19.01.2022 A COVID-19 message from Hatzolah to the community

17.01.2022 Dear Hatzalah Members, I used to stand in awe. I have stood in awe before, when I realized the lives that you live. The fact that you never have down time, tha...t you are on call 24-7. When I realized that when a call comes in, it may be the first time you have been able to sit for 5 minutes that day, and yet you go. I stood in awe when I realized that there are so many calls that come in and some of them turn out just to be scares, yet you still show up. But then there was that time when the call wasn't getting picked up because it was Erev Shabbos and it didn’t sound so urgent but one of your members sent a priority message on the radio and made sure someone showed up to a friends apartment minutes to Shabbos to save their choking baby. I was further in awe when I realized your duties go beyond saving lives, that you are also there to be a friend in a frightening new world for a new patient, when you showed up to Maimonides to escort my friend straight to NYU when her son's MRI results sent him straight into brain surgery. I have stood in awe then again, when I realized that you sometimes get calls to come to a critical scene and then despite all your efforts, it's all to no avail, when you are forced to utter the hard, hard words of Baruch Dayan HaEmes. Where despite all you have done and the emotions that you are feeling, you lift your faces to see the wife and children of a patient that you couldn't save, and their faces remain etched in your psych forever, like the time that you were called to my uncles house on that fateful day. I continued to stand in awe when I realized that sometimes you don't just show up once. You show up again and again and again, when there is someone who is fighting an illness, and having a caring medic come to their house over and over again is the difference between hospitalization or staying home, like you are doing now as my aunt battles cancer. And then there was Covid. Suddenly, Hatzalah was plunged into a war zone. While we all retreated to our houses to be safe, Hatzalah went out to meet the plague head on. They went from call to call non-stop. They were on emergency mode for weeks on end, their pledge to be there for the community suddenly took on a whole new meaning as their dedication was stretched to the limits. Yet their limits new no bounds as they simply didn't stop. It was a risk to their lives, it was hard, and it was something that they didn't sign up for, but that didn't stop them. They showed us a whole new level of dedication, of altruism, of what it means to have self-sacrifice, not just metaphorically but physically. For many of these members, they knew that their physical lives could be in danger from this. Now I no longer stand only in awe, that word is too simple to describe how one feels when they realize the debt of gratitude our communities, our families, owe to Hatzalah. I am humbled, I am inspired, I am indebted and yes, I am also in awe. In awe of the fact that a human can be greater than an angel.
