21.01.2022 Student work / Cassandra Balacki put together this sample board for her Certificate IV in Interior Decoration final residential project. We love the furniture she chose and the rattan and vintage-vibe tropical wallpaper combo. To make the board visually cohesive Cassandra used the same colours in her floor plan. The way students put together their sample boards is as varied as the interior schemes they produce. It's an important skill to have, and one that we nurture.

21.01.2022 Certificate IV in Interior Decoration / We're loving the sophisticated summer vibes of this stunning scheme by Cert IV student Fleur Manjoero. Our Certificate IV in Interior Decoration focuses on residential interiors and we love that the classes are made up of people of all ages and from all sorts of backgrounds. Some students come to us straight from school, some are looking for a career change and others want to pursue a passion for interiors to decorate their own homes.... Whatever the reason they find themselves learning with like-minded creatives. You can study the Cert IV during the day or evenings to fit around your job, family or other commitments. Want to find out more about this hands on, practical course? Join us this Friday at our St Leonards campus for our final Info Session of the year. Information Session Friday 27 November, 1pm Register here: https://bit.ly/35cGkSm

15.01.2022 Study interiors in the evening / Whether you're working or wrangling kids during the day don't let that stop you from pursuing your creative dreams! Study the Cert IV in Interior Decoration two nights a week and take the first steps towards making a creative career change - or just do it because you love interiors. Our classes are small, fun and welcoming and you'll be learning from practising Interior Designers who have a passion for teaching. The Cert IV is practical ...and very hands on, with no exams or essays to write. Our School term starts at the end of the month - we follow the NSW public school calendar so there's no need for extra juggling in the school holidays - and there are some places remaining in the evening class. Interested? Head to our website for all the info and get in touch wth our team if you have any questions. We're happy to help! Check out the Cert IV here: https://bit.ly/2XNwa63

14.01.2022 Look up / Sweeping up into a funnel topped by a skylight and a copper roof, the incredible decorative wooden ceiling is the focal point of this London home. (But a close second is that copper kitchen!) Designed by Gianni Botsford Architects, 'House in a Garden' nestles at the back of an 1840s brick townhouse, the fluid form contrasting with its surrounds.

14.01.2022 Sanctuary / It's important for a bedroom to be a sanctuary that you can retreat to and a space you can wake up in feeling refreshed. Soft light - and the ability to block it out, a calming palette, minimal clutter and layered textures are all key in creating a comfortable and stylish space. Interior: Fiona Lynch

11.01.2022 SDS loves / We're a little obsessed with the Menu Dancing Pendant right now. Stunningly simple yet whimsical and playful, the design is evocative of a dancer’s pleated skirt caught mid-twirl. The light is a collaboration between two of Scandinavia’s leading young designers, Boris Berlin and Aleksej Iskos. Beyond loving the style, we applaud the sustainability of the pendant which is made from ET felt - a 100% recyclable material produced from used plastic bottles. Ticking all the boxes!

09.01.2022 Exhale / A stunning corner of stillness in what's been a crazy part of a challenging year! Styling perfection by Ali Ross. Photo Martina Gemmola. Incredible paper clay ceramics by Paola Paronetto .

07.01.2022 The transformative power of colour / Let's face it, going bold with interior colour can be scary for a lot of people, so they opt for the safety of white walls. But, wow, this room comes alive with colour! Swipe for the before shot. This beautiful palette is part of the Dulux Colour Forecast 2021 and based on extensive virtual research into global design trends. There are three tonal palettes which are drawn from nature and tap into our need for reassurance and comfort, whil...st reflecting a desire for a brighter future. To show what a huge impact colour can have on the look and feel of a space stylist Bree Leech took on a predominantly white 1970s home. Whilst the all white interior was neutral and unassuming, adding colour helped highlight the home’s best features and really brought the rooms to life! Leech says. The colours used in the living space are Dulux Light Ceramic and Snowy Mountains Half. Photos Lisa Cohen / Artwork from Modern Times - Ria Green (left) and Taj Alexander

03.01.2022 Launch Your Career! / We were delighted to welcome some of our successful alumni to our Launch Your Career evening last night. The presentations and Q&A were a fantastic and invaluable opportunity for our students to hear career stories and get some really great tips from those who've gone before them. We give students more than the best interiors education... we help them land their dream jobs! Thank you to our fabulous alumni (L to R):... Josvi Mantilla Tchernova / Josvi shared her career changer story from dentistry to design. An Advanced Diploma graduate, Josvi works as an Interior Designer at PTW Architects. Amy Murchison / Sydney Design School Careers Coach Jess Orie / Jess graduated in 2013 and started her career with Gray Puksand. She’s since gone on to work for Siren Design Group and is now an Associate Interior Designer. Anna McMillan / Anna has successfully pivoted from her high powered career as a Business Transformation Leader to running her own interior design business, McMillan Design, with a focus residential projects. Amy Lee Richards / After starting a career in fashion, Amy Lee’s passion for design led her to study interior design. She has found her niche working on large scale commercial projects at alkimi studio. Debbie Cohen / Debbie runs her own interior styling business that she fits around her young children. After burning out in her first high pressure career Debbie embraced her creative side, got her Cert IV and hasn't looked back.

03.01.2022 More than interiors / Advanced Diploma students Stephanie Cardoso, Chelsea Ernst and Maggie Chan created a fantastic rooftop experience as part of their collaborative hotel design project. Glamping in the inner city? Yes please! "With the glamping experience we wanted this space to reflect the Australian bush and give guests a real Aussie experience all while in the heart of the city. Our design aims to encapsulate the bush at sunset and set the scene of fires burning and ...people telling stories around the campfire. Our Hotel concept is based on creating an experiential design which takes guests on a journey." There's an Australian style BBQ restaurant with communal tables and lounge areas to encourage conversation, a pool shaped to represent a billaong and a communal sunken firepit area to encourage story telling around the fire. The firepit area then becomes an outdoor cinema at night. We love that Chelsea, Maggie and Stephanie worked with a strong concept of bringing people together and sharing the culture and history of the area, while delivering something new and unique to the inner city.

02.01.2022 Portfolio skills / Over the past couple of weeks we held workshops for our Cert IV classes to learn important photography and portfolio skills. Students learnt how to shoot their sampleboards and models with insights into lighting and editing, as well as how to design their portfolios to best present their work and skills. We even managed to squeeze in some time to talk about creating a professional Instagram account and we look forward to seeing all these new skills implemented! This beautiful board and professionally edited photo is by Talia Pejkovic.
