16.01.2022 A new way to have your weetbix!! When you’re craving something fresh and fruity (and/or just really need a good hit of carbs) but don’t want to compromise on protein. This is 2 x crumbled weetbix (#glutenfree for me - these are made from Sorghum a naturally very nutritious grain) mixed with my milk replacement of the day (protein powder blended with frozen cherries), topped with slices of fresh kiwi, strawberry, natural yoghurt and a handful of @freedomfoods crunchy chocolat...e cereal (my new favourite). Sure you could also have this bowl without the protein powder but for me this leaves me hungry again 1-2 hours later. The 2 scoops of protein adds an extra 100 cals and brings this up to more than 30g protein all up. Any protein powder will work. 13.01.2022 I think I’ve just discovered my new favourite yoghurt! No added sugar (2 tsp of naturally occurring from milk and blueberry puree). Perfect snack-size at 106 calories. Almost 8g of protein. Super creamy and delicious and has tonnes of probiotics. As a bonus they also add lactase - great for sensitive tummies. 13.01.2022 3 ways stress is killing your waistline- it’s more than just the comfort eating! 1) Stress hormone cortisol and thyroid hormones (which regulate your metabolism and energy) are made from the same substance. High stress = more cortisol + less thyroid hormones = reduced metabolic rate = increased weight gain and fatigue. 2) High cortisol (from high stress) decreases melatonin production. This reduces sleep quality which increases hunger. Melatonin is also important for insulin... sensitivity. Less melatonin leads to insulin resistance which increases sugar and carb cravings, increases conversion of foods into body fat (as they can’t be used as energy) and decreases energy. So, high stress = less melatonin = insulin resistance = more cravings, less energy + more weight gain. 3) Stress reduces available nutrients for producing serotonin. To compensate, your body signals to eat more carbs and sugars which help promote serotonin production. This is part of the stress = comfort eating cycle. Interestingly, cortisol receptors can burn out from excessive or prolonged stress - yet this is prevented with higher blood glucose. So those sugar and carb cravings are also a way of your body helping you to survive the stress. Trying to lose weight? 11.01.2022 At SCN we love using a variety of resources to educate our patients on how to reach their goals through a healthy balanced (and enjoyable) diet. This is one of our patients' favourite resources - the 'perfect plate' image. Yes of course, some may prefer to swap out the carbs for other high fibre foods such as a side of avocado, some nuts/seeds or some olives and that's ok too. Some may even prefer to swap out the traditional carbs for a serve of fruit or two immediately aft...er a meal as a sweet treat - this also works. We work with our patient's preferences - as long as their nutritional needs are being met. This is a good image to hold in mind when ordering out. And try to remember that the SWD (Standard Western Diet) method of recent years - filling a whole plate with pasta/rice/noodles and topping it with a small amount of meat and (if you're lucky) - some vegetables is not the way forward. This type of meal will leave you feeling fatigued and likely craving sweets/coffee/a nap mid afternoon. However, follow these perfect plate guidelines whenever you can and you'll find yourself feeling more energised, more satisfied and having better control over your cravings too. This all adds up to higher motivation for exercise, better performance and recovery and a more successful and satisfying weight loss journey. I hope this gives you a little motivation boost for the weekend. Enjoy the sunshine (when it arrives) and the social time but just hold this image in mind when ordering/making meals. Though it tastes like a big bowl of naughty sorbet- today’s bowl is an easy one to replicate: 1 cup of frozen mango, 1 cup frozen four fruits mix, 1 cup raspberries.
