25.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday - Meet our Volunteers! Find out about Andy Munns and why he's part of the Fleet Family. 1. How long have you been volunteering for the fleet?... I joined the Lady Hopetoun and Port Jackson Marine Steam Museum back in 1972. 2. What made you start volunteering? I was always a steam nut and built model engines as a kid. I was hesitant about volunteering until Board member Stuart Gibson rang me and guided me through the joining in process. Then also Michael Muter, who invited me on a pre-dawn trip on Wattle to take on bunker oil at Gore Cove - First time down below on a working steamer and the onset of my lifelong enthusiasm for steam. John Oxley was also operational and going to sea and I did one unforgettable trip on her. 3. Where do you work within the fleet? My first work was cleaning black sludge from Lady Hopetouns bilges - Then trained as fireman and ably taught by Bill Livingston - The fireman test back then was firing to Killarney Heights and back with no assistance or problems. Together Mori Flapan and I discovered the neglected and laid up Waratah and worked together to tidy her up and raise steam. Support for the restoration grew, culminating in the hull and deck repair at our mini dry dock at Bank Street. This heavy duty restoration mindset continued through restorations of James Craig, Lady Hopetoun, our smaller vessels and now John Oxley. Aside from restorations, was fireman and greaser and also engineer on Lady and Waratah, and also fired and greased in Forcefuls much larger plant. For a while completed an earlier restoration of Kookaburra with the old Chrysler straight 8 engine installed. John Oxley - After my trip on our big steamship back in 1972 I kept with the vessel and today look after the committee. I am very proud of our teams progress so far and look forward to when our old steamer returns to active Fleet life. 4. Whats something we may not know about you or an interesting fact about yourself? Like Martyn, I also had a childhood in choirs and still remember the old hymns that were sung at my church all those years ago. I also appeared once in a school musical, where I became a Pirates of Penzance policeman. All fell away when my voice broke, but I retain a musical wince when I hear pitch and timing fails. 23.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday Meet Hans Adzersen, Executive Mate on James Craig. 1. How long have you been volunteering for the Fleet? I first started in April 2012. ... 2. What made you start volunteering? Sometime in 2002 I met Jeremy Colville, Master of James Craig, at a shipping / transport function. Drinks in hand we started talking ships and seafaring. Jeremy asked about my background in the shipping industry. When mentioning my time as a cadet decades ago on the training ship DANMARK and subsequent seafaring career in the Danish and Swedish merchant marines Jeremy got interested and invited me to join the James Craig. Unfortunately at the time I was still working (long hours) and had a young family and didnt seem to have the time and energy for an engagement as a volunteer with a three-masted barque. However, ten years later, now retired and returned to Sydney I past James Craig one morning and saw a number of elderly people climb her masts doing maintenance. This re-kindled my interest. I called Jeremy asking if the offer to join was still open. I went along on the day sail next Saturday and the rest is history. 3. Where do you work within the Fleet? I joined as deck crew and maintenance volunteer. I enjoyed that immensely and didnt really plan to do anything else. After all my Master One ticket had lapsed in the year 2000 as a result of non-usage. But encouragement from the three current Masters made me reconsider my next move. After years of study at my tender age studying is hard work I eventually got through GPH and Master 4, the required sea time as deck officer and Square Rig Endorsement and from March 2017 I have sailed the James Craig and occasionally the Fleet tugs - as Master. My involvement in this unique maritime heritage vessel and the SHF organisation has brought invaluable satisfaction to my life in retirement. In fact I like it so much that it contributed to putting on hold last years planned relocation to Denmark. For a while my wife Birgitta was not happy. 4. What is an interesting fact about yourself? I have three children and nine grandchildren that live in Europe, which is one of the reasons we were planning to relocate to Denmark.

