25.01.2022 As we draw to the end of #2020, and enter the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science, we wanted to introduce you to our new CEO and Director, Professor Martina Doblin. We think you will agree, SIMS is in very good hands. UTS: University of Technology Sydney UNSW Macquarie University University of Sydney
24.01.2022 This #WorldOceansDay, learn from PhD Candidate Richard Grainger on his interesting findings about the diet of great white sharks. Rich has been examining the stomach contents of sharks here at SIMS and has been surprised to find that they might be spending more time near the ocean floor than you might have thought. https://phys.org//2020-06-great-white-shark-diet-scientist

22.01.2022 Tonight on ABC TV + iview, AUSTRALIAS OCEAN ODYSSEY takes us on a stunning journey along the East Australian Current, revealing how ocean currents create life on our planet, and what we can all do to protect our planets blue heart. This episode features the great work of our very own Operation Crayweed - so if you have caught the episode and have a question or want to know more about the project, now is your chance to ask a scientist from the team directly. Simply post your question in a comment below and someone from the team will be sure to answer all your crayweed queries! #OceanOdysseyAu #ABCTV

20.01.2022 Today we are excited to announce our new CEO and Director as our inaugural Director Professor Peter Steinberg steps down after 11 years with us. Under his leadership, we have grown from a single lab and aquarium to one of Australias nationally significant marine science institutes. From the entire team of staff, researchers, and board members - thank you, Peter. We are delighted to be able to continue this positive growth with someone who has had a long standing associatio...n with SIMS, Professor Martina Doblin. Martina is excited to take on this role and to create new opportunities for SIMS which advance the sustainability of our marine environment. 19.01.2022 SIMS is proud to be located in beautiful Koree Bay on Gurugal Head. This week, and every week, we would like to acknowledge the Borogegal and Cammeraigal people of the Kuringgai tribe, the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to Elders past, present and future. #alwayswasalwayswillbe
18.01.2022 As disappointing as it is that we were not able to be a part of the Ocean Lovers Festival this year, it was the right call to be made. And although we cant all celebrate together, the Festival team have worked hard to be able to share some really amazing online resources that we encourage you to check out! The planned Litterarty competition is now a virtual show which exhibits some amazing ocean-themed artworks made entirely from recycled rubbish, all made by schoolchildren! You can view the beautiful online gallery here - https://www.oceanloversfestival.com/litterartygallery Let this beautiful artwork uplift and inspire you, and give us hope for the future!
18.01.2022 Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! This year, SIMS celebrates all the Superstars of STEM - reserving an extra special congratulations to our marine scientists. We will continue to work towards equal representation of women and men in #STEM, as we stand with UN Women that "the world needs science, and science needs women". 17.01.2022 Did you know that over 32,000 (and counting) square kilometres of the world's marine environment has been modified by human construction, such as oil rigs, bridges, and ports? Research led by SIMS' Dr Ana Bugnot is the first of its kind to quantify the extent of human impact by creating a map of human development in the world’s oceans. Todays story is about our iconic S...ydney Harbour - a beautiful location, but beneath the surface, its a different story! 70% of all debris sinks to the ocean floor and 2/3 of pollution into Sydney Harbour comes from stormwater run-off. 16.01.2022 Did you know that fish have tiny things living on them that can tell us about the way they evolved? There is even a theory called phylosymbiosis which tells us that these tiny living things, called microbes, grow and evolve just as their hosts do. But is that true for all fish? Find out in a recently published study by one of our incredible Post Docs, Dr. Michael Doane. Read the full paper here - https://microbiomejournal.biomedcentral.com//s40168-020-00
16.01.2022 Sydney Seahorses are not the travelling type. They like to find a happy place, fall in love and give birth. So, when their habitat is lost, they’re lost too. 15.01.2022 Our campaign to bring back the Sydney Rock Oyster to Sydney Harbour just took a big step forward with the installation of these tiles on the seawall at Thornton... Park in East Balmain. Council has been working in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and the The Harding Miller Education Foundation on the Living Seawalls Project. Oysters are natural filter feeders they feed by pumping water through their gills, trapping particles of food as well as nutrients, sediments and chemical contaminants. In fact, one oyster can filter around 190 litres of water in a single day. Unfortunately since European settlement, oyster reefs, which covered the coastline, have been largely destroyed. By the 1860s most of the oyster reefs in New South Wales were decimated and today less than 1% of the original population remains. This Project has developed tiles that can be attached to seawalls to create space and habitat for oysters and other plants and animals. The seawall tiles are installed to sit 10cm off the wall meaning that any existing marine life is protected, and both sides of the tiles can be colonised by oysters and other aquatic life.

13.01.2022 What do jellyfish and green algae have in common? Theyre both forms of plankton! The word plankton comes from the Greek word planktos, meaning "wanderer", and comprises a large and diverse group of biota defined by their inability to swim actively against a current. 03.01.2022 Living Seawalls bring new life to Rushcutters Bay! Seaweed and animal species long missing from manmade shorelines are set to return thanks to a new Living Seawall we installed last week, with support from City of Sydney. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said that the City was proud to support the program, and commented that "Innovative projects like this will become even more important as we deal with the impacts of climate change and sea level rise. As coastal areas face inundation ...and flooding, we will undoubtedly see an increase in seawalls being constructed. This living seawalls program shows we can find solutions to protect and enhance biodiversity in areas undergoing rapid change.
