23.01.2022 Yesterday Pink Hope announced it would be co-funding genetic testing for women who are at moderate to high risk of breast and/or ovarian cancer and who had just missed out on funded testing via the public system. The project is supported by Barbells for Boobs and, for eligible patients, the test will cost $200. See www.YourRisk.com.au Patients can assess their risk by downloading a Family History Questionnaire from the Sydney Cancer Genetics website and discussing it with ...their GP or by using Pink Hope's YourRisk tool (developed in conjunction with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre). Criteria for publicly funded testing, as well as management guidelines, can be found on the Cancer Institute's eviQ website. The test must be ordered by a doctor, who assumes the medico-legal responsibility for interpreting the test and who provides genetic counselling, perhaps with the assistance of a genetic counsellor, regarding the implications and limitations of testing and the possibility of unexpected and/or uncertain findings. The aim of the program is to raise awareness of reduced test costs and the option of private clinics and self funded testing for patients who are looking for an alternate to the public system.

19.01.2022 Linking Patients with Researchers Regardless of Postcode The Cancer Genetics Fund launches the ClinTrial Refer Cancer Genetics App The majority of eligible rural and regional Australians are not involved in research. ... Dr Hilda High, Genetic Oncologist, explained: I do a lot of Telehealth to rural and regional areas of Australia. Many of patients and families are very keen to be involved in research. But they think that they have to live in a capital city. Most cancer genetics trials DON’T require the patient to live close to the researchers. For example, patients can answer a questionnaire online or over the phone, send their DNA or tumour block to the research lab or attend annual screening in a tertiary metropolitan hospital. New trials become available all the time. Keeping up to date can be difficult for genetic counsellors let alone for GPs. That’s where the Cancer Genetics version of the already widely used ClinTrial Refer app comes in. Let’s say you have a strong family history of pancreatic cancer. You can use the App to find screening and prevention trials. On the other hand, if you and your family have a history of bowel polyps, you can find studies investigating why the polyps occur and novel ways of preventing them. The ClinTrial Refer Cancer Genetics App displays all the information you need: what the trial is about, what features you or your family need to have and even who to contact. Some trials ask that your specialist refers you while others are very happy for patients to contact them directly. The app is free, for patients and doctors as well as for the researchers. It is hosted by The Cancer Genetics Fund, (www.CancerGenetics.com.au ), a registered charity committed to preventing cancer and its effect on individuals and families by promoting awareness of hereditary cancer syndromes and their management. Understanding the hereditary cause of cancers has wide reaching benefits, including unlocking new treatments for all patients with cancer, said Dr High, an unpaid director of The Cancer Genetics Fund. The more people enrolled in research, the closer we get to understanding, treating and preventing cancer.

07.01.2022 BRCA testing FREE for high risk patients From 1st November, funded BRCA testing will be available for high risk patients without having to queue up in the public system or having to travel long distances to a public familial cancer clinic. 04.01.2022 The Garvin report highlights poorer cancer outcomes for regional and rural Australians. However, Telehealth can redress many of these "post code" issues Many specialists like myself (including Medical Oncologist and Dermatologists and even allied health professionals) are already using TeleHealth. Telehealth can increase the rate of detection and diagnosis of cancer, address lack of awareness about cancer risk, educate about screening / prevention options and provide access... to cancer support services. However, finding TeleHealth specialstis can be tricky. The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine has a directory on their website (http://www.ehealth.acrrm.org.au/). As a Genetic Oncologist working in private practice, I conduct bulk billed TeleHealth consults throughout rural and regional Australia. These consults usually occur via a GP providing not only a local service for the patient but an education opportunity for the GP and their practice. People at increased cancer risk due to an inherited predisposition do not only live in capital cities. Conducting Telehealth via the public system is more complicated due to state boundaries and firewalls but these issues are not insurmountable. Two days ago I gave a presentation entitled: TeleHealth in Private Practice: If a physio can do it, so can you! as part of the Royal Australian College of Physician Telehealth workshop. A co-presenter addressed TeleHealth from a public perspective. The presentations were recorded and will be available on their YouTube site in a few days (https://www.youtube.com/user/RACP1938/videos ) and I will provide a link here too. GPs, patients and specialists should consider Telehealth consults. Health outcomes should not be determined by where an individual lives, especially when we have the technology to overcome distance.