22.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday - Find out about Brett Smith and why hes part of the Fleet family! 1. How long have you been volunteering for the Fleet? I joined Sydney Maritime Museum back in 1988, at 12 years of age. My Grandpa had taken me to Birkenhead Point, climbing all over the John Oxley, Lady Hopetoun and all through the fantastic shore based display we had there.... 2. What made you start volunteering? My Pa used to take me down to Manly Wharf every morning when I was young and we would watch the ferries. It was here that the seed was planted and my love of all things maritime heritage, and particularly ferries began. When Kanangra was handed to the SMM and arrived at Sydney Seaport in Cockle Bay, I started volunteering. I would look forward to my Saturday aboard Kanangra or Protex, Waratah, or the old Whaler. The great thing about SHF however is that as one generation sails past, another seems to always take its place. One advantage of starting off so young at SHF is that I have been lucky to get to know 3 generations of volunteers. It is the volunteers and their passion to contribute towards preserving our vessels that is the reason I continue with the Fleet. 3. Where do you work within the Fleet? Currently I am Chairman of the Kanangra Restoration Committee. This group are working hard to make sure the last example of Sydneys famous K class ferries is saved for future generations. I am a member of the John Oxley Restoration Committee, advising on the operational set up. My other passions are with increasing the Fleets profile to the greater audience, helping to manage our Facebook pages and organising projects such as Protexs recent visits to the Davistown Regatta. I am also qualified as Master on Waratah, Lady Hopetoun, Harman, Berrima, Protex and the Tugs. 4. Whats something we may not know about you? In 2000 I had the honour of skippering Lady Hopetoun out of Sydney Harbour and up to Pittwater and Wisemans Ferry. As far as we know, this was the first time our flagship had left the Harbour since WW2. After we berthed at Wisemans Ferry, closer inspection revealed she was sitting below the waterline. Why? We were now in partially fresh water all the way up the Hawkesbury River!1.

17.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday Meet our Volunteers. Find out about Nick Brown and why hes part of the Fleet Family! 1. How long have you been volunteering for the fleet... I joined the ship in Hobart as a passenger in 2011 and learned to climb the rig on the way back to Sydney. It was a terrific experience and a great introduction to the ship and I made many friends on the way. 2. What made you start volunteering/ why do you volunteer I started volunteering a couple of years after retiring from the National Measurement Institute (CSIRO). I had finished the house repairs and needed a new interest. I have always sailed a dinghy but never gone to sea. It was a great decision. 3. Where do you volunteer within the Feet? I think I have tried my hand at everything on JC, until an inherited heart problem has clipped my wings for the last year or so. The most enjoyable activity has been the Helmsman project sails where we took groups of teenagers to sea. Working on maintenance projects such as caulking and sail making is very rewarding. But coordinating the guides and developing picture books, notices stands and generally trying to stand up for them has been my main task for the last nine to ten years. 4. Whats something we may not know about you or an interesting fact? I think it was about 1978 that I bought a Heron and started sailing with my wife at the Concord and Ryde Sailing Club. This was converted to a Tasar in 1984 and I am still sailing it. I ran their sail training class for 10 years so they made me a life member. Now I am the class captain for Tasars and NS14s. If you want to try sailing a dinghy just let me know - we have a very active group teaching dinghy sailing!

17.01.2022 Very excited to receive the Awesome Foundation's May grant of $1000 and with it the support of their trustees who each contribute personally to the award. Invites for the Heritage Shipyard Volunteer restart party will be dispatched when we have a firm restart date. Thank you for the grant Awesome Foundation Sydney we are looking forward to meeting you.

