25.01.2022 Three images of the latest drill / sample hole on Mars. This is the 27th sample hole since landing almost 8 years ago (Earth years) This sample hole is called '...Mary Anning'. In a recent mission update by Michelle Minitti, one of the Planetary Geologist working on this mission, Michelle wrote the following: "Mary Anning," is particularly special. Mary Anning spent her life scouring the seaside cliffs near Lyme Regis, along the southern coast of England, for fossils. She uncovered innumerable samples, most notably the first full Ichthyosaur and the first Plesiosaur. But as all too often occurs in society, Mary Annings gender and societal status led her groundbreaking work and discoveries to be dismissed by the scientific establishment or, worse, appropriated by men. Let Mary Annings name on Mars remind us to include everyone in the endeavor of exploration (Mary Anning - 1799-1847). The colour image is from the right side mast camera on sol 2838, the greyscale images are from the telephoto chemistry camera's remote micro images (RMI) the next day (sol 2839). For scale the drill hole diameter is 1.6 centimeters (0.63 inches). Look closely at the RMI photos, one was taken before the rover zapped the back wall of the hole with its powerful laser, the other after the laser strikes. We'll eventually see closer colour images from the rover, but those will have to wait until the powdered rock samples have been delivered to the sensitive instruments inside the rover for analysis which will take some days. 24.01.2022 Martian Rock Garden: Curiosity rover acquired a sequence of drive direction left-side mast camera images after arriving at the edge of the Bagnold Dunes in Ga...le crater on mission sol 1648 (26 March 2017). The images captured an extensive group of heavily weathered fallen sedimentary blocks adjacent to the sample collection site at Ogunquit Beach. I have used 3 of the 5 images to create this simple mosaic and added a 1 meter long scale bar using AlgorimancerPG. The mosaic was assembled in Microsoft Image Composite Editor (MS ICE) and cropped to 16:9 so open the full size and enjoy the detail full screen. The colours are raw, I have only sharpened the contrast a little after stitching the frames together. 23.01.2022 Take a look at this opportunity to observe remotely - designed for amateur astronomers! Wow!

23.01.2022 We reached more than 43 million data points in @AAVSO International Database!! Thank you to all our observers who made this possible! #coolscience #citizenscience #aavso

20.01.2022 Our next speaker, Dr Richard Wainscoat, comes all the way from the heights of Hawaii via zoom - find out more https://www.sydneycityskywatchers.org/events-and-news

19.01.2022 Fascinating insights into past astronomical happenings in November - and celebrations of those born in this month who contributed to our knowledge of astronomy and all things connected to Space exploration. 18.01.2022 Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) finder charts for the next week or so. Looking NW about an hour after sunset. The comet appears as a fuzzy blue/green patch of light, ...brighter in the centre and fading to the edges. It is currently in the range of mag 5.0 to 5.5 and will be fading over the coming weeks. Binoculars and/or a telescope will be required to see it. The comet can be located in 7x50 Binoculars but higher magnifications are best to help render the faint tail visible. The dust tail will appear to curve to the right and downward. Unfortunately the Moon will wash out the background sky for a few more days yet but the track of the comet listed on the charts will help locate it again. The comet has a period of about 7000 years so it won't be seen again anytime soon! The charts have been generated in Guide 9.0 (Project Pluto). Good luck! :-)

17.01.2022 Before the Sydney Observatory was built in 1858, Sydney didnt have an accurate time standard. The Observatorys first function was to calculate the correct tim...e from the movement of the stars. The Time Ball signalled the time to ships and the post office in Martin Place at 1pm each day. Back in operation this week, the site's Time Ball also celebrates its 162 year anniversary today. : Marinco Kojdanovski

17.01.2022 When Covid-19 struck Paris-based artist Lily Hibberd she decided to collaborate with Sydney City Skywatchers member @cosmictoner to investigate the women who measured the stars. 16.01.2022 November 19, 1969 Apollo 12, piloted by Commander Pete Conrad, successfully landed on the moon 110 hours into the mission. The landing site, dubbed 'Pete's Parking Lot', was walking distance from NASA's own Surveyor 3 launched in 1967.

13.01.2022 Welcome to a mini star party in the times of Covid19. Sydney City Skywatchers members, Ann, George and Iver, dusted off one of our club telescopes, a hundred year old brass refractor that hasn't been out of its box for a while. We had a great time setting it up, figuring out the mount and trying out its collection of accessories and eye pieces. More on BAA3 later. What did we see in our little patch of eastern sky? The jewels of the solar system: Jupiter and Saturn!

13.01.2022 The Central West Astro Photos - Always fascinating entries judged by David Malin OA - are up for display, listen to Dr Andrew Jacob describe some of the winners. https://www.youtube.com/watch

11.01.2022 On this day in 1969, the Apollo 12 lunar module "Intrepid" landed on the Moon in the Ocean of Storms, a mere 538 feet (~164 meters) from the Surveyor 3 spacecraft. This photo, a close up of Surveyor 3 with Apollo 12 in the background, shows the stunning accuracy of the precision landing.
