25.01.2022 SWARM PREVENTION & CONTROL Watch the FREE Video NOW! https://youtu.be/yvQsI076MHs... Spring has Arrived and that means it's swarming season. So we have just released a new video with Bruce White on Swarm Prevention & Control. Swarming is the natural process of bees increasing in numbers. The aim of this video is to show you how to manage your colonies to control and prevent swarming. Swarming is not desirable as you risk losing up to half the colony bees, and with possible nuisance bee implications. Always be observant and only interchange disease free material and healthy bees between colonies. A Word or Two From Bruce White This video has been made possible thanks to the use of the Illawarra Amateur Beekeepers Association apiary an affiliated club of the NSW Amateur Beekeepers Association inc.

17.01.2022 FIRST HIVE INSPECTION AFTER CATCHING A SWARM A FEW DAYS EARLIER & INSTALLING A FLOW SUPER After catching a swarm just 4 days earlier, I wanted to do the first hive inspection ASAP. This was a large primary swarm collected from a mango tree about 2 meters from the ground. Much too big to fit into a standard swarm box, I took an 8 frame box. But I only had 7 frames on hand. 2 frames were stickies (frames that previously had honey in them) and 5 frames were without foundation. S...ome frames had wire and some not. I was quite pleased to see how much these bees had done in such a short time. Most frames are filled with honeycomb. Plus, they started to build comb above the top bars. A good sign that the bees needed more room to work. So I decided to add the 8th frame (a frame with plastic foundation). After the inspection you’ll see I added a queen excluder and a Flow super with 6 flow hive frames. After having a flow hive 3 years back, I wasn’t convinced it was the best solution for me. But this year I decided to try the flowhive again. This way I can compare it to the other (traditional Langstroth) hives I have sitting just a metre away. As you can see it’s a strong swarm. And although I didn’t spot the queen, there is evidence of the queen’s presence. So I’ve decided to document this hive’s progress to witness its growth. Note of the 6 flowframes, 2 are brand new, coated with some bees wax to encourage the bees to use the frames. I placed these frames on the side walls. The other 4 frames are flow frames given to me by a friend (thanks Neal). So they already have the bee smell on them.

11.01.2022 Another video just released: https://youtu.be/K9ODafXyTck How to Make Beeswax Foundation with an Embossing Roller [feat. Penny Downy illawarra beekeepers club P...resident] In this video, Penny shows how beekeepers can use their own beeswax to produce foundation. With the right tools and methods it becomes a must see for any beekeeper, especially amateur beekeepers wanting to utilise their wax cappings and beeswax blocks. It takes bees the energy equivalent of about 8 grams of honey to make just 1 gram of beeswax. So it’s no surprise, beeswax is a precious commodity. And making beeswax foundation sheets from your own beeswax is not only a smart way to conserve this precious resource, it’s also a guarantee your foundation contains only pure beeswax. At a particular age, bees produce beeswax from four pairs of special glands in their abdomens. To produce the wax, the bees must engorge themselves with honey to produce scales of beeswax. Not only is pure beeswax a food grade wax, it has been used for centuries as a lubricant, waterproofing agent, polish, leather conditioner, cosmetic, and candles. To a beekeeper, beeswax is traditionally used to produce foundation for the bees to draw out and build their honeycomb. So it plays a very much needed role in every beehive.

Swarms are generally not harmful and it’s best if they can be collected by beekeepers rather than them being exterminated https://www.beekeepers.asn.au/swarms You just go to the website punch in your postcode and up pops a list of beekeepers in your area, give someone on the list a call and the bees will find a new home in no time.