17.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday - Meet our Volunteers! Find out about Tomoko Suga and why she's part of the Fleet Family. 1. How long have you been volunteering for the fleet?... Joined in 2018, started sailing with James Craig in 2019. Whale watching season is fun. I enjoyed shipkeeping duties and meeting more interesting sailors during the Melbourne Trip. 2. What made you start volunteering/ why do you volunteer? I like the input for a non-profit organisation and the outcome. James Craig has a lovely culture. I started volunteer work for developing countries during my youth as a learning curve for my study at USYD and had a good time. I eventually became the United Nations officer for Japan concerned about health, welfare and education for the people. Volunteer arm is often supported by skilled workers but at the same time a great learning experience for others. I am overwhelmed by the development for an individual being one of the crew members. 3. Where do you volunteer within the fleet? I am a deckhand, trying to keep up with all the activities. At such a large scale, I am fascinated by how the square rigs work and operations of all crew members to make it a great sailing day. There are plenty of activities to keep people interested and always still more to learn and be involved in. 4. Whats something we may not know about you or an interesting fact? Sydney Flying Squadron is where I started learning to sail and took interest in the sporting challenges. I have a genuine interest in the history and culture of Australia. My job now is working for NSW Government Fleet. Our workload is non-stop ordering and delivering vehicles to all agencies with demand for patient transporters due to the current situation. It has been incredible being involved in another fleet business on the weekends.

16.01.2022 Tonight is the night! Make sure you're watching ABCME at 630pm to see our crew challenge sailors Caitlin and Stella to sailing our Tall Ship James Craig!

15.01.2022 39 years ago today our 1902 Steam Tug, Waratah, successfully carried out steaming trials after a long period of restoration. She is the oldest tug in working order in Australia. Steam whistles carry a very specific sound on the harbour, you may even recognise them in the Assassin's Creed video game from a few years ago. Watch how they recorded the sounds on our Steam vessels in the below video!

15.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday Find out about Joan Carter and why shes part of the Fleet Family! 1. How long have you been volunteering for the Fleet? I started volunteering with the Fleet in 2009 upon our return to Sydney from Queensland. ... 2. What made you start volunteering? My husband Robin, a shipwright and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer was interested in the Fleet so I came along for the ride. I started volunteering at Rozelle in the office with Tim Drinkwater but after about three months it was suggested I would be more useful in the office at Wharf 7. And so, I became a regular twice weekly volunteer in the office. The office was quite different then, the phone rang constantly with people booking trips and outings, all of this before online bookings and online payments. 3. Where do you volunteer within the Fleet? In the time I have been volunteering I think I have done every job in the office drawing on my many years of administrative experience. It was exciting to be involved with the introduction of Salesforce, computer programme, which changed the way the office operated. I am often asked why I volunteer. Volunteering keeps me up to date, informed and provides an important social outlet whilst contributing to the success of the Fleet. Currently my job at the Fleet is compiling the weekly Fleet Forum, which I now do from home (due to the virus situation) but I miss the social interaction with the people at Wharf 7. 4. What something we may not know about you? Something you may not know about me is that I have cracked through the glass ceiling a number of times. I was the first female professional in the Accounts office of a large Japanese firm in Sydney. I was the first female Bursar (Development Officer) in an Independent Girls School in Sydney and I completed my Bachelor of Adult Education in 2013. I was a Board Member of the Fleet for four years. I enjoy volunteering with Sydney Heritage Fleet and hope to continue to contribute to its survival for many years to come.

14.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday Find out about Tim Wilson and why hes part of the Fleet Family! 1. How long have you been volunteering for the Fleet? For eight years.... 2. What made you start volunteering? I commenced volunteering for a number of organisations after retiring from corporate life a little over 10 years ago. First I was invited to be a jump judge at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, and I found that most rewarding. Later I took up the call for ANMM volunteer guides because of my lifetime association with all things maritime. While guiding there, I strolled through the Wharf 7 exhibits, observed the James Craig alongside and decided to join the fleet. Volunteering is an opportunity to put something back into the community in any area where you may have some skill to offer. It also widens your skills, circle of friends and exposes you to different opinions which makes you less prone a fixed point of view. For me, It was also a time in my life, perhaps first since childhood, when I felt I could focus on doing things that I really wanted to do. 3. Where do you work within the Fleet? I guide on the James Craig and the Harman, but my primary focus is being the Harman guides Team Leader. When I started with the Harman we ran one cruise (Fish and Ships). In the past five years we have designed and introduced four more cruises which cover the north and south shores of Sydney Harbour both east and west of the bridge, and a return trip on the Parramatta River to Newington Wharf. Harman guides give commentary on all our cruises from a well-researched body of documentation. We offer all five cruises to groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and as individually ticketed cruises on some Saturdays. Pre-Covid , the Harman proved itself to be a useful little income earner for the fleet, regularly undertaking the 8 cruises maximum a month, for around 20 passengers a cruise. 4. Whats something we may not know about you? I have owned many boats since learning to sail at the Avalon Sailing club in small dinghies aged 8. Later, I sailed various larger keelboats in state and national championships including an Olympic class Dragon skippered by Harold Halvorsen.

