25.01.2022 An unidentified 18-footer from a scrapbook courtesy of Steve Kavanagh, 1920’s or ‘30’s. As well as lee-cloths each side this one has a hood or booby hatch forwa...rd of the mast. You can see why sails had to be cut to allow for boom bend, this boom would be 24-27’ long (7.3-8.2m). More 18-footers stuff on www.openboat.com.au See more

07.01.2022 Gaff or Gunter? In an new article on the RIGS AND SAILS Page at www.openboat.com.au Ian Smith tries to find a line between gaff and gunter rigs and looks into t...he history of gunter rig. This shot of 18-footers from the Sydney Flying Squadron Collection from about 1933 contrasts the high-peaked skiff-type rig of ABERDARE (foreground) which was sometimes (but not always) referred to as a gunter rig, over the older style of TANGALOOMA beyond her. You’ll have to scroll down to find the RIGS AND SAILS Page, there’s a heap of informative Pages on the website these days! And if you want to find out the story behind the evolution of the rigs pictured, it’s all in the book THE OPEN BOAT-THE ORIGIN, EVOLUTION AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE AUSTRALIAN 18-FOOTER , available from the BOOKS Page on the website.
