21.01.2022 An exciting night at our clinic farm last night where one of our lovely recipients safely foaled down an Embryo Transfer baby. Welcome to the world little one!

20.01.2022 EMBRYO TRANSFER Embryo Transfer is the process of breeding a mare to a selected stallion through artificial insemination, flushing an embryo out of the donor mare and transferring it to a surrogate (or recipient) mare. Generally, the optimal time to flush the donor mare for an embryo is ~7 days post-ovulation when the blastocyst has likely moved into the uterine horn and can be easily flushed out. Once flushed and found (if there is an Embryo), the embryo will be cleane...d and prepared, then transferred into the surrogate mare. The surrogate mare will be re-checked at 14 days for a hopeful pregnancy. See pictured for one of our successful 14-day pregnancies observed in a recipient mare, 7 days post-insemination of the embryo Embryo Transfer is a convenient and modern assisted reproduction technique that allows for the donor dam to produce more than one foal per year, or to continue competing while her foal grows in the recipient mare.

14.01.2022 This radiograph of the left tarsus (or hock) shows a slab fracture in the frontal plane (dorsal aspect) of the third tarsal bone. Slab fractures extend from one articulated surface to another, and are observed in tarsal and carpal bones. These types of fractures commonly occur as a result of developmental abnormalities, trauma or during strenuous exercise. Where suitable, slab fractures may be corrected surgically by placing a screw through the fracture to prompt bone healing.

11.01.2022 What a smashing start to the week! SEP’s dedicated Reproduction team flushed a set of Twin Embryos from a very lucky client’s show jumping mare The twins were separated and transferred into two recipient mares, meaning both twins get the chance at survival - one of the many bonuses of Embryo Transfer. ... Twins in horses are most commonly not identical; they result from the ovulation of two dominant follicles. Getting the timing of the embryo flush right is important for retrieving both embryos at a size that’s appropriate for transfer.

09.01.2022 With the grass dying and grass seeds out in full force, it’s a great time of year to be doing regular checks in your horses mouths to make sure no grass seeds have been caught in there. Here’s some Dr Elly found and cleaned up. If your horse is displaying any symptoms of discomfort, it may be time for a check up.