14.01.2022 Leaping into the weekend with the energy of the Tall Ship James Craig sleepover kids!

13.01.2022 Today is Take Your Dog to Work day! Did you know that taking your dog to work isn't a new idea, though? Seafarers like the crew on Tall Ship James Craig have taken their best friends to sea with them throughout history for companionship on long and sometimes dangerous voyages. Photo: Tall Ship James Craig Crew, c.1907.

13.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday - Meet David Logie and find out why he's part of the Fleet Family! 1. How long have you been volunteering for the fleet? I joined the Sydney Maritime Museum in July 1991. My membership stands at 29 years.... 2. What made you start volunteering? I sailed on Our Svanen during the 1988 Bicentennial Voyages and again when the vessel was owned by the NSW Sail Training Association. I then joined SHF as a volunteer to work on the James Craigs restoration and to sail on-board her when she was commissioned. My long-term plan was to train as a Ships Engineer and crew on James Craig. Before I could start volunteering, Barry Jones discovered that I was a Licenced Electrical Contractor and advised of some serious electrical safety issues at Rozelle that required a qualified Electrician. I went to Rozelle to fix up the problems before joining the James Craig Team. Twenty-nine years later the electrical work is still preventing me from joining James Craig. I have realised that for the long-term safety of Museum volunteers & staff, it is important to have a competent & professional team of electricians available for work within the Museum. The current Electrical Team is a real asset for the Museum. 3. Where do you work within the Fleet? I am a member of the SHF Electrical Team. The Electrical Team works in every area of the museums activities, including all the vessels and all the work sites. I work on the vessels to restore them and to maintain the operational vessels to ensure their continuing operational serviceability. Over the last 29 years I have served on many committees, working groups & study groups. They include: a. John Oxley Restoration Committee 2003 to 2016 b. Volunteers Committee 1996 to 2002 c. Safety Committee 2003 to 2018 (Chair from 2012 to 2018) d. Kanangra Restoration Committee 1998 present ( Chair from 2006 to 2018) e. Rozelle Bay Works Committee 2010 to 2018 (Chair from 2013 to 2018) f. Sydney Maritime Museum Board of Directors 2013 to 2018 (Vice President) 4. Whats something we may not know about you? I Worked 44 years with one employer (Electricity Commission of NSW), retired in 2005, last position was a Network Controller.

13.01.2022 Sydney Heritage Fleet's, 1902 Steam Tug "Waratah", returned to the harbour today after a long absence and a boiler makeover. We picked the most beautiful day! We are now COVID safe and conducted safety training on board along with our "trial" passengers who were volunteers from Rozelle. Well done to all the team for a successful day out and those in the trenches who contributed to all the maintenance in the meantime. Come and join us for a cruise or as a volunteer. www.shf.org.au

