08.05.2022 National Volunteer Week | Where would we be without our volunteers? They are part of the glue that holds our Hospital together and today, during National Volunteer Week, we say thank you. Across our Hospital, there are more than 90 volunteers who generously dedicate their time, love and care to our patients and families. Whether this is by spending time with a sick child, providing art and craft, games to a waiting family or assisting our wards with daily tasks, it all makes an enormous difference and truly represents how we are better together. These are just some of the incredible faces who make the Hospital a better place. Please join us today as we celebrate each and every one of our volunteers and if you have a special memory, share it below

25.04.2022 #Champions4Children | When I became the Director of the Behavioural Sciences Unit at the Kids Cancer Centre in 2008, it was just me. Now we have 35 staff. It’s growing and growing which has made me very busy, but also very happy because what we do really makes a difference. Thinking about the treatment a child receives and how that affects their quality of life is critical. As a medical psychologist, most of my research at the Network and beyond has been looking at improv...ing the health and wellbeing of families living with a serious illness. In addition to this research, my role at the Behavioural Sciences Unit also involves mentoring and doing a lot more advocacy for change. Whenever you ask a family if they think the work we do is important, they always say yes. About a third of kids with serious illness have a mental health problem as well, so if you don’t treat that then two thirds of those children will go onto having long-term mental health issues. There's a lot of people who can really benefit if we prioritise their mental health at the same time as their medical treatment. I think that’s why I like it, it’s an interesting field where you can make a real difference. No one chooses for their child to be unwell, but they find themselves there and there’s diverse ways to get through that. It’s about teasing out individual differences between people and how they cope, but also then what those commonalities are and how that can help other people. - Prof Claire Wakefield, Director of the Behavioural Sciences Unit at the Kids Cancer Centre and Professor at UNSW. 06.04.2022 Like most babies, eight-month-old Eliana loves bath time. But when faced with three months of being in a hip spica cast, her family feared washing her would be a challenge. That was before they found out about the waterproof hip spica cast. The waterproof hip spica cast is an innovation from the Orthopaedic Physiotherapy team at our Hospital. Unlike traditional casts made from cotton liners, it’s designed specially to allow infants like Eliana to be washed and reduce the nee...d for a full cast change. 07.01.2022 This year, we’re not too sure if Santa will be visiting our beautiful Eliana at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick or at home. It all depends on the results of her bone marrow sample. Our bubbly and sweet six-and-a-half year-old has wandered down the festive halls of the hospital since she first learnt how to walk. She was born with a rare genetic condition that means her body's cells can't repair themselves causing sensitivity to any type of radiation and an increased ris...k of tumours and cancerous growths. Eliana’s condition is so rare that there are only two known cases in Australia and about 30 around the world. One day she will need a bone marrow transplant. But for now, we’re taking every day as it comes. Wherever we are on Christmas Day, we know Eliana will be surrounded by love and the best possible care. Maria-Rosa, Eliana’s proud mum Find out how you can help sick kids like Eliana with our Light Up Xmas Appeal: www.lightupxmas.org.au #LightUpXmas #ForSickKids

05.01.2022 Last Christmas kicked off with a visit to hospital on Christmas Eve to receive chemotherapy. Our biggest Christmas wish for this year is for Jett to remain healthy... January 11, 2018 will be forever etched in our memories, as that is the day we found out that our four-year-old boy Jett had a brain tumour. Almost two years later and Jett has spent 108 nights in Hospital, had five major brain surgeries and undergone 55 weeks of tough chemotherapy.... Jett’s tumour is located in a central part of his brain - meaning that only 80% could be removed. As a result of the tumour, Jett developed weakness down his left side and complete third nerve palsy in his right eye. Jett will always live with his brain tumour and he will continue to need regular physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, speech and occupational therapy to help him overcome the deficits caused by it. He is so brave and he’s our little fighter. Despite all his challenges he has never lost his smile. Crystal, Jett’s proud mum Wherever you're spending Christmas this year, we wish you a happy and safe one

05.01.2022 Late last year, our whole family received the best Christmas present ever a liver transplant for our little girl, Matilda. For six long years, Tilly experienced the painful symptoms of chronic liver disease. Before her transplant, she always felt extremely tired, itchy and had terrible jaundice in her eyes and skins. Now, she’s happy, strong and dreams of being a fashion designer. ... The staff at The Children's Hospital at Westmead made a difficult time for our family a whole lot easier. They have given our daughter back her life, and her sibling’s a healthy and happy sister. Tilly’s illness has been a long journey for our entire family. That’s why, this Christmas, we’ll happily spend the festive season at home together and not in hospital. Kimberley, Matilda’s mum. Merry Christmas Matilda, we hope you enjoy opening all your pressies at home this year

Earlier this month, Nathan and his mum were reunited with the doctor who helped save his life all those years ago - Dr Matthew O’Meara, NSW’s Chief Pediatrician. ... 01.01.2022 Meet Bryson and Ryder. Their beautiful smiles are extra special and a symbol of hope for others. With over 16 brain surgeries between them, both of their lives have been saved by Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick and The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Bryson was diagnosed with a brain tumour at almost three years old, needing lifesaving surgery and chemotherapy. Then his baby brother Ryder developed a life-threatening infection and needed emergency brain surgery to remo...ve an abscess that had burst. Now two years old, brave Ryder has had 16 brain surgeries, the most recent just three days ago. I owe everything to Dr Mark Dexter, Dr Erica Jacobson and all of the staff at both hospitals. Without them, my boys wouldn’t be here today. While Bryson and Ryder were in hospital, I knew whenever I needed a break, they were there caring for my children just like I would. These hospitals are like family. Tamara, Bryson and Ryder’s proud mum This year, Tamara and the boys will be spending Christmas together, the only present she could ever wish for. Tamara hopes that sharing their story will help other families this Christmas too. Find out how you can support sick kids like Bryson and Ryder with our Light Up Xmas Appeal: www.lightupxmas.org.au #LightUpXmas #ForSickKids
