18.01.2022 Fred Luxford 1922-2020 In sad news for our community, Frederick Luxford, best known as Fred, from the Class of 1939, has passed away on Friday 3rd July 2020, aged 97. Fred was born and raised in Bondi, and attended Sydney High School from 1935 to 1939. As many Old Boys know, Fred's affection for Sydney High and all it stood for was legendary and ongoing until the day he passed.... He played rugby and cricket and was a member of the front row in the 3rd XV, alongside the late Justice Lionel Murphy. He always recalled with fond memories the summer camps at Sussex Inlet, which for city boys, barely out of the Depression, were a welcome and frontier-like holiday. He recounted often to his boys that on his first day at school, he was accompanied and "buddied" by a big High boy from down the road in Bondi, one Alan Callaway, the famous rower and coach. Bill Bowey was also a contemporary and friend of Fred. When his first of 3 sons ( Derek 1968 Captain, Ian 1970 Prefect, Richard 1976 Vice Captain) started at High, in the 60's, our weekends were centred around support for High both on the sideline, river bank and in working bees. Richard recalls his Dad swinging a sledgehammer at Abbotsford as the fathers remodelled the retaining walls and driveways. Then, it was still partly a working boat yard with slipways and cranes from Greens Boats, and a swimming pool enclosure Fred took all or at least one of his boys to every Head of the River from the middle 60's, and dressed their car in chocolate and blue streamers and cheered from the bank. If Fred ever felt the rugby pre game warm-up was less than vigorous, he would quite simply take over from the coach (sometimes a teacher) and exhort the boys to ensure they were match ready. His side line support, which consisted of 13 years with sons playing rugby at High, followed by 5 years SHOBs rugby, was a feature of Saturday afternoons and his constructively critical calls and "Tiger High", " bustle, bustle. bustle" and "drive it High," were enough to clear the sidelines and river banks of any of the private school boys and let no one in any doubt as to his allegiance. The GPS Rugby threepeat victories of 1971-1973 were sweeter to no one more than Fred, as was the glorious Yaralla Cup of 1976. Fred will be farewelled at a Memorial Service on Tuesday 14th July at 10am at St Matthews Church, West Pymble for those wishing to pay their respects.

17.01.2022 Posted @withregram @sydneyboyshighcricket Congratulations to Pranav Sampath who scored a monster, unbeaten 153 off 78 balls for the 16As. With that, the 16As chased Scots' 5/250 to be 4/253.

17.01.2022 2/2 When he told his mother of this plan, she said to him: People like us dont become doctors. In his final years of university, he met a second-year nurse (Kay Wilson, as Barbara was known at the time) whom he married after he finished his internship in late 1954.Barclay was an intern and resident at Royal Prince Alfred from 1954. He began his psychiatric training in 1957 at Parramatta Psychiatric Centre and Broughton Hall Psychiatric Clinic in 1958, becoming medical supe...rintendent of the recently established North Ryde Psychiatric Centre (now Macquarie Hospital) at the youthful age of 30 in 1960.He gained one of the prestigious Harkness Fellowships in 1964, working for two years in the Division of Community Psychiatry in the School of Public Health at Columbia University in New York. It was during that time in the US that he became impressed by the growing community psychiatry movement in that country. This experience had a major influence on his career, where he was to use his senior public roles to enhance psychiatric services outside of the then largely institutional-based practice of psychiatry. Soon after his return to Australia, he was appointed director of NSW psychiatric services in 1966. Barclay used his influence in the various senior roles to improve the lives of those with serious mental illness. In an address in 2005, he reflected on his early experience of the old psychiatric hospitals: It was a shock to me to discover the Dickensian conditions of accommodation and care of the unfortunate people who were incarcerated in the mental institutions While many date the beginnings of community psychiatric care in NSW to the Richmond Report of 1983, Barclay and others began the process of deinstitutionalisation in the 1960s and 1970s, with a dramatic reduction of patient numbers in the mental hospitals and transfer of many to homes in the community. From 1965 to 1975, the population of the mental hospitals in NSW was reduced from 12,400 to 7400 a much greater reduction than that achieved after the Richmond Report. Furthermore, Barclay placed great emphasis on psychiatric rehabilitation programs for the seriously ill. - Smh.com.au See more

10.01.2022 Posted @withregram @prefectsofsydneyhigh Congratulations to our 2020 House Shield Winners, McKay!!! Heading into Tuesday’s Year 7 House Basketball finals, McKay and Torrington were neck to neck with an equal number of shield points, with the winner of the basketball finals also deciding who would win the house shield. In a thrilling game, McKay pulled out a 21-20 victory, in turn edging out Torrington for not only House Basketball, but also the overall winners of the house ...shield. We will engrave McKay 2020 winners on the shield and hang it back up in the office foyer Congratulations to McKay, and condolences to Torrington who came just shy! All points from now on will determine the 2021 shield winners. So make sure to get participating and good luck to all the houses for 2021! We hope everyone has enjoyed participating this year in spite of the circumstances. By reintroducing the house shield we have permanently restarted the tradition which had been lost in previous years

06.01.2022 1/2- Bill Barclay was a prominent psychiatrist who was responsible for all hospitals in NSW (general and psychiatric) during the tumultuous period of the introduction of the Medibank universal health care system (now Medicare) under the Whitlam government in 1975. He was appointed to the critical role of Commissioner for Personal Health Services in 1973 in the recently formed NSW Health Commission, and was the NSW chief medical negotiator with the Commonwealth. Bill Hayden, t...hen Commonwealth Minister for Social Security, had used Barclays close university friend, Dick Scotton, to create Medibank and negotiate with the states. During negotiations, Hayden quipped to Barclay that, as a man from a working-class background now serving the NSW Liberal government, he was a turncoat, but Barclay could see the huge societal benefits in socialised healthcare.Barclay was also responsible for negotiating with senior hospital medical staff over the introduction of Medibank into the NSW system, facing strong opposition from the Australian Medical Association and honorary doctors, who threatened to withdraw from outpatient clinics and delay treatment for non-urgent conditions. The Herald of September 20, 1975, quoted Barclay: It will then be up to the medical profession to answer to the public for their actions. Medibank was finally instituted in NSW on October 1, with Barclay ensuring that hospital doctors were well remunerated for their services. NSW was the last state to sign on to the deal. William Barclay was born in 1930 in Coogee, only child of Arthur, who owned a furniture workshop, and a strict Irish mother, Sarah, who made lamp shades for local sale. He went to Bondi Beach Public school and then Woollahra opportunity class. As the Depression intensified, Arthur's business faltered, so he took to selling furniture polish and haberdashery door to door. During World War II, Sarah took Bill to Albury then Goulburn, where the schoolmaster recognised his talent, recommending him to Sydney Boys High. He matriculated to the University of Sydney with a Commonwealth scholarship, gaining entry to medicine.