12.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday find out about Ray Jenkinson and why hes part of the Fleet Family! 1.How long have you been volunteering for the Fleet? I became involved in 2006 and spoke to the late John Teffer who told me to see the men on Kanangra and met Col Tooher. I never left.... 2. What made you start volunteering? A love of boats. Salt water runs in my veins. Dad was a third generation maritime worker and was even a Cape Horner when he ran away to sea at 14 years old .His father had a boating business in Waterview Bay, now Morts Bay and his father was in the Royal Navy in Kent, England. (My dad was also master of Protex for Nicholson's and Lady Hopetoun on occasions for M.S.B.) He also drove for Mort's Dock until they closed. 3. Where do you volunteer within the Fleet? Started on Kanangra for 4 years and left her to be Ships Husband on Protex for 5 years and Executive Master on Berrima for 5 years and also crew on all of our vessels at Rozelle. 4. Whats something we may not know about you? During my 3rd year at Rozelle Junior Technical School I thought I would like to be a water policeman but had to be 5 foot 10 and only grew to 5 foot 5 so I became a butcher. In hindsight I should have gone on the ferries. S.H.F has been so good to me, making up for lost time.

11.01.2022 50 years ago the Queensland Government put John Oxley up for disposal and she was donated to Sydney Heritage Fleet formally known as Lady Hopetoun and Port Jackson Marine Steam Museum. She was officially handed over by Mr Chalk, the Deputy Premier of Queensland on August 13, 1970. Our museum crew went to Brisbane to prepare John Oxley for the delivery voyage and steamed her down the coast to her new home in Sydney arriving on August 17, 1970. The restoration commenced in 200...2 and is still ongoing, for more information visit http://johnoxley.org.au/ or for updates on the progress follow John Oxley - Australia's last Coastal Steamship First photo supplied by John Bennett of John Oxley arriving in Sydney Harbour. Second photo supplied by Tom Binns, includes SHF Founder, Warwick Turner and original Chief Enginer on John Oxley, Aub Binnie on the delivery voyage.

10.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday - Meet our Volunteers! Find out about Sally Ostlund and why she's part of the Fleet Family. 1. How long have you been volunteering for the fleet?... I first toured James Craig in 2001. On that day many volunteers were doing maintenance tasks on board and upon learning that I had crewed on tall ships in the USA I was invited to climb aloft. I was also invited to come back and volunteer, which is exactly what I did several months later. 2. What made you start volunteering? I was allowed to live aboard the James Craig during my five months in Sydney and did a variety of volunteer work; guiding visitors to the ship, vacuuming dust off the ballast blocks below the tween decks, and crewing the ship during our first long voyage to Eden. I returned to Sydney from the USA the following two years, becoming a paid staff member for a short period of time working on educational overnight programs. 3.Where do you volunteer within the fleet? I was a regular in the office and on the Harman Tours, and guided many groups around the shipyard in Rozelle. As I had taken the GPH course through TAFE, I often worked aboard Harman, also sanding and painting to help with her maintenance. I tried my hand at firing the lady Hopetouns boiler and even crawled into her bilge to do some sanding! I varnished timber and polished brass on the lovely Boomerang, and crewed on her as well. Eventually I concentrated my volunteering on the James Craig and now lead living history activities with passengers which we call History in Action including: keeping ships time by ringing the bell, knot work and pulling on lines while singing a shanty. They are intended to give the passengers a more hands on experience in the sailing of the ship. Occasionally James Craig carries a visitor from 1902. This is Bertha Sawyer AKA Birdie, who is emigrating from Maine to NSW Australia. Birdie spent much of her life with her father aboard his cargo ships. I started the research for the character in 2003. 4. What is an interesting fact about yourself? I love Music. Once a month I host The James Craig Music Club on the ship where I invite a variety of performers. It meets on a Thursday in the evening and grew out of a shanty group.

