisation, light gardening at the front of the building, and building maintenance. We hope people who enjoy coming to the Sydney Buddhist Centre will find participating great way to give back in a meaningful and practical way and be enjoyable and productive for newcomers as well as old hands. You may like to join the Saturday Dharma Morning class beforehand, and we will end the day with a simple (re)dedication ceremony. All welcome and appreciated!

04.01.2022 Tomorrow 10am - 1pm, at the Centre in Newtown, Silent Sunday is happening. Best suited for experienced meditators (no guiding is provided for these sits, just the pure sound of the bell) Silent Sunday offers a tranquil oasis in the weekend, a pool of quiet, and the opportunity to practice in noble silence together with others. Sits are 40 minutes, with silent breaks.

02.01.2022 This coming Saturday we have Padmadakini tackling a topic which is often a difficult one for some people walking the Buddhist path - Faith. She writes : "How do we understand Faith in the practice of the Dharma? What role does Faith play in Buddhism? ... The God Who Only Knows Four Words Every Child Has known God, Not the God of names, Not the God of don'ts, Not the God who ever does Anything weird, But the God who only knows four words And keeps repeating them, saying: "Come dance with Me." Come Dance. From the poet Hafiz Sangharakshita has says The central problem of the spiritual life is finding emotional equivalents for our intellectual understanding. Although we may struggle to find these equivalents, when we do they carry far more weight than our relatively shallow, rational understanding of an argument in fact, they may leave us deeply affected." Padmadakini will share some of her own experience of the transformative nature Faith and explore 3 ways that Faith is understood in the Buddhist tradition. Sure to be a very topical morning - meditation as usual at 9:30am, followed by talk at 10:15am.

02.01.2022 More Saturday Dharma Morning offerings! Here we have Carudaya speaking on the Three Lakshanas, or "marks of conditioned existence," they being impermanence, insubstantiality, and unsatisfactoriness.

02.01.2022 Based on the study of the popular book Life with Full Attention, this eight week course explores Buddhist mindfulness practice. We often feel like we’re not living life to the full. Instead of directly experiencing life we’re lost in a cacophony of thought, anxiety and chaos. Increasingly people are turning to mindfulness for help with this. But the Buddha’s mindfulness teachings are far more than a way of coping with the stress of the modern world. They are a direct way of ...seeing deeply into the truth of life and living from that, a direct path to joy, excitement and freedom. On this course you’ll learn, in a step-by-step way, how to harness the magic of the Buddha’s four fundamental dimensions of mindfulness, as well as how to apply them to the life you’re actually living. This is course of doing, experiencing, and practising: while you will be asked to do some reading each week, it is not an academic pursuit. Together we’ll explore how a new world can open for us through greater awareness of our body; our feeling experiences; our thoughts; our relationships and the beauty which surrounds us in this world. $195 / $130 concession - Book online at sydneybuddhistcentre.org.au

01.01.2022 Saturday Dharma morning 28th November - Nagasuri speaking at the SBC on the Sangha - The third Jewel and a necessity.
