21.01.2022 Engaging a plasterer to fix your cracked plaster walls may be the most obvious choice but is it? How do you know when you should start worrying about your wall cracks? When should you start to worry about a crack in the wall?... The location, direction and extensiveness of wall cracks are a good indicator of their seriousness. There are often other tell-tale signs of a bigger problem that accompany wall cracks. Difficulties in opening and closing of doors and windows is also a good indicator of a serious structural problem. If your doors and windows are sticking or cant be opened or closed and its not because of paintwork or other more benign causes, then you may have a structural problem. Nail popping or visible nails or screws appearing on the walls are also a sign that all is not well. Cracks in places like the ceiling, where the ceiling meets the walls cracks showing in corners. An uneven and bouncy floor should ring alarm bells. If you roll a ball across the floor and it doesnt travel in a straight line your floor line may be tilting. If you feel the furniture moving while you walk in the room it maybe the inadequate support from the foundations. Before the cracks on the wall turn into something more serious. 20.01.2022 *business post* Floor levelling Cracks on walls ... Gap between floors and walls Creaking floors Sloping floors Bouncy floors This may be caused by movement of your foundations, weather and poor workmanship. We can’t fix the weather and we can’t stop the earth moving but we may be able to give you a higher quality workmanship by firstly identifying the cause of the issue and providing you with a long term solution. If your house is on a slab then best to get a structural engineer to assess before you contact us but if your house is on piers (or stumps as they are often referred to) and if the underlying issues are the internal piers then contact us to arrange a free* site inspection from a qualified builder specialising in foundation work. Licensed and insured we travel all over Sydney and beyond.

15.01.2022 Brick Piers decay and deterioration When newly plastered masonry facades show dark moist areas at a certain height or the plaster is loose from the masonry, the problem is often linked to increased salt content within the masonry. In the first case, the salts result in hygroscopic moisture and in the latter the salts are precipitating in the interface between the plaster and the masonry resulting in the plaster loosing adhesion. High salt concentrations can further result in... salt weathering of masonry where the brick and/or mortar are/is seriously damaged. Rising dampness is a source of salts in masonry. The most common places where high levels of concentrations of salts are found are in/on building brick piers under the building. The most common salts in masonry are sulphates, chlorides and nitrates. The salts can originate from the soil, for the greater Sydney areas however, this is caused by what is called urban salinity. The presence of aqueous electrolyte solutions in capillary pores of brick masonry can, under changing climate conditions, cause deterioration of wall structures due to the changes between dissolved ions in solution and nucleated salt. Ions move in brick masonry depending on the water content, and salts may then be precipitated. Different types of damage may appear due to this concentrating phenomenon including: Bricks and mortar can decompose from salt-induced decay Before the cracks on the wall turn into something more serious.