08.01.2022 Fleet Family FridayMeet Michael Schultz and find out why hes part of the Fleet Family! 1. How long have you been volunteering for the Fleet? 30 years to date, joining in 1990.... 2. What made you start volunteering and why do you volunteer? A life of recreation associated with boats, followed by employment associated with commercial shipping. I learnt about the Fleet whilst reading the Afloat magazine, that one could buy a ticket for a trip on a real steam vessel. In those days I booked with a former staff member Moira Dalton who also operated the Fundraiser Lottery with a Porsche as a prize. Moira kindly talked me into more activities and I chartered many vessels with the favourite being our steam launch Lady Hopetoun including a New Years Eve Cruise. I started volunteering as I recognised the absolutely fabulous things both volunteers and staff were able to achieve in re-creating parts of a ship made many years ago and in operating vessels of yesteryear. After 30 years I am still admiring these achievements which in turn help maintain Australias Maritime History. 3. Where do you work within the Fleet? Being both a handyman practical type and an administrator, I have served most of my time at our Rozelle Workshops and serving on Boards and Committees helping with my knowledge and experiences. My history is as follows: 2008 Nominated Hon. Life Member. 2008 Invited to the Board of Governors. 2011-2019 8 years as the Governors appointee on the Board of Directors. 2012-2019 7 years, appointed by Board of Directors as their representative for the Fleets Restoration project PV John Oxley. Committees: I enjoyed substantial time volunteering on the following committees; Finance, John Oxley, Volunteer Services, Fundraising & Advisory. In October last year I decided that for health reasons I needed to slow up a bit and also in a few months I will join the OBEs (Over Bloody Eightys). I therefore retired from the Board of Directors and all committees except the Advisory committee and remain a fleet Governor. 4. Whats something we may not know about you or an interesting fact about yourself? I loved as a young boy attending 1st Clifton Gardens Sea Scouts which taught me the love of Bushwalking and of course sailing in all types of small boats and knots & lashings. Formerly 22 years in the Army Reserve (CMF) as a sailor teaching Navigation & Seamanship, serving in The Royal Australian Engineers (Tn) at 32 Small Ship Squadron. I am still sailing as crew of a yacht out of Greenwich Flying Squadron.

07.01.2022 UPDATE: Given the unfortunate developing situation in both Victoria and NSW, like many business we have had to take a step back to ensure the safety of our crew and passengers. We feel it would be irresponsible as a community organisation to allow large groups of individuals from different areas of NSW to gather and risk the unintended transfer of the coronavirus to their own communities. James Craig is back in business!... We are excited to welcome back our members and guests for our upcoming cruises and sails. Our first event will be a Harbour Cruise, past Sydney icons held on the 23rd August. https://shf.rezdy.com/402721/a-taste-of-the-harbour We will be back to sailing from September onward - to check out the available dates visit our website. https://shf.rezdy.com/15/see-sydney-under-sail-a-day-at-sea * We're taking extra precautions to make these cruises COVID safe for all our passengers and crew. 06.01.2022 Fleet Family Friday - Meet our Volunteers! Find out about Jan Larsen and why she's part of the Fleet Family! 1. How long have you been volunteering for the Fleet?... I have been a volunteer since 2009, thanks to meeting David Van Kool. He heard that I had worked as a guide for Sydney Harbour National Parks for 7 years and suggested I contact Jackie Clarke. My husband Dines was interested too and we went on a Fleet Discovery Day and joined together. 2. What made you start volunteering/ why do you volunteer? We had both unofficially retired and, with Far Flung Family (New York and Darwin and Dines family in Denmark), wanted flexibility to travel to see them as well as a challenge to do something new. We had built a 19 ft. fibreglass runabout when the kids were young and loved boating on the Hawkesbury, the Myall Lakes and even took Viking I it to Noosa one year. (Sadly there was never a Viking II). Since joining, I love the diversity of backgrounds of the people I meet through the Fleet as well as the locals and visitors I take on a tour or cruise. 3. Where do you work within the Fleet? I am a Thursday guide on the James Craig and also guide on the Harman. Thanks to Bruce Shying I started with Fish & Ships cruises way back in about 2010 so pleasurable to meet the passengers and team up with the crew. I also do Behind the Scenes Wharf 7 tours and have got to know some of the ANMM volunteers and staff. 4. Whats something we may not know about you or an interesting fact about yourself? As a child in Perth I often went sailing on the Swan River with Uncle Ted in Argosy.
