23.01.2022 Once thought of as a hobby for older women, rug making is cooler than ever as young makers on TikTok get creative with tufting guns. "Fiber art's image may now be changing. De Santos said that TikTok has connected her to Gen Z in a way Instagram never did... "The recent movement has also broken free of historical stereotypes that tufting, embroidery, and needlepoint are exclusively done by women."... https://www.vice.com//handmade-tufting-gun-rug-scene-is-bo

19.01.2022 SYDNEY CRAFT WEEK COVID-19 UPDATE Sydney Craft Week 2020 is still planned to take place between Friday 9 and Sunday 18 October this year with a call for entries going out in May. The Sydney Craft Week team at the Australian Design Centre will advise you if this changes. Following government advice to close non-essential public spaces, Australian Design Centre will close to the public until further notice to help protect the health of all visitors and staff and minimise the sp...read of COVID-19 (coronavirus). We strongly believe (and science backs this up) that the craft, design and creativity are vital for our community, especially in difficult times, contributing to well-being and reducing stress and anxiety. While our public spaces are closed, the ADC team will continue our work behind the scenes. We are developing new digital experiences linking you with artists, crafts people and designers, and will be sharing these over the coming weeks. Please join us online. Well be active on our social media channels Facebook and Instagram. Sign up to our database for email news. The coming months will be difficult for everyone. ADC has been a pivotal part of the craft scene in Sydney since 1964. As a not-for-profit organisation, this closure will have a significant impact on us financially and the creative practitioners that we support. With your help we can continue to support our community through this difficult period. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation or becoming an ADC Friend. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Centre as soon as circumstances allow. Stay safe and well. Lisa Cahill CEO and Artistic Director Australian Design Centre

With festivals and major events having to cancel across the city and the wider world, we have thought deeply about going ahead with Sydney Craft Week this year. As restrictions are easing we have decided to press ahead. Sydney Craft Week is a little different in that it is a city-wide festival of smallish events in most places. We will continue to follow all the NSW Health advice and government restrictions and we hope that by October all events will be possible. We also encourage you to consider ideas for digital events alongside your physical programming. Digital events we can open up to the wider world, particularly where travel restrictions are in place, for the vast numbers of people interested in craft across the globe. 'Change Makers' is our theme for Sydney Craft Week 2020! We think this is so appropriate for the change that we are all dealing with on a daily basis right now. 02.01.2022 Sydney Craft Week is about celebrating creativity and the handmade in all its forms. To own and hold objects that bring joy, to immerse ourselves in the act of making for our mental wellbeing, to connect with likeminded people who live to make this is what Sydney Craft Week is all about. In 2020, our theme Change Makers is about taking this one step further recognising that learning craft skills to enable us to make and appreciate the talent of craftspeople has the powe...r to change our lives for the better. Blue Mountains-based textile artist Julie Paterson is one such change maker. Her Imperfect Manifesto gives us a framework to let go of the fear of failure and embrace unrestrained and joyful creativity to perhaps live a simpler life. In 2020, with the world staying at home, there is even more reason to embrace creativity and simplicity as a way of life. Embrace Julies manifesto and start thinking about what you will do for Sydney Craft Week 2020. The Festival will run from Friday 9 - Sunday 18 October 2020. Applications to take part open 5 May 2020.
